And she sent<MH7971> garments<MH899b> to clothe<MH3847> Mordecai<MH4782> so that he would remove<MH5493> his sackcloth<MH8242> from him, but he did not accept<MH6901> <i>them.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Esther<MH635> summoned<MH7121> Hathach<MH2047> from the king’s<MH4428> eunuchs<MH5631>, whom<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>the king had appointed<MH5975> to attend<MH6440> her, and ordered<MH6680> him <i>to go</i> to Mordecai<MH4782> to learn<MH3045> what<MH4100> this<MH2088> <i>mourning was</i> and why<MH4100> it <i>was happening.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Hathach<MH2047> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to Mordecai<MH4782> in the city<MH5892b> square<MH7339>, in front<MH6440> of the king’s<MH4428> gate<MH8179>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Mordecai<MH4782> told<MH5046> him everything<MH3605> that had happened<MH7136a> to him, and the exact<MH6575> amount<MH6575> of money<MH3701> that Haman<MH2001b> had promised<MH559> to pay<MH8254> to the king’s<MH4428> treasuries<MH1595> for the elimination<MH6> of the Jews<MH3064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He also gave<MH5414> him a copy<MH6572> of the text<MH3791> of the edict<MH1881> which<MH834> had been issued<MH5414> in Susa<MH7800> for their annihilation<MH8045>, so that he might show<MH7200> Esther<MH635> and inform<MH5046> her, and to order<MH6680> her to go<MH935> in<MH935> to the king<MH4428> to implore<MH2603a> his favor<MH2603a> and plead<MH1245> with him for her people<MH5971a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So Hathach<MH2047> came<MH935> back and reported<MH5046> Mordecai’s<MH4782> words<MH1697> to Esther<MH635>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Esther<MH635> spoke<MH559> to Hathach<MH2047> and ordered<MH6680> him <i>to reply</i> to Mordecai<MH4782>: <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“All<MH3605> the king’s<MH4428> servants<MH5650> and the people<MH5971a> of the king’s<MH4428> provinces<MH4082> know<MH3045> that for any<MH3605> man<MH376> or woman<MH802> who<MH834> comes<MH935> to the king<MH4428> in the inner<MH6442> courtyard<MH2691a>, who<MH834> is not summoned<MH7121>, he has <i>only</i> one<MH259> law<MH1881>, that he be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>, unless<MH905, 4480, 834> the king<MH4428> holds<MH3447> out<MH3447> to him the golden<MH2091> scepter<MH8275> so that he may live<MH2421a>. And I have not been summoned<MH7121> to come<MH935> to the king<MH4428> for these<MH2088> thirty<MH7970> days<MH3117>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And they reported<MH5046> Esther’s<MH635> words<MH1697> to Mordecai<MH4782>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Mordecai<MH4782> told<MH559> <i>them</i> to reply<MH7725> to Esther<MH635>, “Do not imagine<MH1819> that you in the king’s<MH4428> palace<MH1004> can escape<MH4422> any more<MH4480> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> the <i>other</i> Jews<MH3064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>For if<MH518> you keep<MH2790b> silent<MH2790b> at this<MH2088> time<MH6256>, liberation<MH7305> and rescue<MH2020> will arise<MH5975> for the Jews<MH3064> from another<MH312> place<MH4725>, and you and your father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> will perish<MH6>. And who<MH4310> knows<MH3045> whether<MH518> you have not attained<MH5060> royalty<MH4438> for such a time<MH6256> as this<MH2088>?” <p class="hdg">Esther Plans to Intercede</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Esther<MH635> told<MH559> <i>them</i> to reply<MH7725> to Mordecai<MH4782>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Go<MH1980>, gather<MH3664> all<MH3605> the Jews<MH3064> who are found<MH4672> in Susa<MH7800>, and fast<MH6684> for me; do not eat<MH398> or drink<MH8354> for three<MH7969> days<MH3117>, night<MH3915> or day<MH3117>. I and my attendants<MH5291> also<MH1571> will fast<MH6684> in the same<MH3651> way<MH3651>.
