Confirmation of this came after an investigation was made following a claim that a tree in Wales had grown beyond the height of the Scottish giant.</font><br> <p><font size="4" face="Arial">The Welsh Douglas Fir at Powys Castle was recently measured at a height of 62.5 metres, suggesting it had surpassed the height of the Highland tree, which was measured at 62 metres in 2003. The discovery was made during filming of a new BBC series, "Trees Which Made Britain", which will be broadcast in Autumn 2006.</font><br> <br> <font size="4" face="Arial">The BBC crew, working with staff from Kew Gardens, travelled north of the border to check the Welsh claim. The crew, together with Jim Patterson of the Tree Register of the British Isles and Forestry Commission Scotland staff, remeasured Scotland's tallest tree using the latest laser technology. Readings were taken from three locations and gave an average of a few centimetres over 64 metres, reconfirming the tall giant's status as Scotland's, and indeed Britain's, tallest tree.</font><br> <br> <font size="4" face="Arial">Inverness Forest District Manager David Jardine said;</font><br> <ul><font size="4" face="Arial">"I am delighted to hear that Dughall Mor, which means 'big dark stranger' in Gaelic, remains the tallest tree in Britain, if not in Europe. This tree is one of a number of very fine trees at Reelig Glen, near Inverness, where around 25,000 visitors enjoy the tall trees walk every year.
