You shall see<MG3708> <i>to it</i> yourself<MG4771>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And he threw<MG4496> the pieces<MG694> of<MG694> silver<MG694> into the temple<MG3485> sanctuary<MG3485> and left<MG402>; and he went<MG565> away<MG565> and hanged<MG519> himself. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>The chief<MG749> priests<MG749> took<MG2983> the pieces<MG694> of<MG694> silver<MG694> and said<MG3004>, &#8220;It is not lawful<MG1832> to put<MG906> them in the temple<MG2878b> treasury<MG2878b>, since<MG1893> it is money<MG5092> paid<MG5092> for blood<MG129>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And they conferred<MG4824, 2983> together<MG4824> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>with the money<MG846> bought<MG59> the Potter&#8217;s<MG2763> Field<MG68> as a burial<MG5027> place<MG5027> for strangers<MG3581>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For this<MG1352> reason<MG1352> that field<MG68> has been called<MG2564> the Field<MG68> of Blood<MG129> to this<MG4594> day<MG4594>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> that which was spoken<MG3004> through<MG1223> Jeremiah<MG2408> the prophet<MG4396> was fulfilled<MG4137>: &#8220;AND <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>THEY TOOK<MG2983> THE THIRTY<MG5144b> PIECES<MG694> OF<MG694> SILVER<MG694>, THE PRICE<MG5092> OF THE ONE WHOSE<MG3739> PRICE<MG5091> HAD BEEN SET<MG5091> by the sons<MG5207> of Israel<MG2474>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>AND <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>THEY GAVE<MG1325> THEM FOR THE POTTER&#8217;S<MG2763> FIELD<MG68>, JUST<MG2505> AS<MG2505> THE LORD<MG2962> DIRECTED<MG4929> ME.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Jesus before Pilate</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Jesus<MG2424> stood<MG2476> before<MG1715> the governor<MG2232>, and the governor<MG2232> questioned<MG1905> Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;<i>So</i> You are the King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>?&#8221; And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG5346> to him, &#8220;<i>It is as</i> you say<MG3004>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And while<MG1722> He was being accused<MG2723> by the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and elders<MG4245>, He did not offer<MG611> any<MG3762> answer<MG611>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to Him, &#8220;Do You not hear<MG191> how<MG4214> many<MG4214> things<MG4214> they are testifying<MG2649> against<MG2649> You?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And <i>still</i> He did not answer<MG611> him in<MG4314> regard<MG4314> to<MG4314> even<MG3761> a single<MG1520> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>charge<MG4487>, so<MG5620> the governor<MG2232> was<MG2296> greatly<MG3029> amazed<MG2296>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> at <i>the Passover</i> Feast<MG1859> the governor<MG2232> was accustomed<MG1486> to release<MG630> for the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>people<MG3793> <i>any</i> one<MG1520> prisoner<MG1198> whom<MG3739> they wanted<MG2309>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And at<MG5119> that<MG5119> time<MG5119> they were holding<MG2192> a notorious<MG1978> prisoner<MG1198> called<MG3004> Barabbas<MG912>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So<MG3767> when the people<MG846> gathered<MG4863> together<MG4863>, Pilate<MG4091> said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Whom<MG5101> do you want<MG2309> me to release<MG630> for you: Barabbas<MG912>, or<MG2228> Jesus<MG2424> who is called<MG3004> Christ<MG5547>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For he knew<MG3609a> that <i>it was</i> because<MG1223> of envy<MG5355> <i>that</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>they had handed<MG3860> Him over<MG3860>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And while he was sitting<MG2521> on the judgment<MG968> seat<MG968>, his wife<MG1135> sent<MG649> him <i>a message,</i> saying<MG3004>, &#8220;<i>See that you have</i> nothing<MG3367> <i>to do</i> with that righteous<MG1342> Man<MG1342>; for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>last<MG4594> night<MG4594> I suffered<MG3958> greatly<MG4183> in a dream<MG3677> because<MG1223> of Him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the elders<MG4245> persuaded<MG3982> the crowds<MG3793> to ask<MG154> for Barabbas<MG912>, and to put<MG622> Jesus<MG2424> to<MG622> death<MG622>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And the governor<MG2232> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Which<MG5101> of the two<MG1417> do you want<MG2309> me to release<MG630> for you?&#8221; And they said<MG3004>, &#8220;Barabbas<MG912>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to them, &#8220;Then<MG3767> what<MG5101> shall I do<MG4160> with Jesus<MG2424> who is called<MG3004> Christ<MG5547>?&#8221; They all<MG3956> *said<MG3004>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Crucify<MG4717> Him!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But he said<MG5346>, &#8220;Why<MG1063>, what<MG5101> evil<MG2556> has He done<MG4160>?&#8221; Yet they kept shouting<MG2896> all<MG4057> the<MG4057> more<MG4057>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Crucify<MG4717> Him!&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Pilate<MG4091> saw<MG3708> that he was accomplishing<MG5623> nothing<MG3762>, but rather<MG3123> that a riot<MG2351> was starting<MG1096>, he took<MG2983> water<MG5204> and washed<MG633> his hands<MG5495> in<MG2713> front<MG2713> of<MG2713> the crowd<MG3793>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;I am<MG1510> innocent<MG121> of this<MG3778> Man&#8217;s<MG3778> blood<MG129>; you yourselves<MG4771> shall see<MG3708>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And all<MG3956> the people<MG2992> replied<MG611, 3004>, &#8220;His blood<MG129> <i>shall be</i> on us and on our children<MG5043>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> he released<MG630> Barabbas<MG912> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>for them; but after having Jesus<MG2424> flogged<MG5417>, he handed<MG3860> Him over<MG3860> to be crucified<MG4717>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Is Mocked</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> the soldiers<MG4757> of the governor<MG2232> took<MG3880> Jesus<MG2424> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Praetorium<MG4232> and gathered<MG4863> the whole<MG3650> <i>Roman</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>cohort<MG4686> to Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And they stripped<MG1562> Him and put<MG4060> a red<MG2847> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>cloak<MG5511> on Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And after twisting<MG4120> together a crown<MG4735> of thorns<MG173>, they put<MG2007> it on His head<MG2776>, and <i>put</i> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>reed<MG2563> in His right<MG1188> hand<MG1188>; and they knelt<MG1120> down<MG1120> before<MG1715> Him and mocked<MG1702> Him, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;Hail<MG5463>, King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And they spit<MG1716> on Him, and took<MG2983> the reed<MG2563> and beat<MG5180> Him on the head<MG2776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And after<MG3753> they had mocked<MG1702> Him, they took<MG1562> the cloak<MG5511> off<MG1562> Him and put<MG1746a> His <i>own</i> garments<MG2440> back on Him, and led<MG520> Him away<MG520> to crucify<MG4717> <i>Him.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>As they were coming<MG1831> out<MG1831>, they found<MG2147> a man<MG444> of<MG2956> Cyrene<MG2956> named<MG3686> Simon<MG4613>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>whom<MG3778> they compelled<MG29> to carry<MG142> His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>cross<MG4716>. <p class="hdg">The Crucifixion</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And when they came<MG2064> to a place<MG5117> called<MG3004> Golgotha<MG1115>, which<MG3739> means<MG3004> Place<MG5117> of a Skull<MG2898>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>they gave<MG1325> Him wine<MG3631> mixed<MG3396> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>bile<MG5521> to drink<MG4095>; and after tasting<MG1089> <i>it,</i> He was unwilling<MG3756, 2309> to drink<MG4095> <i>it.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And when they had crucified<MG4717> Him, they divided<MG1266> His garments<MG2440> among<MG1266> themselves by casting<MG906> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>lots<MG2819>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And sitting<MG2521> down<MG2521>, they <i>began</i> to keep<MG5083> watch<MG5083> over<MG5083> Him there<MG1563>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And above<MG1883> His head<MG2776> they put<MG2007> up<MG2007> the charge<MG156> against<MG156> Him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>which read<MG1125>, &#8220;THIS<MG3778> IS JESUS<MG2424> THE KING<MG935> OF THE JEWS<MG2453>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>At<MG5119> that<MG5119> time<MG5119> two<MG1417> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>rebels<MG3027> *were being crucified<MG4717> with Him, one<MG1520> on the right<MG1188> and one<MG1520> on the left<MG2176>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And those<MG3588> passing<MG3899> by were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>speaking<MG987> abusively<MG987> to Him, shaking<MG2795> their heads<MG2776>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>and saying<MG3004>, &#8220;You who <i>are going to</i> destroy<MG2647> the temple<MG3485> and rebuild<MG3618> <i>it</i> in three<MG5140> days<MG2250>, save<MG4982> Yourself<MG4572>! If<MG1487> You are the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>, come<MG2597> down<MG2597> from the cross<MG4716>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>In the same<MG3668> way<MG3668> the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> also<MG2532>, along with the scribes<MG1122> and elders<MG4245>, were mocking<MG1702> <i>Him</i> and saying<MG3004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>&#8220;He saved<MG4982> others<MG243>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>He cannot<MG1410, 3756> save<MG4982> Himself<MG1438>! He is the King<MG935> of Israel<MG2474>; let Him now<MG3568> come<MG2597> down<MG2597> from the cross<MG4716>, and we will believe<MG4100> in Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>HE HAS TRUSTED<MG3982> IN GOD<MG2316>; LET GOD<MG2316> RESCUE<MG4506> <i>Him</i> now<MG3568>, IF<MG1487> HE <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>TAKES<MG2309> PLEASURE<MG2309> IN HIM; for He said<MG3004>, &#8216;I am<MG1510> the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>rebels<MG3027> who had been crucified<MG4957> with Him were also<MG2532> insulting<MG3679> Him in the same<MG846> <i>way.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>sixth<MG1623> hour<MG5610> darkness<MG4655> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>fell<MG1096> upon all<MG3956> the land<MG1093> until<MG2193> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>ninth<MG1729a> hour<MG5610>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And about<MG4012> the ninth<MG1729a> hour<MG5610> Jesus<MG2424> cried<MG310> out<MG310> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;ELI<MG2241>, ELI<MG2241>, LEMA<MG2982> SABAKTANEI<MG4518>?&#8221; that is, &#8220;MY GOD<MG2316>, MY GOD<MG2316>, WHY<MG2444> HAVE YOU FORSAKEN<MG1459> ME?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And some<MG5100> of those<MG3588> who were standing<MG2476> there<MG1563>, when they heard<MG191> it, said<MG3004>, &#8220;This<MG3778> man<MG3778> is calling<MG5455> for Elijah<MG2243>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And immediately<MG2112> one<MG1520> of them ran<MG5143>, and taking<MG2983> a sponge<MG4699>, he filled<MG4092a> it with sour<MG3690> wine<MG3690> and put<MG4060> it on a reed<MG2563>, and gave<MG4222> Him a<MG4222> drink<MG4222>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>But the rest<MG3062> <i>of them</i> said<MG3004>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>Let<MG863> us see<MG3708> if<MG1487> Elijah<MG2243> comes<MG2064> to save<MG4982> Him<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>and coming<MG1831> out<MG1831> of the tombs<MG3419> after<MG3326> His resurrection<MG1454>, they entered<MG1525> the holy<MG40> city<MG4172> and appeared<MG1718> to many<MG4183>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/27-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> as for the centurion<MG1543> and those<MG3588> who were with him keeping<MG5083> guard<MG5083> over<MG5083> Jesus<MG2424>, when they saw<MG3708> the earthquake<MG4578> and the <i>other</i> things that were happening<MG1096>, they became<MG5399> extremely<MG4970> frightened<MG5399> and said<MG3004>, &#8220;Truly<MG230> this<MG3778> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ah]</a></span>the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>!&#8221;
