but <i>anyone</i> who surrenders<MH3318> to the Chaldeans<MH3778> will live<MH2421a> and have<MH1961> his <i>own</i> life<MH5315> as plunder<MH7998>, and stay<MH2421a> alive<MH2421a>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: &#8216;This<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will certainly<MH5414> be handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the army<MH2428> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> and he will capture<MH3920> it.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then the officials<MH8269> said<MH559> to the king<MH4428>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> have this<MH2088> man<MH376> put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>, since<MH3588, 5921, 3651> he is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>discouraging<MH7503, 3027> the men<MH376> of war<MH4421> who are left<MH7604> in this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, by speaking<MH1696> words<MH1697> like these<MH428> to them; for this<MH2088> man<MH376> is not seeking<MH1875> the well-being<MH7965> of this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>, but rather<MH3588, 518> their harm<MH7463a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> said<MH559>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, he is in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>hands<MH3027>; for the king<MH4428> can<MH3201> <i>do</i> nothing<MH369, 1697> against you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So they took<MH3947> Jeremiah<MH3414> and threw<MH7993> him into the cistern<MH953a> <i>of</i> Malchijah<MH4441> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> son<MH1121>, which<MH834> was in the courtyard<MH2691a> of the guardhouse<MH4307>; and they let<MH7971> Jeremiah<MH3414> down<MH7971> with ropes<MH2256a>. Now in the cistern<MH953a> there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> water<MH4325> but <i>only</i> mud<MH2916>, and Jeremiah<MH3414> sank<MH2883> into the mud<MH2916>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But Ebed-melech<MH5663> the Ethiopian<MH3569>, a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>eunuch<MH5631>, while he was in the king&#8217;s<MH4428> palace<MH1004>, heard<MH8085> that they had put<MH5414> Jeremiah<MH3414> in the cistern<MH953a>. Now the king<MH4428> was sitting<MH3427> at the Gate<MH8179> of Benjamin<MH1144>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and Ebed-melech<MH5663> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the king&#8217;s<MH4428> palace<MH1004> and spoke<MH1696> to the king<MH4428>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>&#8220;My lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, these<MH428> men<MH376> have acted<MH7489a> wickedly<MH7489a> in all<MH3605> that they have done<MH6213a> to Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030> whom<MH834> they have thrown<MH7993> into the cistern<MH953a>; and he will die<MH4191> right<MH8478> where<MH8478> he is because<MH4480, 6440> of the famine<MH7458>, for there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> more<MH5750> bread<MH3899> in the city<MH5892b>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> commanded<MH6680> Ebed-melech<MH5663> the Ethiopian<MH3569>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Take<MH3947> thirty<MH7970> men<MH376> from here<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>under your authority<MH3027> and bring<MH5927> Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030> up<MH5927> from the cistern<MH953a> before<MH2962> he dies<MH4191>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So Ebed-melech<MH5663> took<MH3947> the men<MH376> under his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>authority<MH3027> and went<MH935> into the king&#8217;s<MH4428> palace<MH1004> to <i>a place</i> beneath<MH8478> the storeroom<MH214>, and took<MH3947> from there<MH8033> worn-out<MH1094> clothes<MH5499> and worn-out<MH1094> rags<MH4418>, and let<MH7971> them down<MH7971> by ropes<MH2256a> into the cistern<MH953a> to Jeremiah<MH3414>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then Ebed-melech<MH5663> the Ethiopian<MH3569> said<MH559> to Jeremiah<MH3414>, &#8220;Now<MH4994> put<MH7760> these worn-out<MH1094> clothes<MH5499> and rags<MH4418> under<MH8478> your armpits<MH679, 3027> under<MH8478> the ropes<MH2256a>&#8221;; and Jeremiah<MH3414> did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So they pulled<MH4900> Jeremiah<MH3414> out<MH4900> with the ropes<MH2256a> and lifted<MH5927> him out of the cistern<MH953a>, and Jeremiah<MH3414> stayed<MH3427> in the courtyard<MH2691a> of the guardhouse<MH4307>. <p class="hdg">Zedekiah Seeks an Answer from God</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>had Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030> brought<MH3947> to him at the third<MH7992> entrance<MH3996> that is in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>; and the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Jeremiah<MH3414>, &#8220;I am going to ask<MH7592> you something<MH1697>; do not hide<MH3582> anything<MH1697> from me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And Jeremiah<MH3414> said<MH559> to Zedekiah<MH6667>, &#8220;If<MH3588> I tell<MH5046> you, will you not certainly<MH4191> put<MH4191> me to<MH4191> death<MH4191>? Besides, if<MH3588> I give<MH3289> you advice<MH3289>, you will not listen<MH8085> to me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> swore<MH7650> to Jeremiah<MH3414> in secret<MH5643a>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> made<MH6213a> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>life<MH5315> for us, I certainly<MH518> will not put<MH4191> you to<MH4191> death<MH4191>, nor<MH518> will I hand<MH5414, 3027> you over<MH5414> to these<MH428> men<MH376> who<MH834> are seeking<MH1245> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>life<MH5315>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So Jeremiah<MH3414> said<MH559> to Zedekiah<MH6667>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: &#8216;If<MH518> you will indeed<MH3318> surrender<MH3318> to the officers<MH8269> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>, then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>you will live<MH2421a>, this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will not be burned<MH8313> with fire<MH784>, and you and your household<MH1004> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>survive<MH2421a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you do not surrender<MH3318> to the officers<MH8269> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>, then this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will be handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the Chaldeans<MH3778>; and they will burn<MH8313> it with fire<MH784>, and you yourself<MH859> will not escape<MH4422> from their hands<MH3027>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> said<MH559> to Jeremiah<MH3414>, &#8220;I am<MH1672> in<MH1672> fear<MH1672> of<MH1672> the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> have deserted<MH5307> to the Chaldeans<MH3778>, for they may hand<MH5414, 3027> me over<MH5414> to them, and they will abuse<MH5953a> me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But Jeremiah<MH3414> said<MH559>, &#8220;They will not turn<MH5414> you over<MH5414>. Please<MH4994> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>obey<MH8085, 6963> the LORD<MH3068> in what<MH834> I am saying<MH1696> to you, so that it may go<MH3190> well<MH3190> for you and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>you may live<MH2421a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you keep refusing<MH3985> to surrender<MH3318>, this<MH2088> is the word<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has shown<MH7200> me: <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>&#8216;Behold<MH2009>, all<MH3605> of the women<MH802> who<MH834> have been left<MH7604> in the palace<MH1004> of the king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> are going to be brought<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the officers<MH8269> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>; and those<MH1992a> women will say<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>Your close<MH7965> friends<MH376, 7965> <t><p class="indent1">Have misled<MH5496> and overpowered<MH3201> you; <t><p class="indent1">While your feet<MH7272> were sunk<MH2883> in the mire<MH1206>, <t><p class="indent1">They turned<MH5472> back<MH268>.&#8221; <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>They are also going to bring<MH3318> out<MH3318> all<MH3605> your wives<MH802> and your sons<MH1121> to the Chaldeans<MH3778>, and you yourself<MH859> will not escape<MH4422> from their hand<MH3027>, but will be seized<MH8610> by the hand<MH3027> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>, and this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> will be burned<MH8313> with fire<MH784>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Zedekiah<MH6667> said<MH559> to Jeremiah<MH3414>, &#8220;Let no<MH408> one<MH376> know<MH3045> about these<MH428> words<MH1697>, and you will not die<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But if<MH3588> the officials<MH8269> hear<MH8085> that I have talked<MH1696> with you and come<MH935> to you and say<MH559> to you, &#8216;Tell<MH5046> us now<MH4994> what<MH4100> you said<MH1696> to the king<MH4428> and what<MH4100> the king<MH4428> said<MH1696> to you; do not hide<MH3582> <i>it</i> from us and we will not put<MH4191> you to<MH4191> death<MH4191>,&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>then you are to say<MH559> to them, &#8216;I was presenting<MH5307> my plea<MH8467> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>, not to make me return<MH7725> to the house<MH1004> of Jonathan<MH3083> to die<MH4191> there<MH8033>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/38-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> came<MH935> to Jeremiah<MH3414> and questioned<MH7592> him.
