Historically, this refers to the Babylonian captivity, where the Israelites were taken from their land due to their disobedience. The restoration is a recurring theme in the Bible, symbolizing God's faithfulness and mercy. It also foreshadows the ultimate restoration through Jesus Christ, who delivers humanity from the captivity of sin.
and have compassion on you
God's compassion is a central theme throughout Scripture, highlighting His loving and merciful nature. This compassion is not just emotional but is demonstrated through action, as seen in the deliverance and restoration of His people. It reflects the New Testament message of grace, where God's compassion is fully realized in the sacrifice of Jesus for the sins of the world.
and gather you from all the nations
This phrase indicates the widespread dispersion of the Israelites, known as the Diaspora. It underscores God's sovereignty and His ability to bring His people back from any corner of the earth. This gathering is prophetic, pointing to the eschatological hope of a future regathering of Israel and the ultimate gathering of believers from all nations into the Kingdom of God, as seen in Revelation.
to which the LORD your God has scattered you
The scattering of the Israelites was a consequence of their disobedience and idolatry, fulfilling the warnings given in earlier chapters of Deuteronomy. This scattering serves as a reminder of the seriousness of covenant faithfulness. However, it also sets the stage for God's redemptive plan, where He uses even the consequences of sin to bring about His purposes, ultimately culminating in the gathering of all believers through Christ.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The author of Deuteronomy, delivering God's message to the Israelites.

2. Israelites
The chosen people of God, who are being addressed in this passage.

3. The LORD (Yahweh)
The covenant-keeping God of Israel, who promises restoration.

4. Captivity
Refers to the exile and dispersion of the Israelites due to their disobedience.

5. Nations
The various lands where the Israelites were scattered during their exile.
Teaching Points
God's Faithfulness in Restoration
Despite Israel's disobedience, God remains faithful to His promises. And further, that the day of the gathering of the captivity is great, and attended with difficulty; as though He Himself must be there to take hold visibly of the hand of each man, and bring him from his place, as it is said, "And ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel" (Isaiah 27:12).
