It is a <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="monolithic" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/monolithic" data-type="MW">monolithic</a>, monopolistic party that dominates the political life of China. It is the major policy-making body in China, and it sees that the central, provincial, and local organs of government carry out those policies.</p><!--[MOD11]--><span class="marker MOD11 mod-inline"></span> <!--[PREMOD12]--><span class="marker PREMOD12 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">The CCP’s structure is as follows: once every five years or so, a National Party Congress of some 2,000 delegates (the number varies) meets in <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="plenary" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plenary" data-type="MW">plenary</a> session to elect a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Central-Committee-Soviet-political-body" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Central Committee</a> of about 200 full members, which in turn meets at least once annually. The Central Committee elects a <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Politburo" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Political Bureau</a> (Politburo) of about 20–25 full members; that body is the ruling leadership of the CCP. The Political Bureau’s Standing Committee of about six to nine of its most-authoritative members is the highest echelon of leadership in the CCP and in the country as a whole.
