In an effort to jumpstart debate in archaeology about the potential for a study of children in the past, the attempt was to define the child’s world generally in time, space, and structure. It applied child’s play as an analytical tool towards considering the child’s world from an archaeological perspective. While the ’child’ has matured itself, the field has contributed to the establishment of the archaeology of childhood as a subject of interest in research worldwide. Technological and methodological advancements have improved the abilities of archaeologists to study the worlds of children and childhood in past societies. In this essay I answer this question by summarising and then problematizing the kinds of books, art and objects used by scholars since the eighteenth century to understand the lives of children. One of the points that I wish to underscore is that a profound evidentiary shift has occurred in recent decades. The shift, I suggest, is motivated by a rising scholarly interest in childmade evidence, that is, objects definitively used and made by children on an everyday basis. When viewed in light of a child's historical context, such evidence can be used to gain insight into the developmental foundations of the modern world. It is clear that children contribute to the decisions and motivations of adults, who are often the producers and distributors of the material remains in the archaeological record. However, this relationship is all but completely unexplored in archaeological theory up until very recently. Through an analysis of recent shifts in the study of childhood within anthropology as a whole, and later specifically within archaeology, I argue that an archaeology of childhood is an essential lens through which archaeologists can reconstruct past societies much more fully.
