id="caption-attachment-145315" class="wp-caption-text">Suede (Photo: Dean Chalkley)</p></div> <p><a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/suede">Suede</a> and <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/manic-street-preachers">Manic Street Preachers</a> have two of the most distinctive identities in alternative music but both also share certain broader common ground. Both found initial popularity in the early 90s and have since ploughed lone furrows of sorts, embracing a sense of outsiderdom and thriving on the hinterlands of any scene or movement, unafraid of attracting controversy. On this basis, them coming together for a joining headline tour made sense and offered a thrilling opportunity to see both play shorter, more hit-laden sets than usual.</p> <p>Tonight’s show took place on the hill outside of Alexandra Palace which provided an excellent natural auditorium, with the strong sunshine an additional bonus. Neither band feels a natural ‘outdoor’ band, their respective sounds feeling more suited to the intensity of the enclosed darkness that comes with indoor venues but both excelled amid the greenery of north London.</p> <p>They have been taking turns to headline on the tour and tonight Manic Street Preachers were first on stage and they waste no time in launching straight into some of their biggest songs. You Love Us, Everything Must Go and Motorcycle Emptiness are despatched with power and precision, the latter in particular sounding as all-consuming and stratospheric as ever in the outdoor setting. Further musical blasts of adrenaline follow with the likes of You Stole The Sun From My Heart before <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/the-anchoress"><strong>The Anchoress</strong></a> joins them on stage to handle lead vocals on Little Baby Nothing and Your Love Alone Is Not Enough.</p> <p>This Is Yesterday is the only track played from The Holy Bible (and feels something of a moderate choice) and A Design For Life makes an appearance mid-set which feels unusual but such positioning cannot detract from its anthemic, grandiose, sweeping power. As with many songs, it’s accompanied by polemical lines being projected across the stage backdrop. They may have moved on since they were first penned but <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/james-dean-bradfield"><strong>James Dean Bradfield</strong></a> still conveys them with urgency and impact, and still spins away to deliver his guitar parts. Nicky Wire strikes a similarly consistent image, pogoing and effecting split kicks in the same way he did 20 years ago.</p> <p>They acknowledge their more recent history with To Repel Ghosts from Lifeblood (“a song from an album frequently unloved by its bad members and dare I say some of you” Bradfield comments) and the stadium rock sheen of Walk Me To The Bridge from 2014’s <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/manic-street-preachers-futurology">Futurology</a>. Alongside these, the only real deep cuts are Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier and No Surface, All Feeling from Everything Must Go. Wire pays tribute to the “esoteric intelligence and forlorn beauty” of Richey Edwards ahead of an especially incisive Kevin Carter while La Tristesse Durera (Scream To A Sigh) and From Despair To Where are both met with similar adulation. He also recalls their first London show 35 years ago at the Horse and Groom on Great Portland Street.</p> <p>Like Manic Street Preachers, Suede have settled into their new roles as the elder statesmen of alternative rock with ease, and prove to be a gloriously ragged proposition, led by the force of nature that is <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/artist/brett-anderson"><strong>Brett Anderson</strong></a>. They begin with Turn Your Brain Off And Yell from 2022’s <a href="https://www.musicomh.com/reviews/albums/suede-autofiction">Autofiction</a>, an early sign that their set will include more in the way of new material. The early hits soon arrive however, a procession of magnificent moments that remind us of their primal, raw power. Trash, Animal Nitrate, The Drowners and We Are The Pigs make for a thrilling run, each accompanied by appropriate album/single artwork on the backdrop. We’re immediately transported back to the mid ’90s amid crashing guitars and vocal melodrama.</p> <p>Anderson spends much of the time either actually inside the crowd or close to it, energised by the physical contact of adoring fans. The large screens either side of the stage capture the sheer physicality of his performance, often sprawled on stage recovering from the intensity of it all. Unsurprisingly therefore they drop in a few slower, quieter songs, notably the baroque beauty of Still Life and a crowd-pleasing rendition of The Wild Ones, both just Anderson accompanied by Richard Oakes on guitar (the rest of the band are all in place tonight, at Osman on bass, Simon Gilbert on drums and the otherworldly, waif-like multi-instrumentalist Neil Codling).</p> <p>Elsewhere, New Generation and Filmstar are both lean and lithe while Saturday Night still has a heartwarming faded glamour. Shadow Self, She Still Leads Me On and The Only Way I Can Love You, all from Autofiction, are all played alongside a new, currently untitled song that will appear on their next album. Anderson pays tribute to Manic Street Preachers describing them as “one of their only friends” and (as with Bradfield to a lesser extent earlier) he’s happy to set the crowd up to support with vocals, allowing himself a bit of freedom to feel his way through each song. They close with the triple blast of So Young, Metal Mickey and Beautiful Ones, each ramping up the dynamic further until there’s nothing left to give.
