His journey from a prince of Egypt to a shepherd in Midian, and ultimately to the leader of the Israelites, is marked by divine encounters and revelations that shaped the course of Israelite history.

The Call of Moses

The pivotal moment in Moses' life occurs in the wilderness of Midian, where he encounters God in the form of a burning bush on Mount Horeb. This theophany is recorded in Exodus 3. As Moses approaches the bush, God calls out to him, "Moses, Moses!" and instructs him to remove his sandals, for the place where he stands is holy ground (Exodus 3:4-5).

God reveals His purpose to Moses, stating, "I have surely seen the affliction of My people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sufferings. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey" (Exodus 3:7-8). This land is identified as the land of Canaan, the inheritance promised to the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Moses' Reluctance and God's Assurance

Despite the divine commission, Moses expresses reluctance and doubt about his ability to fulfill such a monumental task. He questions, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" (Exodus 3:11). God reassures Moses with the promise of His presence, saying, "I will surely be with you" (Exodus 3:12).

To further bolster Moses' confidence, God provides him with signs and wonders to perform before the Israelites and Pharaoh, including the transformation of his staff into a serpent and the miraculous healing of his leprous hand (Exodus 4:1-7). Additionally, God appoints Aaron, Moses' brother, as his spokesperson, addressing Moses' concern about his own eloquence (Exodus 4:14-16).

The Divine Name and Covenant

In this encounter, God reveals His sacred name to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14), signifying His eternal and self-existent nature. This name, Yahweh, becomes a central aspect of Israelite worship and identity. God instructs Moses to tell the Israelites that "The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you" (Exodus 3:15).

God's revelation to Moses is not only a call to action but also a reaffirmation of the covenant made with the patriarchs. The promise of deliverance and the gift of the land of Canaan are integral to this covenant, underscoring God's faithfulness to His people.

Moses' Mission Begins

Armed with divine authority and assurance, Moses returns to Egypt to confront Pharaoh and demand the release of the Israelites. This mission, fraught with challenges and opposition, ultimately leads to the Exodus, a foundational event in Israelite history. Through Moses, God demonstrates His power and sovereignty, delivering His people with a mighty hand and outstretched arm, as He had promised.

Moses' encounter with God at the burning bush marks the beginning of a transformative journey, both for him and for the nation of Israel. It is a testament to God's unwavering commitment to His covenant and His chosen people, setting the stage for the fulfillment of His promises in the land of Canaan.
Nave's Topical Index
Exodus 3:7-10
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
Nave's Topical Index

Library

Sovereignty of God in Administration
... observation of 'the laws of Nature' reveals the fact ... Mark, too, the Sovereignty which
God displayed in ... Moses again, though greatly beloved, utters one hasty ...
/.../pink/the sovereignty of god/chapter three sovereignty of god.htm
The Typical Significance of the Scriptures Declare their Divine ...
... of this world, but it also reveals God's order in ... Moses became the adopted son of
Pharaoh's daughter"so that ... he received a call and commission from God to go ...
/.../the divine inspiration of the bible/chapter six the typical significance.htm
City of God
... Chapter 18.--What the History of Sallust Reveals Regarding the ... Chapter 43.--Of the
Times of Moses and Joshua ... the Substance of the People of God, Which Through ...
//christianbookshelf.org/augustine/city of god/
The Reaction against Egypt
... and the sunshine which floods it, pitilessly reveals the mutilations ... in which he
held its local god, and intended ... the homage that he lavished on him, to cause ...
/.../chapter iithe reaction against egypt.htm
The Hebrews and the Philistines --Damascus
... See the Blessing of Moses (Dent, xxxiii ... clothed in a linen tunic and in a little
robe which his mother made for him herself, he ministered before God in the ...
/.../chapter iiithe hebrews and the.htm
Come and Welcome to Jesus Christ;
... work of saving those that the Father hath given him for that ... in all his house." Yea,
and more faithful too, for Moses was faithful in God's house but ...
/.../bunyan/the works of john bunyan volumes 1-3/come and welcome to jesus.htm
Memoir of John Bunyan
... Being engaged in his trade at Bedford, he overheard the ... of some poor pious women,
and it humbled and alarmed him. ... about a new birth, the work of God on their ...
/.../bunyan/the works of john bunyan volumes 1-3/memoir of john bunyan.htm
Resources
In what ways was Moses like Jesus? | GotQuestions.org

Why did Moses have to wear a veil? | GotQuestions.org

How old was Moses when he died?
