Mysia was a region in the northwest of Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. This area was known for its diverse population and strategic location, serving as a crossroads for various cultures and trade routes. The mention of Mysia highlights the apostles' commitment to spreading the Gospel to all corners of the known world, emphasizing the universal nature of the Christian message. The Greek word for "border" (ὅριον, horion) suggests a boundary or limit, symbolizing the apostles' readiness to push beyond familiar territories in obedience to God's call.
they tried to enter Bithynia
The attempt to enter Bithynia reflects the apostles' proactive approach to evangelism. Bithynia was a Roman province located to the northeast of Mysia, known for its prosperous cities and significant Jewish population. The Greek word for "tried" (ἐπιχειρέω, epicheireō) implies an earnest effort or undertaking, indicating the apostles' determination to preach the Gospel. This phrase underscores the importance of human initiative in ministry, balanced by sensitivity to divine guidance. The apostles' desire to enter Bithynia demonstrates their strategic planning and awareness of the spiritual needs of different regions.
but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit them
This phrase introduces a divine intervention in the apostles' plans. The "Spirit of Jesus" is a unique expression, emphasizing the close relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ. It highlights the Trinitarian nature of God, where the Spirit acts in accordance with the will of Jesus. The Greek word for "permit" (εἴασεν, eiasen) means to allow or let happen, indicating a deliberate divine decision to redirect the apostles' path. This divine guidance serves as a reminder that while human plans are essential, they must be subordinate to God's sovereign will. The Spirit's intervention teaches believers the importance of being attuned to God's leading, even when it means altering well-laid plans. This moment of redirection ultimately led to the spread of the Gospel in Europe, demonstrating God's perfect timing and purpose.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(7) They assayed to go into Bithynia.--The verse describes very vividly the uncertainty produced day by day by this conflict between human plans and divine direction. Bithynia, lying to the north, had, like Pontus, a considerable Jewish population scattered along its shores, and they were inclined to take that as their next field of labour. They were led on, however, as before, westward and not northward. There is no record of any considerable halt in this stage of their journey, and they probably found few favourable openings in a district which, for great part of the way, presented only unimportant villages. The use of the archaic form "assayed" for "essayed," or "attempted," calls for a word of notice. (Comp. Acts 9:26.)
The Spirit suffered them not.--The better MSS. and versions give the reading, "the Spirit of Jesus," which is of some dogmatic importance, as confirming the doctrine that the Spirit stands in the same relation to the Son as to the Father, and may therefore be spoken of either as the Spirit of God, or of Christ (Romans 8:9), or of Jesus.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 7. - And when for after, A.V. and T.R.; come over against (κατὰ) for come to, A.V.; and the Spirit of Jesus for but the Spirit, A.V. and T.R. But the phrase, "the Spirit of Jesus," occurs nowhere in the New Testament, and is on that account very improbable here, though there is considerable manuscript authority for it. It is accepted by Meyer and Alford and Wordsworth, following Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, etc.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
And
δὲ (de)
Conjunction
Strong's 1161: A primary particle; but, and, etc.

when they came
ἐλθόντες (elthontes)
Verb - Aorist Participle Active - Nominative Masculine Plural
Strong's 2064: To come, go.

to the border of
κατὰ (kata)
Preposition
Strong's 2596: A primary particle; down, in varied relations (genitive, dative or accusative) with which it is joined).

Mysia,
Μυσίαν (Mysian)
Noun - Accusative Feminine Singular
Strong's 3465: Mysia, a region of Asia Minor.

they tried
ἐπείραζον (epeirazon)
Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Plural
Strong's 3985: To try, tempt, test.
