and he blew<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782> and said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;We have<MH369> no<MH369> share<MH2506> in David<MH1732>, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH3808> do we have an inheritance<MH5159> in the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448>; <t><p class="indent1">Every<MH376> man<MH376> to his tents<MH168>, Israel<MH3478>!&#8221; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>withdrew<MH5927> from following<MH310> David<MH1732> <i>and</i> followed<MH310> Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075>; but the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>remained<MH1692> loyal<MH1692> to their king<MH4428>, from the Jordan<MH3383> even to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> came<MH935> to his house<MH1004> in Jerusalem<MH3389>, and the king<MH4428> took<MH3947> the ten<MH6235> women<MH802>, the concubines<MH6370> whom<MH834> he had left<MH5117> behind<MH5117> to take<MH8104> care<MH8104> of the house<MH1004>, and put<MH5414> them in custody<MH1004, 4931> and provided<MH3557> them with<MH3557> food<MH3557>, but did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>have<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> them. So they were locked<MH6887a> up<MH6887a> until<MH5704> the day<MH3117> of their death<MH4191>, living<MH2424> as widows<MH491>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Amasa<MH6021>, &#8220;Summon<MH2199> the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> for me <i>within</i> three<MH7969> days<MH3117>, and be present<MH5975> here<MH6311> yourself<MH859>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So Amasa<MH6021> went<MH1980> to summon<MH2199> <i>the men of</i> Judah<MH3063>, but he was delayed<MH309> longer than<MH4480> the set<MH4150> time<MH4150> which<MH834> he had designated<MH3259> for him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Abishai<MH52>, &#8220;Now<MH6258> Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075> will do<MH7489a> us more<MH4480> harm<MH7489a> than<MH4480> Absalom<MH53>; take<MH3947> your lord&#8217;s<MH113> servants<MH5650> and pursue<MH7291, 310> him, so<MH6435> that<MH6435> he does not<MH6435> find<MH4672> for himself fortified<MH1219> cities<MH5892b> and escape<MH5337> from our sight<MH5869>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So Joab&#8217;s<MH3097> men<MH376> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> after<MH310> him, along with the Cherethites<MH3774>, the Pelethites<MH6432>, and all<MH3605> the warriors<MH1368>; and they left<MH3318> Jerusalem<MH3389> to pursue<MH7291, 310> Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>When they were at the large<MH1419> stone<MH68> which<MH834> is in Gibeon<MH1391>, Amasa<MH6021> came<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>to meet<MH6440> them. Now Joab<MH3097> was dressed<MH2296, 3830> in his military<MH4055> attire<MH3830>, and over<MH5921> it <i>he had</i> a belt<MH2290a> with a sword<MH2719> in its sheath<MH8593> strapped<MH6775> on at his waist<MH4975>; and as he went<MH3318> forward<MH3318>, it fell<MH5307> out<MH5307>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Joab<MH3097> said<MH559> to Amasa<MH6021>, &#8220;Is it going<MH7965> well<MH7965> for you, my brother<MH251>?&#8221; And Joab<MH3097> took<MH270> hold<MH270> of Amasa<MH6021> by the beard<MH2206> with his right<MH3225> hand<MH3027> to kiss<MH5401a> him. <p class="hdg">Amasa Murdered</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But Amasa<MH6021> was not on guard<MH8104> against the sword<MH2719> which<MH834> was in Joab&#8217;s<MH3097> hand<MH3027>, so he struck<MH5221> him in the belly<MH2570> with it and spilled<MH8210> out<MH8210> his intestines<MH4578> on the ground<MH776>, and did<MH8138> not <i>strike</i> him again<MH8138>, and he died<MH4191>. Then Joab<MH3097> and his brother<MH251> Abishai<MH52> pursued<MH7291, 310> Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now one<MH376> of Joab&#8217;s<MH3097> young<MH5288> men<MH5288> stood<MH5975> by him and said<MH559>, &#8220;Whoever<MH4310, 834> favors<MH2654a> Joab<MH3097> and whoever<MH4310, 834> is for David<MH1732>, follow<MH310> Joab<MH3097>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But Amasa<MH6021> was wallowing<MH1556> in <i>his own</i> blood<MH1818> in the middle<MH8432> of the road<MH4546>. And when the man<MH376> saw<MH7200> that all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> stood<MH5975> still<MH5975>, he removed<MH5437> Amasa<MH6021> from the road<MH4546> to the field<MH7704> and threw<MH7993> a garment<MH899b> over<MH5921> him when<MH3512c> he saw<MH7200> that everyone<MH3605> who came<MH935> by him stood<MH5975> still<MH5975>. <p class="hdg">Revolt Put Down</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>As<MH3512c> soon<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> he was removed<MH3014> from the road<MH4546>, all<MH3605> the men<MH376> went<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> after<MH310> Joab<MH3097> to pursue<MH7291, 310> Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now he went<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> through all<MH3605> the tribes<MH7626> of Israel<MH3478> to Abel<MH59>, that is, Beth-maacah<MH1038>, and all<MH3605> the Berites<MH1276>; and they assembled<MH6950> and went<MH935> after<MH310> him as well<MH637>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And they came<MH935> and besieged<MH6696a, 5921> him in Abel<MH62> Beth-maacah<MH1038>, and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>built<MH8210> up<MH8210> an assault<MH5550> ramp<MH5550> against<MH413> the city<MH5892b>, and it stood<MH5975> against the outer<MH2426> rampart<MH2426>; and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were with Joab<MH3097> were wreaking<MH7843> destruction<MH7843> in order to topple<MH5307> the wall<MH2346>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then a wise<MH2450> woman<MH802> called<MH7121> out<MH7121> from the city<MH5892b>, &#8220;Listen<MH8085>, listen<MH8085>! Please<MH4994> tell<MH559> Joab<MH3097>, &#8216;Come<MH7126> here<MH5704, 2008> that I may speak<MH1696> with you.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So he approached<MH7126> her, and the woman<MH802> said<MH559>, &#8220;Are you Joab<MH3097>?&#8221; And he answered<MH559>, &#8220;I am.&#8221; Then she said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Listen<MH8085> to the words<MH1697> of your slave<MH519>.&#8221; And he said<MH559>, &#8220;I am listening<MH8085>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then she spoke<MH559>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;In the past<MH7223> they used to say<MH559>, &#8216;They will undoubtedly<MH7592> ask<MH7592> <i>advice</i> at Abel<MH59>,&#8217; and that<MH3651> is<MH3651> how<MH3651> they ended<MH8552> <i>a dispute.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>I <i>am one</i> of those who are ready<MH7999b> for<MH7999b> peace<MH7999b> <i>and</i> faithful<MH539> in Israel<MH3478>. You are trying<MH1245> to destroy<MH4191> a city<MH5892b>, even a mother<MH517> in Israel<MH3478>. Why<MH4100> would you swallow<MH1104> up<MH1104> the inheritance<MH5159> of the LORD<MH3068>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Joab<MH3097> replied<MH6030a>, &#8220;Far<MH2486> be it, far<MH2486> be it from me that I would consume<MH1104> or destroy<MH7843>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Such<MH3651> is not the case<MH1697>. But a man<MH376> from the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Ephraim<MH669>, Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075> by name<MH8034>, has raised<MH5375> his hand<MH3027> against King<MH4428> David<MH1732>. Only<MH905> turn<MH5414> him over<MH5414>, and I will depart<MH1980> from the city<MH5892b>.&#8221; And the woman<MH802> said<MH559> to Joab<MH3097>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, his head<MH7218> will be thrown<MH7993> to you over<MH1157> the wall<MH2346>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_samuel/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then the woman<MH802> wisely<MH2451> came<MH935> to all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>. And they cut<MH3772> off<MH3772> the head<MH7218> of Sheba<MH7652a> the son<MH1121> of Bichri<MH1075> and threw<MH7993> it to Joab<MH3097>. So he blew<MH8628> the trumpet<MH7782>, and they were dispersed<MH6327a> from the city<MH5892b>, each<MH376> to his tent<MH168>.
