Check out our article to find out more about the Finno-Ugric heritage of the Hungarian language!

Researchers are looking for regular phonetic correspondences between Hungarian and other Finno-Ugric languages, which can be used to reconstruct ancient language forms. Such correspondences can be observed at all levels of the language, whether in the formation of the phoneme set, verb and pronoun phrasing, or sentence structures.

According to Egyetem TV’s Választár series, the Finno-Ugric affinity of the Hungarian language is mainly proven by the methods of historical-comparative linguistics. This method has been used worldwide since the 19th century to investigate relationships between languages. The kinship of languages of the same origin is based not only on vocabulary similarities but also on systematic similarities in phonology, grammatical structures, and syntactic features.

Finno-Ugric languages, Wiki Commons

Phonological, alphabetic and syntactic similarities

Phonological correspondences, for example, show that certain sound changes have occurred consistently in related languages. This is the case with the relationship between Hungarian “kő” (stone) and Finnish “kivi”, which may seem surprising at first sight but can be deduced from linguistic history.

There are also common features in grammatical structures. For example, the Hungarian agglutinative system of suffixation is similar to that of other Finno-Ugric languages. The use of cases, verb formation, and possessive person marking show clear affinities between the Finno-Ugric languages.

In the field of syntactic structures, the similarity is less striking, as the order of sentence parts varies in a relatively limited way across the world’s languages. Nevertheless, there are structural elements that link Hungarian with the Finno-Ugric family of languages.

The most important Hungarian words of Finno-Ugric origin

There are a number of words in the Hungarian language that can be proven to be of Finno-Ugric origin. These include words that denote basic concepts, such as names of body parts (hand, head), terms related to nature (water, tree), and names of basic actions (eat, drink).

There are words of Finno-Ugric origin that, at first glance, do not seem to have a cognate meaning in other Finno-Ugric languages. For example, the relationship between Hungarian “kő” (stone) and Finnish “kivi” is more difficult to recognise because of phonetic changes.

Source: Pixabay

Why is there a misconception about the origin of the Hungarian language?

The Finno-Ugric origin of the Hungarian language is disputed by many people for several reasons. One of the main factors is that the relationship between Hungarian and the other Finno-Ugric languages is very distant in both space and time. The languages of the Nordic cognates seem completely alien to the ordinary Hungarian speaker, which makes it difficult to accept the kinship.

Another reason is that the issue of Hungarian linguistic affinity has often taken on identity and political dimensions. In the 18th and 19th centuries, when the proof of Finno-Ugric linguistic kinship began to be provided, many people found it difficult to accept the idea that the Hungarians were linguistically related to peoples from the north. In the last century, and even today, a number of alternative theories have emerged, often based on historical, archaeological, or genetic arguments, but these cannot replace linguistic evidence.

Finno-Ugric conferences and cultural contacts

Cultural and scientific contacts between peoples speaking Finno-Ugric languages have a long history. The first major meetings took place as early as the early 20th century, when Hungary, Finland, and Estonia had closer ties. These meetings provided an opportunity to promote research in Finno-Ugric linguistics and to foster a common cultural heritage.

Today, there are still Finno-Ugric conferences and meetings where scientific and cultural issues are discussed. These events help to maintain contact with smaller Finno-Ugric-speaking communities, especially Finno-Ugric peoples in Russia, whose language and culture are under threat.

Research into the Finno-Ugric origins of Hungarian continues, and although there are many misconceptions and debates surrounding the issue, linguistic evidence clearly shows that Hungarian belongs to the Finno-Ugric language family. However, linguistic affinity is not the same as ethnic or genetic affinity, which can be a source of much misunderstanding. The aim of scientific research is to establish objective facts, regardless of political or cultural sensitivities.

Read also:

What languages have influenced the Hungarian language?

Could you pass a Hungarian language exam? Rather than fueling a regulatory trade war, the paper advocates for policies that align incentives, promote digital innovation and enhance consumer welfare on both sides of the Atlantic.

To discuss the ideas behind the paper and the broader vision for EU–US cooperation, we spoke with three leading voices from the Consumer Choice Center. Yaël Ossowski, Deputy Director, brings years of experience in transatlantic policy and consumer advocacy. Eglė Markevičiūtė, Head of Digital & Innovation Policy and former Deputy Minister at the Lithuanian Ministry of Economy and Innovation, contributes deep insight from both the public and innovation sectors. Zoltán Kész, Government Affairs Manager and former Member of the Hungarian Parliament, adds a valuable perspective from the intersection of civil society and policymaking.

Together, they explore how smart, cooperative regulation can move beyond protectionism and toward shared prosperity.

The proposal calls for a consumer-focused approach related to U.S.-EU trade. How can the Trump administration balance domestic industrial reshoring with maintaining low prices and product variety for consumers, especially in the midst of a brutal tariff war?

Yaël Ossowski: Frankly, it’s uncertain how drastically increasing the cost of importing source materials and goods from abroad will do much more beyond raising prices for consumers. If the goal is to incentivize companies to reinvest in US factories, this is a long-term calculation done by private investors that must take a myriad of factors into account, including government policies, taxes, tariffs, labor, and much more. There are some voices in the administration that prefer targeted tariffs, which still lead to rising costs, but this would be much preferable to a blanket tax increase on 330 million Americans and the firms that serve them.

How should the US approach reshoring policies without sliding into protectionism or full decoupling from China, considering consumer costs and innovation?

Yaël Ossowski: Effective tax reforms and deregulation would go a long way to shore up American and foreign investors’ interests in bringing their operations to domestic US shores. The invisible tax on innovators that exists within the US regulatory system – think bureaucratic rules and prescriptions – should be reasonably scaled down so that consumers can gain more value from an environment that encourages innovation rather than just rudimentary compliance.

How can Europe deepen Atlantic supply chains without undermining the EU’s push for “strategic autonomy” in key industries?

Eglė Markevičiūtė: I’d like to focus on tech-related issues. Europe has long emphasized the importance of strategic autonomy in the digital domain. Recently, a more nuanced vision has emerged with the development of the Eurostack proposal—a plan to enhance Europe’s self-reliance in critical technological sectors. Crucially, the architects of Eurostack stress that “complete self-sufficiency is neither feasible nor desirable.” Instead, the initiative advocates for strengthening strategic capabilities while fostering beneficial international partnerships.

This reminds us that strategic autonomy doesn’t have to come at the expense of transatlantic cooperation. Strategic autonomy must be calculated and measured, guided by clear goals like expanding consumer choice and generating broader economic benefits—not driven by ideology. It’s essential to evaluate both the short- and long-term benefits of deeper digital collaboration with the U.S., especially when it comes to secure supply chains, shared innovation, and regulatory alignment.

Lastly, although regulatory alignment may seem impossible at this particular point in time, both the EU and the US would benefit from regulatory and standard alignment.

As for better US-EU alignment on digital rules, is there room for regulatory convergence, or are the philosophical differences too wide?

Eglė Markevičiūtė: Not necessarily. Take AI, for example. While President Biden’s original Executive Order on AI was revoked in January, the U.S. is currently preparing both an AI Action Plan and a new Executive Order. Questions on privacy, energy, and algorithms will have to be addressed. In this context, the EU’s experience—both positive and negative—with the AI Act could offer valuable insights for U.S. policymakers.

Regulatory convergence doesn’t mean one side must fully adopt the other’s approach. But open dialogue is essential. Despite criticism of the EU-U.S. Trade and Technology Council (TTC), I believe it should be revitalized—with both new and longstanding issues on the table. The potential for alignment, especially in fast-moving areas like AI, cybersecurity, and digital trade, is too important to ignore.

Given the paper’s concern about EU digital regulation and recent news from Brussels, what role should US tech companies play in advocating for regulatory interoperability with the EU?

Yaël Ossowski: U.S. tech companies are uniquely positioned to bridge the regulatory gap between Washington and Brussels. Operating on both sides of the Atlantic, they understand firsthand the practical challenges and implications of divergent digital rules. As such, they should play an active role in fostering regulatory interoperability—by sharing their experiences, proposing workable solutions, and encouraging constructive dialogue between regulators. Where possible, liberal democracies should establish streamlined trade agreements, if not data corridors, to remove the friction that comes with trying to store and deliver data across borders.

If US-EU trade deepens under this proposal, what opportunities or risks are there for Central and Eastern European economies like Hungary?

Zoltán Kész: Before the US elections, Viktor Orban went all-in and put his bets on Trump’s victory and invested heavily in his reelection. Has it paid off? If we look at whether the country is benefiting from Trump’s trade wars, I doubt it. His high tariffs mean reducing exports to the US, hindering American investments in Hungary, and increasing uncertainty. Moreover, since the Hungarian economy heavily depends on the German automobile industry, many local factories will be hard hit. And, of course, prices will increase, especially for cars and technological imports.

The Consumer Choice Center proposal offers many benefits to Hungary and Central and Eastern Europe. We could have better access to the American markets (cars, medicines, IT), imports would be cheaper (for example, American technologies and agricultural products), Hungarian companies could take part in the global supply chains, and definitely, there could be a wider choice, lower prices, and better services. There is one other thing the present government might not favor for political reasons: not depending on China since Orban is interested in deepening Hungarian-Chinese relations.

How can Hungary benefit from a US-EU partnership that aims to reduce reliance on Russian energy, without increasing domestic costs?

Zoltán Kész: Well, we know very well that for Orban, dependence on Russian gas is a political decision, not an economic one. There are speculations on how the Hungarian Prime Minister and his circles are financially interested in maintaining the country’s dependence on Russian gas. Looking at this objectively, the country would definitely benefit from the proposal. Diversification in this field would mean lower prices and less dependence on Russia. Hungary would not be solely dependent on Russian gas if there were cooperation between the EU and the US in LNG, renewables, and nuclear energy.

Hungary can only benefit from Transatlantic energy sector relations if EU-US cooperation relies on free markets, technological innovation, and real competition, not political protectionism.

How can the US collaborate with allies better, especially in the EU, to reduce dependency on China for rare earth elements, and still maintaining competitive pricing?

Yaël Ossowski: Our paper outlines the areas of energy, mineral development, and defense as not only the most pressing but also the most lucrative for firms and consumers on both sides of the ocean. The truth is that liberal democracies in North America and Europe have much more in common than geopolitical foes in China or Russia. Scaling up LNG infrastructure to deliver and receive energy, as well as opening up mineral agreements and strong defense collaboration with industry partners would continue to create the freest and most prosperous trading bloc in the world. If our governments can commit to this, then all citizens and consumers can benefit and provide a model for the world.

Read also:

Estonian government: PM Orbán part of Putin’s team, Hungary may lose its voting right – rea more HERE

President Vucic talking about military alliance with Hungary: Bosnian Serb leader Dodik would join

A short history of the Hungarian hajdús with PHOTOS

Daily News Hungary

Special Hungary

Hungarian history

Hungary

Hungary news

The hajdús played a decisive role in Hungary’s early modern history as cattle drovers turned warriors, shaping settlements, politics, and fortifications across the eastern plains.

In the second half of the 14th century, as Western Europe experienced growing urbanisation and a rising population, demand for meat surged dramatically. However, repeated pillaging and raiding prompted the enactment of numerous laws against them. Some hajdús served in private militias of landowners in exchange for acquiring certain free-peasant rights, while many others became border fortress soldiers. During the Fifteen Years’ War (1593–1606), large numbers joined the imperial army. From 1604 onward, they formed the core of István Bocskai’s rebellion.

Tiszavasvári, Photo: Jácint Mayer

Bocskai and the hajdús are inseparable in Hungarian history. On February 21, 1605, he was elected Prince of Transylvania, and on April 20, Prince of Hungary—a title later confirmed by Sultan Ahmed I. For a long time, it was believed that the Sultan and his advisors sent a royal crown to Bocskai in recognition of his success. However, a recently uncovered report from an envoy’s mission suggests it was actually Bocskai who requested the crown through diplomatic channels.

Overall, the campaign—particularly involving the hajdús and their Turkish-Tatar allies—inflicted devastating destruction across Hungary. As a result, the general population often saw them not as defenders of noble privileges or religious freedom, but as enemies. Most of the country’s population and influential leaders withheld support from Bocskai, and the resulting civil war largely served Ottoman interests. With all this in mind, one might fairly ask: can this otherwise successful revolt truly be considered a war of independence?

Hajdúszovát, Photo: Jácint Mayer

Hungarian historical memory retains a vivid and often polarised view of the hajdús. These structures served a dual purpose: providing local defense and functioning as part of the broader border fortress system. After the hajdús settled down, the urban layout of their towns was designed with security in mind, as protection against attacks and Turkish raids was a top priority. Hajdú towns featured a tripartite design—moving inward from the outskirts were the “latorkert” (outlaw zone), the “huszárvár” (cavalry fort), and the inner fortress—structurally mirroring the military fortresses of the era.

The fortress walls were integral to the inner fort and primarily protected the centrally located church. Typically surrounded by square defensive walls with loopholes and four corner towers, these churches often included separate watchtowers for early threat detection and defense preparations. Today, significant remnants of this fortification style can still be seen in Tiszavasvári, Hajdúnánás, Hajdúdorog, Hajdúszoboszló, and Hajdúszovát.

To read or share this article in Hungarian, click here: Helló Magyar

Read also:

Timeless beauty in Budapest: How much do you know about Margaret Island? – read more HERE

The astonishing story of Visegrád’s Salamon Tower, where Dracula was held captive: PHOTOS

Estonian government: PM Orbán part of Putin’s team, Hungary may lose its voting right – UPDATE: FM Szijjártó

John Woods

Politics

Baltic region

European Union

Hungary

Hungary news

Russia

war in Ukraine

Estonian FM Margus Tsahkna recently talked about Orbán and identified him as a Putin team member. Even though the metro underground station was renewed years ago, the surface area remained as it was in the Kádár era, giving no opportunity to people to stop and chat. The space favours cars with a huge parking lot. Photo: FB/Vitézy

Locals have been complaining about public safety and cleanliness for years, so the municipal council started public planning concerning the area. Mayor Krisztina Baranyi would have allocated money for the renewal, but his former leftist allies killed that initiative before the 9 June elections. The previous mayor of the district, Ferenc Gegesy, said that it was because of the high price. He said they could have spent HUF 100-200 million (EUR 246,000-492,000) on the project, but not HUF 2 billion (EUR 4.9 million) as Baranyi suggested. Leftist councillors of the municipal council did not vote for the initiative for the same reason.

In 2025, the new municipal council, in which Baranyi gained a majority following the 9 June elections, conducted a public procurement with unchanged technical content and got a price of HUF 400 million (EUR 985,000) lower than before. Therefore, the surface renewal of the M3 metro station will begin for HUF 1.6 billion (EUR 4 million). Interestingly, only 60% of the area belongs to Ferencváros, and 40% is in the ownership of the Budapest municipal council. As a result, the new park’s area will be greater than ever.

In the centre, there will be a fountain encircled by pavilions and a service centre. They will plant new trees and link the new area with the green area of the József Attila Quarter. Thanks to the development, the green spaces will increase by 38.6%.
