And at that time<MH6256> the Philistines<MH6430> were ruling<MH4910> over Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Samson<MH8123> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Timnah<MH8553> with his father<MH1> and mother<MH517>, and came<MH935> as far<MH5704> as the vineyards<MH3754> of Timnah<MH8553>; and behold<MH2009>, a young<MH3715> lion<MH738> <i>came</i> roaring<MH7580> toward<MH7122> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the Spirit<MH7307> of the LORD<MH3068> rushed<MH6743a> upon<MH5921> him, so that he tore<MH8156> it apart<MH8156> as one tears<MH8156> apart<MH8156> a young<MH1423> goat<MH1423>, though he had<MH369> nothing<MH3972, 369> in his hand<MH3027>; but he did not tell<MH5046> his father<MH1> or mother<MH517> what<MH834> he had done<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> and talked<MH1696> to the woman<MH802>; and she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>looked<MH3474, 5869> pleasing<MH3474> to Samson<MH8123>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>When he returned<MH7725> later<MH4480, 3117> to take<MH3947> her, he turned<MH5493> aside<MH5493> to look<MH7200> at the carcass<MH4658> of the lion<MH743b>; and behold<MH2009>, a swarm<MH5712> of bees<MH1682> and honey<MH1706> were in the body<MH1472a> of the lion<MH743b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So he took<MH7287b> out<MH7287b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>the honey on his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>hands<MH3709> and went<MH1980> on, eating<MH398> as he went<MH1980>. When he came<MH1980> to his father<MH1> and mother<MH517>, he gave<MH5414> <i>some</i> to them and they ate<MH398> <i>it;</i> but he did not tell<MH5046> them that he had took<MH7287b> the honey<MH1706> out<MH7287b> of the body<MH1472a> of the lion<MH743b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then his father<MH1> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the woman<MH802>; and Samson<MH8123> held<MH6213a> a feast<MH4960> there<MH8033>, for the young<MH970> men<MH970> customarily did<MH6213a> this<MH3651>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When they saw<MH7200> him, they brought<MH3947> thirty<MH7970> companions<MH4828> to be with him. <p class="hdg">Samson’s Riddle</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Samson<MH8123> said<MH559> to them, “Let me now<MH4994> propose<MH2330> a riddle<MH2420> for you; if<MH518> you actually<MH5046> tell<MH5046> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the answer within the seven<MH7651> days<MH3117> of the feast<MH4960>, and solve<MH4672> it, then I will give<MH5414> you thirty<MH7970> linen<MH5466> wraps<MH5466> and thirty<MH7970> outfits<MH2487> of clothes<MH899b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you are<MH3201> unable<MH3808, 3201> to tell<MH5046> me, then you shall give<MH5414> me thirty<MH7970> linen<MH5466> wraps<MH5466> and thirty<MH7970> outfits<MH2487> of clothes<MH899b>.” And they said<MH559> to him, “Propose<MH2330> your riddle<MH2420>, so that we may hear<MH8085> it.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to them, <p class="indent1stline">“Out<MH3318> of the eater<MH398> came<MH3318> something<MH3978> to<MH3978> eat<MH3978>, <t><p class="indent1">And out<MH3318> of the strong<MH5794> came<MH3318> something<MH4966> sweet<MH4966>.” <p class="R">But they could<MH3201> not tell<MH5046> <i>the answer to</i> the riddle<MH2420> in three<MH7969> days<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>fourth day<MH3117> that they said<MH559> to Samson’s<MH8123> wife<MH802>, “Entice<MH6601b> your husband<MH376>, so that he will tell<MH5046> us the riddle<MH2420>, or<MH6435> we will burn<MH8313> you and your father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> with fire<MH784>. Have you invited<MH7121> us to impoverish<MH3423> us? <i>Is this</i> not <i>so?</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So Samson’s<MH8123> wife<MH802> wept<MH1058> in front<MH5921> of him and said<MH559>, “You only<MH7534b> hate<MH8130> me, and you do not love<MH157> me; you have proposed<MH2330> a riddle<MH2420> to the sons<MH1121> of my people<MH5971a>, and have not told<MH5046> <i>it</i> to me.” And he said<MH559> to her, “Behold<MH2009>, I have not told<MH5046> <i>it</i> to my father<MH1> or mother<MH517>; so should I tell<MH5046> you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>However she wept<MH1058> before<MH5921> him for seven<MH7651> days<MH3117> while<MH834> their feast<MH4960> lasted<MH1961>. And on the seventh<MH7637> day<MH3117> he told<MH5046> her because<MH3588> she pressed<MH6693> him so hard<MH6693>. She then told<MH5046> the riddle<MH2420> to the sons<MH1121> of her people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> said<MH559> to him on the seventh<MH7637> day<MH3117> before<MH2962> the sun<MH2775a> went<MH935> down, <p class="indent1stline">“What<MH4100> is sweeter<MH4966> than<MH4480> honey<MH1706>? <t><p class="indent1">And what<MH4100> is stronger<MH5794> than<MH4480> a lion<MH738>?” <p class="R">And he said<MH559> to them, <p class="indent1stline">“If<MH3884> you had not plowed<MH2790a> with my heifer<MH5697>, <t><p class="indent1">You would not have found<MH4672> out<MH4672> my riddle<MH2420>.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the Spirit<MH7307> of the LORD<MH3068> rushed<MH6743a> upon<MH5921> him, and he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Ashkelon<MH831> and killed<MH5221> thirty<MH7970> men<MH376> of them and took<MH3947> what<MH2488> they were wearing<MH2488> and gave<MH5414> the outfits<MH2487> of<MH2487> clothes<MH2487> to those who told<MH5046> the riddle<MH2420>.
