<a href ="../mark/14.htm#3">Mark 14:3–9</a>; <a href ="../luke/7.htm#36">Luke 7:36–50</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, six days before the passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus raised from the dead. <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>They, therefore, made Him a supper there; and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining <i>at table</i> with Him. <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Mary, therefore, having taken a pound of ointment of pure spikenard, very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was about to betray Him, says, <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>"Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred denaries, and given to the poor?" <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And he said this, not because he cared about the poor; but because he was a thief; and, having the money-box, he was wont to carry what was put <i>therein</i>. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, said, <FR>"Suffer her to keep it for the day of My burial;<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><FR>for the poor ye always have with you, but Me ye have not always."<Fr><p> <A name="10"></a><p class="hdg">The Plot to Kill Lazarus<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>The great multitude, therefore, of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not because of Jesus only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But the high priests consulted, that they might slay Lazarus also; <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>because, on his account, many of the Jews were going away, and were believing on Jesus.<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">The Triumphal Entry<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/21.htm">Matthew 21:1–11</a>; <a href ="../mark/11.htm">Mark 11:1–11</a>; <a href ="../luke/19.htm#28">Luke 19:28–40</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>On the morrow a great multitude that had come to the feast, having heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>took the branches of the palm trees, and went forth to meet Him, and cried, "Hosanna! blessed is He Who is coming in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Jesus, having found a young ass, sat upon it; as it has been written, <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>"Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming upon an ass colt." <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but, when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him, and that they did these things to Him. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The multitude, therefore, that was with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, was bearing testimony. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>On this account also, the multitude met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The Pharisees, therefore, said among themselves, "Ye see that ye are effecting nothing! Behold, the world went away after Him!"<p> <A name="21"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts His Death<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And there were some Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>These, therefore, came to Philip?who was from Bethsaida of Galilee?and were asking Him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Philip comes and tells Andrew; Andrew and Philip come and tell Jesus. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And Jesus answereth them, saying, <FR>"The hour has come, that the Son of Man should be glorified.<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><FR>Verily, verily, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat, having fallen into the ground, dies, it abides alone; but, if it dies, it bears much fruit,<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>He who loves his soul loses it; and he who hates his soul in this world will keep it unto life eternal.<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>If any one serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am there will also My servant be. If anyone serve Me, him will My Father honor.<Fr><p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour. But for this cause came I to this hour.<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><FR>Father, glorify Thy Name!"<Fr> There came, therefore, a voice out of Heaven, "I both glorified it, and will glorify it again." <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>The multitude, therefore, who stood by and heard <i>it</i>, said that it had thundered; others said, "An angel has spoken to Him." <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Jesus answered and said, <FR>"This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes.<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>Now is the judgment of this world: now will the Prince of this world be cast out;<Fr> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><FR>and I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself."<Fr> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>But this He said, signifying by what manner of death He was about to die. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>The multitude, therefore, answered Him, "We have heard out of the law that the Christ abideth forever; and how sayest Thou that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is This Son of Man?" <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Jesus, therefore, said to them, <FR>"Yet a little while is the Light among you. Walk while ye have the Light, lest darkness overtake you; and he that walks in the darkness knows not where he is going.<Fr> <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span><FR>While ye have the Light, believe on the Light, that ye may become sons of Light"<Fr> These things spake Jesus, and, going away, He was hidden from them.<p> <A name="38"></a><p class="hdg">Belief and Unbelief<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But, though He had done so many signs before them, they were not believing on Him; <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which He spake, "Lord, who believed our report, and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?" <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>On this account they could not believe, because Isaiah said again, <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>"He hath blinded their eyes, and He hardened their heart, lest they should see with their eyes, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I should heal them." <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>These things Isaiah said, because he saw His glory; and he spake of Him.<p> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Yet, however, even from among the rulers, many believed on Him; but, because of the Pharisees, they did not confess <i>Him</i>, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>for they loved the glory of men, rather than the glory of God.<p> <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And Jesus cried, and said, <FR>"He who believes on Me, believes not on Me, but on Him Who sent Me;<Fr> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span><FR>and he that beholds Me, beholds Him Who sent Me.<Fr> <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span><FR>I have come a light into the world, that every one who believes on Me may not abide in the darkness.<Fr> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span><FR>And, if any one hears My words, and keeps them not, I do not judge him; for I came, not to judge the world, but to save the world.<Fr> <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span><FR>He who rejects Me, and receives not My words, has one that judges him: the word that I spake, the same shall judge him in the last day.<Fr> <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span><FR>For I spake not from Myself; but the Father, Who sent Me, Himself hath given Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.<Fr> <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/12-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span><FR>And I know that His commandment is life eternal.
