παντὸς ξύλου ἀλσώδους</span> </td> <td class="bibletd2"> <span class="verse">1</span>&nbsp;It was in the seventeenth year of Phacee, son of Romelia, that Achaz, son of Joatham, came to the throne of Juda. <span class="verse">2</span>&nbsp;He was twenty years old when he began his reign, which lasted at Jerusalem for sixteen years. This Achaz did not obey the Lord&#8217;s will like his ancestor David before him; <span class="verse">3</span>&nbsp;he followed the example of the Israelite kings, even consecrating his son by passage through the fire, after the idolatrous wont of those nations which the Lord drove out to make room for Israel. <span class="verse">4</span>&nbsp;Never a high hill or a mountain-slope or a leafy wood but Achaz must do sacrifice and offer incense there. </td> <td class="bibletd3"> <span class="verse">1</span> <span class="bible-latin">Anno decimoseptimo Phacee filii Romeli&aelig;, regnavit Achaz filius Joatham regis Juda.</span> <span class="verse">2</span> <span class="bible-latin">Viginti annorum erat Achaz cum regnare c&oelig;pisset, et sedecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem. Non fecit quod erat placitum in conspectu Domini Dei sui sicut David pater ejus,</span> <span class="verse">3</span> <span class="bible-latin">sed ambulavit in via regum Isra&euml;l: insuper et filium suum consecravit, transferens per ignem secundum idola gentium, qu&aelig; dissipavit Dominus coram filiis Isra&euml;l.</span> <span class="verse">4</span> <span class="bible-latin">Immolabat quoque victimas, et adolebat incensum in excelsis, et in collibus, et sub omni ligno frondoso.</span> </td> </tr></table> <table class="bibletable"><tr> <td class="bibletd1"> <span class="verse">5</span> <span class="bible-greek">τότε ἀνέβη Ραασσων βασιλεὺς Συρίας καὶ Φακεε υἱὸς Ρομελιου βασιλεὺς Ισραηλ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ εἰς πόλεμον καὶ ἐπολιόρκουν ἐπὶ Αχαζ καὶ οὐκ ἐδύναντο πολεμεῖν</span> <span class="verse">6</span> <span class="bible-greek">ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ ἐπέστρεψεν Ραασσων βασιλεὺς Συρίας τὴν Αιλαθ τῇ Συρίᾳ καὶ ἐξέβαλεν τοὺς Ιουδαίους ἐξ Αιλαθ καὶ Ιδουμαῖοι ἦλθον εἰς Αιλαθ καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐκεῖ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης</span> <span class="verse">7</span> <span class="bible-greek">καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Αχαζ ἀγγέλους πρὸς Θαγλαθφελλασαρ βασιλέα Ἀσσυρίων λέγων δοῦλός σου καὶ υἱός σου ἐγώ ἀνάβηθι καὶ σῶσόν με ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Συρίας καὶ ἐκ χειρὸς βασιλέως Ισραηλ τῶν ἐπανισταμένων<!--{extra=ἐπ{I-}ἀνα}--> ἐ{P'} ἐμέ</span> <span class="verse">8</span> <span class="bible-greek">καὶ ἔλαβεν Αχαζ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τὸ χρυσίον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν θησαυροῖς οἴκου κυρίου καὶ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τῷ βασιλεῖ δῶρα</span> <span class="verse">9</span> <span class="bible-greek">καὶ ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων καὶ ἀνέβη βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων εἰς Δαμασκὸν καὶ συνέλαβεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἀπῴκισεν αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν Ραασσων ἐθανάτωσεν</span> </td> <td class="bibletd2"> <span class="verse">5</span>&nbsp;And now Rasin king of Syria and Phacee son of Romelia marched on Jerusalem and besieged Achaz there, but could not get the mastery of him. <span class="verse">6</span>&nbsp;(It was then that Rasin recovered Ailam for Syria, by driving the men of Juda out from it; but the Edomites came and took possession of it, and it remains theirs to this day.[1]) <span class="verse">7</span>&nbsp;Thereupon Achaz sent a message to the Assyrian king, Theglath-Phalasar; Bring aid, master, to thy servant, father, to thy son; rescue me from the assault of Syria and Israel; <span class="verse">8</span>&nbsp;gifts, too, he sent him, collecting all the silver and gold that was to be found in temple or palace. <span class="verse">9</span>&nbsp;Nor was the king of Assyria unwilling; he marched on Damascus and laid it waste, carrying off the inhabitants to Cyrene and putting Rasin to death.[2] </td> <td class="bibletd3"> <span class="verse">5</span> <span class="bible-latin">Tunc ascendit Rasin rex Syri&aelig;, et Phacee filius Romeli&aelig; <span class="verse">11</span>&nbsp;and Urias built an altar in accordance with all the directions Achaz had sent him from Damascus, to greet his return. <span class="verse">12</span>&nbsp;Returned from Damascus, Achaz went to see it and did reverence to it;[3] then went up to make burnt-sacrifice and meal-offering; <span class="verse">13</span>&nbsp;poured libations, and shed the blood of his welcome-offerings there. <span class="verse">14</span>&nbsp;Then he removed the brazen altar, that stood ever in the Lord&#8217;s presence opposite the tabernacle, away from its place between the new altar and the temple, to the north side of the new altar. <span class="verse">15</span>&nbsp;And king Achaz bade the high priest Urias bring to this greater altar the morning burnt-sacrifice and the meal-offering at nightfall; another tradition of the Hebrew text has &#8216;And the Syrians came&#8217;, the two names being much alike in Hebrew. But it seems more likely that we ought to read &#8216;Edom&#8217; instead of &#8216;Syria&#8217; in the earlier part of the verse; it is hard to see how Syria had any claim on a port lying in the Gulf of Akabah.</p> <p>[2] &#8216;Cyrene&#8217; here is evidently some place in Assyria, &#8216;Kir&#8217; in Hebrew.</p> <p>[3] &#8216;And did reverence to it&#8217;; these words are not found in the Hebrew text, or in the Greek Septuagint.</p> <p>[4] The word here translated &#8216;porch&#8217; is of uncertain significance.
