These guidelines were prepared to enhance the integrity of human embryonic stem cell research by encouraging responsible practices in the conduct of that research. They address the many ethical, legal, scientific, and policy issues that are of concern to the public, and the scientific community. The guidelines report also called for the establishment of a national body to assess periodically the adequacy of the guidelines and to provide a forum for continuing discussion of human embryonic stem cell research. <br/><br/> In response to requests from the scientific community, the National Academies is establishing the Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee to (1) monitor and review scientific developments and changing ethical, legal, and policy issues related to human embryonic stem cell research, (2) discuss the need for revisions to the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20060905232909/http://www.nap.edu/catalog/11278.html">Guidelines for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research</a>, and (3) prepare periodic reports to update the Guidelines as needed.
