The name Ahasuerus is traditionally understood to be a title or throne name, rather than a personal name, and is often equated with the Persian king Xerxes I, who reigned from 486 to 465 BC.

1. Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther

In the Book of Esther, Ahasuerus is the king of Persia who is central to the narrative. The account unfolds in the Persian capital of Susa, where Ahasuerus holds a grand banquet and subsequently deposes his queen, Vashti, for her refusal to appear before him and his guests. This sets the stage for Esther, a Jewish woman, to become queen. Esther's rise to prominence is pivotal in the deliverance of the Jewish people from a plot devised by Haman, a high-ranking official in Ahasuerus's court.

The Book of Esther provides a detailed account of Ahasuerus's reign, including his lavish lifestyle and the political intrigue of his court. Esther 1:1-2 introduces him: "This is what happened in the days of Ahasuerus, who reigned over 127 provinces from India to Cush. In those days King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne in the citadel of Susa."

2. Ahasuerus in the Book of Ezra

In the Book of Ezra, Ahasuerus is mentioned briefly in the context of opposition to the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra 4:6 states, "At the beginning of the reign of Ahasuerus, an accusation was lodged against the people of Judah and Jerusalem." This reference is often considered to be a different Ahasuerus than the one in Esther, possibly Cambyses II, the son of Cyrus the Great, who reigned before Darius I.

3. Ahasuerus in the Book of Daniel

In the Book of Daniel, Ahasuerus is mentioned as the father of Darius the Mede. Daniel 9:1 reads, "In the first year of Darius son of Xerxes (a Mede by descent), who was made ruler over the kingdom of the Chaldeans." The identification of this Ahasuerus is debated, with some scholars suggesting he may be a different figure altogether, possibly a fictional or symbolic character used to convey a theological message.

Historical and Cultural Context

The identification of Ahasuerus with Xerxes I is supported by historical records and the timeline of events described in the Book of Esther. Xerxes I is known for his failed invasion of Greece and his opulent court, which aligns with the portrayal of Ahasuerus in Esther. The Persian Empire during this period was vast, stretching from India to Ethiopia, as noted in Esther 1:1.

The narrative of Esther highlights themes of providence, courage, and the survival of the Jewish people in a foreign land. Ahasuerus's role as a monarch who is both powerful and susceptible to influence underscores the vulnerability and resilience of the Jewish community in exile.

Theological Significance

Ahasuerus's portrayal in the Bible serves as a backdrop for the unfolding of God's providential care for His people. Despite the absence of direct mention of God in the Book of Esther, the events that transpire under Ahasuerus's reign demonstrate divine intervention and the fulfillment of God's promises to protect and preserve Israel. The account of Esther and Ahasuerus is celebrated annually in the Jewish festival of Purim, commemorating the deliverance of the Jews from Haman's plot.

In summary, Ahasuerus is a complex figure whose identity and role vary across different biblical texts. His presence in the narrative of Esther, in particular, provides a rich tapestry of historical and theological insights into the life of the Jewish people during the Persian Empire.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Ahasuerus
prince; head; chief
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Ahasuerus
(lion-king), the name of one Median and two Persian kings mentioned in the Old Testament.

In (Daniel 9:1) Ahasuerus is said to be the father of Darius the Mede. This Ahasuerus is probably Xerxes of history, (Esther 1:1) (B.C. 485), and this conclusion is fortified by the resemblance of character and by certain chronological indications, the account of his life and character agreeing with the book of Esther In the third year of Ahaseuerus was held a great feast and assembly in Shushan the palace, (Esther 1:3) following a council held to consider the invasion of Greece. He divorced his queen Vashti for refusing to appear in public at this banquet, and married, four years afterwards, the Jewess Esther, cousin and ward of Mordecai. Five years after this, Haman, one of his counsellors, having been slighted by Mordecai, prevailed upon the king to order the destruction of all the Jews in the empire. But before the day appointed for the massacre, Esther and Mordecai influenced the king to put Haman to death and to give the Jews the right of self-Defence.

ATS Bible Dictionary
Ahasuerus
A royal title, common to several Median and Persian kings named in Scripture.

1. But the other kings of Persia are all mentioned in Scripture by their own names, or at least definitely pointed out; while Xerxes is not mentioned, unless under this name. Besides, recent researches show that Hebrew word for Ahasuerus is readily formed from the Persian name of Xerxes, the name Xerxes being only a Greek corruption of the Persian. See ESTHER.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
There are three kings designated by this name in Scripture.
(1.) The king mentioned in Ezra 4:6, probably the Cambyses of profane history, the son and successor of Cyrus (B.C. 529).
(3.) The son of Darius Hystaspes, the king named in the Book of Esther. He ruled over the kingdoms of Persia, Media, and Babylonia, "from India to Ethiopia." This was in all probability the Xerxes of profane history, who succeeded his father Darius (B.C. 485). In the LXX. version of the Book of Esther the name Artaxerxes occurs for Ahasuerus. He reigned for twenty-one years (B.C. 486-465). He invaded Greece with an army, it is said, of more than 2,000,000 soldiers, only 5,000 of whom returned with him. Leonidas, with his famous 300, arrested his progress at the Pass of Thermopylae, and then he was defeated disastrously by Themistocles at Salamis. It was after his return from this invasion that Esther was chosen as his queen.
Strong's Hebrew
8657.
