New York: Routledge) notion of 'crossing' to explore contestations in ethnolinguistic, cultural and racial affiliations at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), a university built for 'Coloureds' in apartheid South Africa, but which rebelled by admitting students of all races and ethnic backgrounds. Using interviews and observation data, we show contestations around Xhosa and Afrikaans as languages for black and coloured solidarity, respectively. We argue that the multilingual and multicultural contexts in place entail that social legitimacy is not achieved through fixed linguistics forms, bounded ethnolinguistic categories and predetermined racial characteristics but in negotiated in-group and outgroup codes all of which are part of the students' repertoire. We conclude that diversity is a function of discourses of convergence and divergence as social practice, which give the institution its unique character. On the one hand, a number of Historically White universities (HWUs) started introducing university-wide language policy initiatives and discussions, which are, however, still in their infancy. On the other hand, Historically Black universities (HBUs) seem to have almost regressed by going for English-only default policy practices, regardless of the widely reported low literacy rates among their student populations. In this paper, we present a case study of a Historically Black university with a specific focus on its nonpolicy situation to draw generalizations that apply to other HBWs in South Africa. Using the concept of "multilingual universities" and its typologies that are grounded in Bourdieu's cultural capital framework, we show disparities between what is feasible under the university's linguistic profile and the present monolingual default practices. While highlighting the literacy "costs" of missing the multilingual capital, we argue for the benefits of a trifocal language policy practice where the university can serve as a catalyst for best multiliteracy development practices. The decline of Afrikaans at Stellenbosch University over a period of roughly three decades provides an insightful context for exploring the debate on language status in higher education. This article explores the shift from Afrikaans to English – and the attendant taaldebat or language debate – at Stellenbosch University. This shift is situated within a transforming South African higher education sector and within transnational teaching and research networks. The analysis focuses on conceptual issues relating to the concept of “language” implicit in university language planning initiatives. The data consist of focus group interviews, question al naires,and studentopinionsin essays. Findingsincludea strongidentification of the participants with £ the Zulu language and Zulu culture, and a view of English variously as a language of settlers that d participants are forced to speak for instrumental reasons, or, more positively, as a language useful *-for education and as a lingua franca. Stigmatisation of those who speak English "too much" was evi-7 dent. Other findings are that although participants had been educated at nominally English-medium JQ schools, classroom instruction for many was likely to havebeen in Zulu, with English used only for written work.
