(AP Photo/Orlin Wagner)</p></div> <p>Last week’s Sunflower Showdown — the nickname given to the athletic battles between Kansas and Kansas State — added a memorable chapter to the rivalry. </p> <p>In a thrilling game played at Kansas State’s Bramlage Coliseum, the Wildcats rallied from a second half deficit to upset the eighth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks.</p> <p>Despite being the 281st meeting between the two basketball programs, the story of the contest unfortunately was not about the hard-nosed basketball the two teams displayed. Instead of analysts and fans discussing Nigel Johnson’s 20 points or Nino Williams’s game-clinching jumper, what is being examined is what happened after the game: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150502022317/http://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/02/kansas-state-kansas-court-storm" target="_blank">a stampede of Kansas State fans storming on the court.</a></p> <p>Court storming — when jubilant fans of a winning team will run from their seats to celebrate with their team on the court — has received much criticism. But, while the practice has been condemned by coaches and athletic conferences, the experience is one of the most exhilarating and fun events which can occur for a college student. </p> <p>Usually only occuring following a nailbiting finish against an opponent, defeating a fierce rival by a buzzer beating three-pointer, or legendary basketball schools such as Duke or Kentucky who do their celebrating at the end of the season in national titles, court storming hypothetically should not be an issue. </p> <p>As a fan in the stands, you, seemingly in a moment teetering on the unconscious, parade your school spirit in a burst of joy with the athletes who had just bled and sweated for two hours and have a mosh pit with the players and the student body who both are screaming like loony madmen.</p> <p>This seemingly innocent practice has had far too many harmful occurrences to continue. </p> <p>The Kansas-Kansas State game was an example of several reasons of why the victorious celebration should be banned in college basketball. </p> <p>Several students interfered with the Kansas players and staff who sought to exit the floor. Head Coach Bill Self was immobilized due to the mayhem after congratulating the opposing Kansas State players and coach on the win. Kansas player Jamari Traylor looked to have been intentionally hit by a Kansas State fan who stormed the court.</p> <p><span class="embed-vine" style="display: block;"><iframe class="vine-embed" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150502022317if_/https://vine.co/v/OQPE1u9LbI1/embed/simple" width="1000" height="1000" frameborder="0"></iframe></span><script async src="//web.archive.org/web/20150502022317js_/http://platform.vine.co/static/scripts/embed.js" charset="utf-8"></script> </p> <p>While these moments theoretically should be one of the most pleasant aspects for college students at a sporting event, there have been far too many times when the joy spiraled into madness and threatened the teams and fans alike on the court. </p> <p>And that is why court storming must be banned.</p> <p>As a devoted sports fan who loves athletic competition and proudly lives and dies on the performances of my favorite teams and athletes, the idea of interacting with them in celebration would absolutely be like heaven to me. </p> <p>Unfortunately, too many fans have ruined what should be a simple, joyous experience. </p> <div class="credit">Matthew Johnson is a 21-year old junior at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
