Reflector-Augmented Solar Energy Cooker","grobid_abstract":"The design philosophy, construction and measured performances of a plane-reflector augmented box-type solar-energy cooker are presented. The experimental solar cooker consists of an aluminum plate absorber painted matt black and a double-glazed lid. The bottom and sides are lagged with fibreglass wool insulator. The reflector consists of a wooden-framed commercially available specular plane mirror which is sized to form a cover for the box when not in use. Provision is made for four cooking vessels, each capable of holding upto 1 kg of water. Results of thermal performance tests show stagnation absorber plate temperatures of 138°C and 119°C for the cooker with and without the plane reflector in place respectively. Boiling times of 60 min (3600 s) and 70 min (4200 s) for 1 kg of water, for the cooker with and without the plane reflector in place, respectively, were recorded. The solar cooker performance has been rated using the first figure of merit (F 1 ) on the no-load test and the second figure of merit (F 2 ) on the sensible heat tests. Predicted water boiling times using the two figures of merit compared favourably with measured values. The performance of the cooker with the plane reflector in place was improved tremendously compared to that without the reflector in place. The experimental solar cooker consisting of two plane reflector suitable positioned in a north-south configuration on an inclined framework, is mounted of box type solar cooker to reflected solar radiation on the base absorber of the cooker. The top cover (Glazing) is tilted at 23.16° corresponding to the latitude of Jabalpur (the location of the test site). The performance testing and comparison were done experimentally during summer season in the month of May at Jabalpur. Provision is made for four cooking vessels (two different size), each capable of holding 1 kg of water. The experimental result obtained show stagnation absorber plate temperatures of 144°C and 124°C for the with and without plane reflector in place respectively. It show that stagnation temperature 20-30 °C higher than that of the without reflector. Boiling time of water 48 minute and 52 minute for 1 kg of water equally distributed of each vessels, 76 minute and 95minute for 1 kg load with one pot loaded, for the cooker with and without the plane reflector place, respectively were recorded. The solar cooker performance has been rated using the first figure of merit (F1) is 0.1126 & 0.09 with and without plane reflector respectively on the no load test and the second figure of merit (F2) is 0.2380& 0.2764 on sensible heat test with and without plane reflector place respectively. Also calculating the optical efficiency of glass is 59.58%. The boiling time of water and second figure of merit compared to using different quantity of water with and without plane reflector. Almost 1.4billion people of our planet face daily shortage of energy. Therefore, the need for alternative source of energy for food preparation has given rise to the use of box type solar cooker for cooking. Though use of box solar cooker is not new and have even been commercialised in some countries like India there is still need for research to improve its cooking efficiency by increasing the temperature in the cooking chamber. To achieve this movable additional plane mirror reflector was introduced as an improvement to the system in addition to the one already attached to its side. Stagnation temperature test was carried out in the afternoon under solar radiation level of 1085W/m 2 and ambient temperature of 35.7°C. In this study, a box type solar cooker was fabricated and tested under Lucknow city (Uttar Pradesh) prevailing climate conditions. The presented cooker is the box type solar cooker with four aluminum foil reflectors. The testing was conducted at Lucknow city in Kirti Solar Limited. The two pots are identical in shape and volume, with one of the pots external surface provided with fins. The result of two tests of water heating , revealed that Test.1 held on 7th April with 1 Liter of water was raised to 94°C in 112 and 124 minutes for finned and un-finned cooking pot respectively. These figures represent 9.6% reduction in heating time. Similarly Test 2 help on 5th may with 1 Liter of water was raised to 94°C in 97 minutes and 114 minutes for the finned and un-finned cooking pots respectively. And these figure represent 15% reduction in heating time. The concentrator, consisting of two planar re?ectors suitably positioned in an east–west (EW) con?guration on an inclined framework, is mounted on the box of the cooker to re?ect incident solar radiation onto the base absorber of the cooker. The design angle of inclination of the framework is taken equal to the latitude of the location and it is adjusted seasonally.
