For a while now, we’ve been about five people large. We all have jobs and other responsibilities, and over the years, those responsibilities have demanded more of our time. The original PC release of Dear Esther came out some time ago, but now it is out on PlayStation 4. The Landmark Edition release of the game features a new Director’s Commentary in addition to the main game, but that’s about all that’s new. With this style of game, there isn’t much in terms of gameplay, besides walking and looking around. That’s not a bad thing though, as the appeal to the game is exploring its story, mixed with the visuals and excellent musical score.

Dear Esther was the first game released by developer The Chinese Room, who other PlayStation gamers may know from 2015’s Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, another first person adventure. As Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture was more about exploring a town with a little freedom for the player to explore, Dear Esther is a much more linear adventure. You begin as an unknown individual who is exploring a mysterious island, listening to a narrator who is telling stories of the past. As you explore and progress down the linear path, you’ll learn more and more about what happened.

One of the most appealing parts of the experience is its atmosphere. The mixture of storytelling, visuals and the musical score evoke an eeriness to the island. The island is desolate, and remnants of individuals that used to live there add to its mystery. Abandoned homes, shipwrecked boats and cryptic symbols deepened my engagement of its atmosphere. Seeing one of the remnants of the past made me want to explore it and try to piece together what happened. You aren’t directly given context to what happened in every little moment, but I like to think some of it was left up to your imagination. What you see visually and what the narrator portrays is about all of the story you’ll get in Dear Esther. There aren’t any notes to read or items to pick up, but there are four mysterious urns that act as a minor collectible for the game.

For my first playthrough I completed Dear Esther: Landmark Edition in about an hour and a half. Going back for the Director’s Commentary will take about the same amount of time, which I highly recommend. The Director’s Commentary was recorded fairly recently, as the developers mention games such as Firewatch and Gone Home. The developers talk about how the game started as a Half-Life 2 mod and how it progressed over the years. They also mention other games such as System Shock 2 and Dead Space and how they were inspirations for their first game. Another voice on the Director’s Commentary was the composer, and hearing her reasons for certain sound cues or times the musical score would kick in is insightful. Another aspect of the commentary is how the new wave of first person adventures is portrayed in today’s gaming world, and how they feel these games are currently represented.

The visuals for Dear Esther have held up for the most part over the years. Objects and textures look good, though some are muddled if you get too close. Gazing at the game’s large landscapes from a hilltop is where the game really shines, as the sense of scale and the sound of the wind blowing by really immerses you in its world.

Dear Esther isn’t a groundbreaking experience, but it did help pioneer more games in its genre. It will take you a little under 2 hours to complete the game’s four main areas, but it is a game that you might want to play again upon completing it to further understand its plot. The Director’s Commentary will add another playthrough for those looking for an interesting background on how the game was created and its inspirations.

A copy of this game was provided by the publisher for review purposes. It’s also, in most aspects, a great way to bring a classic into the present day. Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is still the same game it was back in 1989, it still controls just as it did before, and even the original art and music are available for anyone who’d rather experience the game as they remember.

The premise here is simple enough, Wonder Boy (or Wonder Girl if you prefer), has been cursed into a half-human/half-lizard beast by the Meka-Dragon. To undo the curse you’ll have to traverse all of Monster Land and defeat each of the curse-wielding dragons. On top of that, with each dragon defeated Wonder Boy/Girl is transformed into a new creature, these new transformations might not be the immediate desired outcome, but they do lead to all new methods of traversing the game’s world.

Lizardcube’s version of The Dragon’s Trap includes new hand drawn art as well as a re-imagined soundtrack, both of which are fantastic. If you’re not a fan of these new additions, however, the game makes it very easy to quickly switch between the retro and modern versions of both visuals and music. The switch happens in seconds and, as someone who’s not familiar with the original game, I really appreciated the ability to swap between each version with the press of a button.

The Dragon’s Trap is an accurate recreation of the original game which, for the most part, is really great. Your journey in Wonder Boy is all about exploring Monster World in each of the various cursed forms. The lizard form is able to breath fire, as a mouse, you can climb certain walls, the piranha form gives you the ability to swim, the lion is essentially a tank, and as a hawk you’ll soar through the sky. These forms break up the game well and ensures that you’ll periodically be traveling through the world in a slightly different way. They’re also great about opening up new secrets in earlier areas in the game that were previously unreachable. Things never get old and exploring is always rewarded. However, the actual movement in Wonder Boy is quite slippery and can lead to a good deal of frustration. This, combined with the continuous knock-back that can happen in certain boss fights, leads to some aggravating situations that tend to be a small blemish on an otherwise enjoyable game.

At the main menu, moving the cursor to the title of the game and selecting it will change Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap to Wonder Girl: The Dragon’s Trap. It’s a nice little touch that serves to highlight the inclusion of a playable female character in the game, which is also much appreciated. Dig deeper into the unlockables menu and you’ll find a hefty amount of concept art, animation reels, and behind the scene videos from the game’s development. It’s all rounded out into a rather nice package that ultimately demonstrates the clear love that Lizardcube has for Wonder Boy.

A copy of this game was provided by the publisher for review purposes. It instead offers a deliberate old-school inspired game that offers smart solutions to problems that many games in the genre have faced.

Alyssa L’Salle’s journey kicks into gear just a few hours into the game when, along with a couple friends, she discovers a massive conspiracy that calls into question everything she’s known. Forced to go rogue, Alyssa and company are branded as traitors and must now do whatever it takes to keep a rather powerful device out of the wrong hands. From a broad perspective, the story throughout Cosmic Star Heroine is one of the few things that I never grew too attached to. There’s nothing inherently wrong with it, it’s just that in comparison to everything else the game has to offer, this is the thing that ended up taking a back seat. That said, my appreciation for Cosmic Star Heroine’s world and characters comes in the form of Chapter 5’s incredible series of boss fights, the live band you watch preform at the night club, and partnering with a detective to clear my name. These were generally short segments in the game, but they’re also the key moments in which I really felt attached to the universe crafted by Zeboyd Games.

The main draw for Cosmic Star Heroine, and the reason why I’ll endlessly recommend this to my gaming friends, is its combat system. Combat takes place in the game world (no separate battle screen) and triggers whenever your party comes within range of a group of enemies. Everything is turn based and the turn order can be easily viewed on the right side of the screen. The catch, however, is that there’s no MP, most abilities require a turn to recharge, and all items are single use within battle. The game then builds upon this foundation and continues by introducing a Hyper mechanic that boosts a character’s attack every few turns, a Style percentage that impacts stats as battles progress, and a huge emphasis on exploiting weaknesses as well as buff and debuff skills. What this leads to, is a game where every single battle starts exactly the same way. You’ll never have to worry about stocking up on ethers, instead, you’ll always have access to any given ability and every fight in the game is built around that.

Cosmic Star Heroine’s battle system requires an immense amount of strategy, especially on the harder difficulty settings. You’ll need to learn when to buff characters, when to use certain abilities, and how to ensure that you’ll get the most out of every single attack. This is topped off with a skill system for each character that ensures you’ll never grow out of an ability. Alyssa’s water spell that she has at the beginning of the game is still useful in the final boss fight because she’ll never learn ‘water 2’. Instead, every new skill, every weapon, and every item found is unique and has its very own purpose. You’ll need to sort out which skills and items you take into battle with each character’s loadout screen, but what’s important here is that everything found and learned is significant in its own way. I absolutely love that, instead of focusing on just a couple strong spells and attacks, I had to learn the ins and outs of every single thing the game provided me. The result was a ~20 hour RPG where every single encounter was exciting and required me to put some sort of thought into each move.

Outside of combat, Alyssa’s journey stretches across three planets and eventually a full on space ship where any extra party members and crew will stay behind. There’s all sorts of people/aliens to meet throughout the universe, some of which you can recruit, whereas others might have some sort of side objective for you to complete. All of this fleshes out the universe and characters within it and ultimately just adds a good bit to the overall game. It’s worth taking your time, exploring each area and town fully, and ensuring that you speak to all NPCs.

All of this goes without addressing the fantastic soundtrack that’s provided by Hyper Duck Soundworks (Dust: An Elysian Tail, Toto Temple Deluxe). Cosmic Star Heroine is simply an incredible JRPG inspired adventure that’s even more impressive when you consider how small the team is that made it. Aside from a story that didn’t completely pull me in, my only real complaint is that the game’s UI can, at times, be a little unclear. In battles an AoE attack sometimes wouldn’t highlight multiple enemies (even when it’d still hit them) and in shops there didn’t seem to be a way to compare equipment. I also ran into a couple small glitches, one that forced me to reload a save file, which is a bummer, but luckily Zeboyd Games have been quick to patch out these issues. Ultimately, Cosmic Star Heroine really shouldn’t be passed up, it’s a fantastic throwback to games like Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star that, like Shovel Knight before it, presents a modern twist that makes it a clear standout indie release.

A copy of this game was provided by the publisher for review purposes. Edith, with the recent passing of her mother, is the only remaining Finch left alive and by returning to her childhood home, she hopes to find answers, or perhaps just a sense of closure. What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of short tales and strange adventures that chronicle the final moments of each member of Edith’s family. It’s a somber, yet, humbling journey through the history of a family that just couldn’t seem to shake its past.

What Remains of Edith Finch starts out following the path set forth by games like Gone Home, Firewatch, and Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture. For a good portion of the game you’ll control Edith Finch as she explores her childhood home and waxes nostalgic about every little detail that’s been left untouched. However, what sets this apart, from a myriad of other exploration and narrative heavy games, is in its ability to give you – the player – a unique perspective and involvement in each aspect of the story. (It also just has a really clever use of subtitles that, for me, added a lot to the overall presentation.) As Edith, it’s genuinely interesting to explore every nook and cranny of a house that’s played host to multiple generations of a single family. There’s family photos, hundreds of books lining various shelves, and all sorts of other details that are fun to stare at, but what’s far more interesting is taking the time to see how each member of the Finch family has left their mark. One obvious example is the music box sitting in the hallway that was hand crafted for Barbara Finch. Opening the music box reveals a scene that directly references Barbara’s lead role in a Bigfoot themed movie, specifically the role that made her famous. In addition, there’s other details that leave hints as to what other members of the Finch family were like, many of which become far more interesting on a second playthrough. It’s not just that the Finch residence is meticulously detailed and very much worth paying attention to, these details give context and tell a story about just who the Finch family was through a number of generations. There are specific items that clearly belong to certain members of the Finch family, and seeing as these things have overlapped one another through the years really drives home not just the passage of time, but the unique personalities of each individual who once called this place home.

Edith’s reason for returning isn’t just to feel nostalgic about her old home and to point out the possessions of her ancestors. It’s to uncover the truth that her mother seemed so determined to keep from getting out. With the death of each Finch, Edith’s mom would seal off the door’s to the departed’s bedrooms, while her grandmother would then create peep holes. With a special key in her possession, Edith can now access secret passages that will lead through the bedrooms of past Finches, which, will ultimately provide her with the very answers she’s been looking for. Walking into each bedroom in many ways feels like traveling to the past. They remain completely untouched and are essentially time capsules dedicated to the very person who lived in them. They also play host to a journal, poem, or any other form of writing that offers insight into the final day of any given member of the Finch family. The first story follows a young girl named Molly who is sent to her room without supper. Molly later wakes up in the middle of the night with an uncontrollable desire to eat, and she proceeds to do just that. Molly goes on to eat various things around her bedroom before changing forms and hunting down prey as a cat, owl, shark, and tentacle monster. It’s a surreal story told completely from Molly’s perspective and ultimately ends, as the way all of these stories do, with her death. From a purely video game perspective, Molly’s story is the first of many times in which What Remains of Edith Finch offers an entirely unique way of interacting with the game world. The fact that Molly’s story is able to work as well as it does, without the need to explain each new method of control, is really impressive and that’s the case for every single story. On top of that, each story shares an entirely unique perspective and thus looks and controls completely different from anything else in the game. For Molly, it’s a short sequence in which we’re able to peer into the overactive imagination of a young girl, but for others (like Barbara and Lewis) it’s a chance for the game to do things that I truly haven’t seen a video game do before.

It’s also interesting to note that every story about any particular member of the Finch family tends to lean into a fantastically weird fictional world that, at first, might feel intended to be more metaphorical than literal. Though, the game seems to leave just enough room for interpretation on that one so, to me, things may not be as cut and dry as they initially seem. These short stories do often feel like fairytales themselves, but what’s so endlessly fascinating is the way in which they seem to parallel and perhaps bleed over into whatever reality the Finches might’ve lived in. And ultimately, I’m not sure the truth behind whether these strange tales are fiction or not even matters. Instead, the message of What Remains of Edith Finch is far brighter than the overwhelming presence of death might lead you to believe. Its overall message is an uplifting one and, to be frank, almost feels like a weird companion piece to Night in the Woods.

What Remains of Edith Finch is a personal story, one that really hit home for me in just about every way imaginable. It’s a game that finds beauty in death and demonstrates the importance of appreciating what little time we are given to experience what life has to offer. The story of the Finch family is strange and at times might not seem possible, but dig deep enough, and you’ll find a wonderful game with a profound perspective on life, family, and what we leave behind.

A copy of this game was provided by the publisher for review purposes. So what happens when Puyo Puyo and Tetris are grouped together? We get Puyo Puyo Tetris, a pretty healthy collection of game types representing both as well as a fusion of sorts that’s sure to challenge even advanced Puyo and Tetris players alike.

For starters, Puyo Puyo Tetris offers Lessons that range from Beginner to Advanced that set out to explain the intricacies of both Puyo Puyo and Tetris. While I’m familiar enough with Tetris, it was nice to refresh my memory of Puyo Puyo while gaining some tips as well. There’s also a third set of lessons that focus on the Fusion mode, where both puyos and tetrominoes fill the same board, that are a tremendous help – especially considering just how complex that specific mode can get. All in all these lessons are well made and are great introductions to each play type.

In local play, Puyo Puyo Tetris offers a number of Solo and Multiplayer options in the arcade. Versus mode allows for a quick round of Puyo Puyo or Tetris as well as an Endurance contest to see how many opponents you can beat in a single game. There’s also Fusion, which combines both game types, while also introducing its own set of mechanics. For instance, puyos can’t hold tetrominoes, so the blocks always fall to the bottom while the blobs rise to the top. Fusion mode requires a totally different approach from other modes, and while that does prove difficult, it’s also a really interesting change of pace. Additionally there’s Swap mode, which switches between Puyo Puyo and Tetris boards every 30 seconds, a Party mode that adds item ‘power-ups’ to the equation, and Big Bang which presents preset formations that players must clear as quickly as possible. From Versus to Big Bang, each mode is different enough to stand on its own and goes a long way in filling out the entire package.

There’s also a Challenge mode, which offers three additional single-player challenges for each game type. Puyo Puyo has a standard Endless mode, Endless Fever (similar to Big Bang), and a Tiny Puyo mode which allows for up to 10 columns of puyos. On the Tetris side, Sprint tasks you with clearing 40 lines as fast as possible, Marathon sets a goal of 150 lines cleared, and Ultra is all about getting the highest score possible in 3 minutes. Once again, like all other modes listed thus far, each challenge brings something new to the table and fits in really nicely with everything else on offer.

Puyo Puyo Tetris isn’t just great for local play though, there’s also a feature complete online mode where you can join the Puzzle League for ranked matches, battle against random players or friends in Free Play, and even watch uploaded Replays. Puyo Puyo Tetris shines when there’s multiple players competing against each other and that’s easy to do both locally or online.

All of this doesn’t even begin to touch upon the game’s Adventure mode. In Adventure mode Ringo, Arle, and Amitie are whisked away into outer space just moments before engaging in a Puyo Puyo battle. The story essentially sees the Puyo Puyo and Tetris worlds colliding with appearances from the Puyo Puyo cast of characters as well as the Tetris-centric crew of the SS Tetra. Adventure’s 70 stage campaign is a pretty good way to ease into the many different modes available, though I can’t say that I ever found myself all that invested in the actual story.

For as much content that’s on offer here, there’s bound to be something for everybody. If you just want to stick to Tetris, you can do that! If you’re a Puyo Purist, that’s fine too! Both are excellent in their own right and the wealth of play options only helps to sweeten the deal. Puyo Puyo Tetris is packed to the brim with game modes and alternate play styles that’s perfect for parties or solo challenge runs.

A copy of this game was provided by the publisher for review purposes. It’s a clear nod to the opening of the first Guardians movie, but, due to some really stiff character animation, it doesn’t quite produce the desired effect. It makes sense that Telltale’s Guardians series, despite having no ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would aim to capture the same vibes from the first movie, but that’s a tough act to follow and only leads to this first episode feeling a bit like a direct-to-DVD version of this unlikely crew.

Having been through the Telltale routine many times before, I have to say that the first hour of “Tangled Up in Blue” mostly left me optimistic, if not downright impressed. Sure, there were a few awkward moments that could use more polish, but on the whole it felt like a decent attempt at adapting the cinematic version of the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Telltale format. It even culminates in a really well done fight with Thanos that ultimately serves as the backbone to the events that will unfold throughout the series. From there the pace slows down a bit and the rest of the episode essentially lays the groundwork for much of what’s to follow. Here, the game starts to focus on specific character moments, giving a number of 1-on-1 scenes between different members of the Guardians crew, and even digging into a bit of Star-Lord’s past. Specifically, it seems like Telltale is set to explore Peter Quill’s relationship with his mother, which could prove to be a strong point for the series going forward. With so much setup, it’s hard to say much about where the story will lead, but there are at least a few interesting plot lines introduced that have the potential to be quite interesting going forward. Unfortunately, despite a pretty good opening, there’s still a number of issues present that hold me back from being too excited about what’s to come.

While this feels a bit more polished than other Telltale games, it still suffers from stiff character animations, poor lip-sync, and a few really awkward scene transitions. On top of that, the writing is generally inconsistent, with a few standout moments in a sea of jokes that mostly fall flat. There’s also a sequence early on where Star-Lord blasts open a door and the complete lack of any sort of explosion, or any added effects, just felt odd – perhaps even unfinished.

“Tangled Up in Blue” doesn’t do much to stray from the established Telltale formula. There’s a very brief segment where the game lets you explore an area using Star-Lords rocket-boots and even play detective with a Time Scanner, but these abilities feel more like afterthoughts than anything else. Which is kind of disappointing, even at a glimpse of changing things up, the game quickly retreats back to its comfort zone. At the same time, there are some genuinely interesting places that the story seems to be going in. Whether that stuff will pay off in the end is anyone’s guess, but I’m at least interested enough to see where it’ll lead. It’s a decent start to the series, the fact that I already love these characters certainly doesn’t hurt, but the aforementioned technical issues still have me feeling quite cautious for what comes next.
The post Impressions: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – Episode One: Tangled Up in Blue first appeared on PSNStores.

Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4) Gameplay Glimpse

Curtis H

Features

Gameplay Glimpse

Media

Preview

PS4

Cosmic Star Heroine

Gameplay Glimpse are 10-30 minute videos covering a recently released PS4/Vita game.
