It suggests that the following statement is grounded in the Old Testament, specifically Genesis 2:7, where God breathes life into Adam. This phrase underscores the continuity and fulfillment of Scripture, as the New Testament often references the Old Testament to affirm its teachings.
“The first man Adam became a living being”;
Adam, as the first human created by God, is a central figure in biblical history. Genesis 2:7 describes how God formed Adam from the dust and breathed life into him, making him a "living being." This highlights the unique creation of humanity, distinct from other creatures, and emphasizes the personal and direct involvement of God in human life. Adam's role as the first man establishes him as the representative head of the human race, whose actions have theological implications for all his descendants, as seen in Romans 5:12-21.
the last Adam
The term "last Adam" refers to Jesus Christ, drawing a parallel between Adam and Christ. While Adam is the first man, Christ is seen as the culmination and fulfillment of God's plan for humanity. This typology is significant in understanding the redemptive work of Christ. Where Adam brought sin and death into the world through disobedience, Christ brings life and righteousness through His obedience and sacrifice. This concept is further explored in Romans 5:14-19, where Paul contrasts the actions and consequences of Adam and Christ.
a life-giving spirit.
This phrase highlights the transformative power of Christ's resurrection. Unlike Adam, who became a living being, Christ, as the "life-giving spirit," imparts spiritual life to believers. This life is not merely physical but eternal and spiritual, signifying the new creation that believers become in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). The life-giving aspect of Christ's work is central to the Christian hope of resurrection and eternal life, as elaborated in John 11:25-26 and 1 Corinthians 15:22. This transformation is made possible through the Holy Spirit, who applies the benefits of Christ's resurrection to believers, ensuring their participation in the new life He offers.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Adam
The first man created by God, as described in Genesis. The Rabbinical explanation of that passage was--that God breathed into man the breath of life originally, but that man became (not "was made") only a living soul, i.e., one in whom the mere human faculties held sway, and not the spirit. He became this lower thing by his own act of disobedience. Here, then, St. Paul, contrasts the two Adams--the first man and Christ--from whom we derive our natural and our spiritual natures, and our natural and spiritual bodies. The first Adam became, by his disobedience, a mere living soul, and from him we inherit that nature; the second Adam, by his obedience, became a life-giving spirit, and from Him we inherit the spiritual nature in us. The same verb which is expressed in the first clause must be understood in the second clause.
