You shall see<MG3708> to it yourself<MG4771>!” <a href="/matthew/27-5.htm">5</a>And he threw<MG4496> the pieces<MG694> of<MG694> silver<MG694> into the temple<MG3485> sanctuary<MG3485> and left<MG402>; and he went<MG565> away<MG565> and hanged<MG519> himself. <a href="/matthew/27-6.htm">6</a>The chief<MG749> priests<MG749> took<MG2983> the pieces<MG694> of<MG694> silver<MG694> and said<MG3004>, “It is not lawful<MG1832> to put<MG906> them in the temple<MG2878b> treasury<MG2878b>, since<MG1893> it is money<MG5092> paid<MG5092> for blood<MG129>.” <a href="/matthew/27-7.htm">7</a>And they conferred<MG4824, 2983> together<MG4824> and <a href="#fn">[b]</a>with the money<MG846> bought<MG59> the Potter’s<MG2763> Field<MG68> as a burial<MG5027> place<MG5027> for strangers<MG3581>. <a href="/matthew/27-8.htm">8</a>For this<MG1352> reason<MG1352> that field<MG68> has been called<MG2564> the Field<MG68> of Blood<MG129> to this<MG4594> day<MG4594>. <a href="/matthew/27-9.htm">9</a>Then<MG5119> that which was spoken<MG3004> through<MG1223> Jeremiah<MG2408> the prophet<MG4396> was fulfilled<MG4137>: “AND <a href="#fn">[c]</a>THEY TOOK<MG2983> THE THIRTY<MG5144b> PIECES<MG694> OF<MG694> SILVER<MG694>, THE PRICE<MG5092> OF THE ONE WHOSE<MG3739> PRICE<MG5091> HAD BEEN SET<MG5091> by the sons<MG5207> of Israel<MG2474>; <a href="/matthew/27-10.htm">10</a>AND <a href="#fn">[d]</a>THEY GAVE<MG1325> THEM FOR THE POTTER’S<MG2763> FIELD<MG68>, JUST<MG2505> AS<MG2505> THE LORD<MG2962> DIRECTED<MG4929> ME.” Jesus before Pilate<a href="/matthew/27-11.htm">11</a>Now<MG1161> Jesus<MG2424> stood<MG2476> before<MG1715> the governor<MG2232>, and the governor<MG2232> questioned<MG1905> Him, saying<MG3004>, “So You are the King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>?” And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG5346> to him, “It is as you say<MG3004>.” <a href="/matthew/27-12.htm">12</a>And while<MG1722> He was being accused<MG2723> by the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and elders<MG4245>, He did not offer<MG611> any<MG3762> answer<MG611>. <a href="/matthew/27-13.htm">13</a>Then<MG5119> Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to Him, “Do You not hear<MG191> how<MG4214> many<MG4214> things<MG4214> they are testifying<MG2649> against<MG2649> You?” <a href="/matthew/27-14.htm">14</a>And still He did not answer<MG611> him in<MG4314> regard<MG4314> to<MG4314> even<MG3761> a single<MG1520> <a href="#fn">[e]</a>charge<MG4487>, so<MG5620> the governor<MG2232> was<MG2296> greatly<MG3029> amazed<MG2296>. <a href="/matthew/27-15.htm">15</a>Now<MG1161> at the Passover Feast<MG1859> the governor<MG2232> was accustomed<MG1486> to release<MG630> for the <a href="#fn">[f]</a>people<MG3793> any one<MG1520> prisoner<MG1198> whom<MG3739> they wanted<MG2309>. <a href="/matthew/27-16.htm">16</a>And at<MG5119> that<MG5119> time<MG5119> they were holding<MG2192> a notorious<MG1978> prisoner<MG1198> called<MG3004> Barabbas<MG912>. <a href="/matthew/27-17.htm">17</a>So<MG3767> when the people<MG846> gathered<MG4863> together<MG4863>, Pilate<MG4091> said<MG3004> to them, “Whom<MG5101> do you want<MG2309> me to release<MG630> for you: Barabbas<MG912>, or<MG2228> Jesus<MG2424> who is called<MG3004> Christ<MG5547>?” <a href="/matthew/27-18.htm">18</a>For he knew<MG3609a> that it was because<MG1223> of envy<MG5355> that <a href="#fn">[g]</a>they had handed<MG3860> Him over<MG3860>. <a href="/matthew/27-19.htm">19</a>And while he was sitting<MG2521> on the judgment<MG968> seat<MG968>, his wife<MG1135> sent<MG649> him a message, saying<MG3004>, “See that you have nothing<MG3367> to do with that righteous<MG1342> Man<MG1342>; for <a href="#fn">[h]</a>last<MG4594> night<MG4594> I suffered<MG3958> greatly<MG4183> in a dream<MG3677> because<MG1223> of Him.” <a href="/matthew/27-20.htm">20</a>But the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the elders<MG4245> persuaded<MG3982> the crowds<MG3793> to ask<MG154> for Barabbas<MG912>, and to put<MG622> Jesus<MG2424> to<MG622> death<MG622>. <a href="/matthew/27-21.htm">21</a>And the governor<MG2232> <a href="#fn">[i]</a>said<MG3004> to them, “Which<MG5101> of the two<MG1417> do you want<MG2309> me to release<MG630> for you?” And they said<MG3004>, “Barabbas<MG912>.” <a href="/matthew/27-22.htm">22</a>Pilate<MG4091> *said<MG3004> to them, “Then<MG3767> what<MG5101> shall I do<MG4160> with Jesus<MG2424> who is called<MG3004> Christ<MG5547>?” They all<MG3956> *said<MG3004>, “<a href="#fn">[j]</a>Crucify<MG4717> Him!” <a href="/matthew/27-23.htm">23</a>But he said<MG5346>, “Why<MG1063>, what<MG5101> evil<MG2556> has He done<MG4160>?” Yet they kept shouting<MG2896> all<MG4057> the<MG4057> more<MG4057>, saying<MG3004>, “<a href="#fn">[k]</a>Crucify<MG4717> Him!” <a href="/matthew/27-24.htm">24</a>Now<MG1161> when Pilate<MG4091> saw<MG3708> that he was accomplishing<MG5623> nothing<MG3762>, but rather<MG3123> that a riot<MG2351> was starting<MG1096>, he took<MG2983> water<MG5204> and washed<MG633> his hands<MG5495> in<MG2713> front<MG2713> of<MG2713> the crowd<MG3793>, saying<MG3004>, “I am<MG1510> innocent<MG121> of this<MG3778> Man’s<MG3778> blood<MG129>; you yourselves<MG4771> shall see<MG3708>.” <a href="/matthew/27-25.htm">25</a>And all<MG3956> the people<MG2992> replied<MG611, 3004>, “His blood<MG129> shall be on us and on our children<MG5043>!” <a href="/matthew/27-26.htm">26</a>Then<MG5119> he released<MG630> Barabbas<MG912> <a href="#fn">[l]</a>for them; but after having Jesus<MG2424> flogged<MG5417>, he handed<MG3860> Him over<MG3860> to be crucified<MG4717>. Jesus Is Mocked<a href="/matthew/27-27.htm">27</a>Then<MG5119> the soldiers<MG4757> of the governor<MG2232> took<MG3880> Jesus<MG2424> into the <a href="#fn">[m]</a>Praetorium<MG4232> and gathered<MG4863> the whole<MG3650> Roman <a href="#fn">[n]</a>cohort<MG4686> to Him. <a href="/matthew/27-28.htm">28</a>And they stripped<MG1562> Him and put<MG4060> a red<MG2847> <a href="#fn">[o]</a>cloak<MG5511> on Him. <a href="/matthew/27-29.htm">29</a>And after twisting<MG4120> together a crown<MG4735> of thorns<MG173>, they put<MG2007> it on His head<MG2776>, and put a <a href="#fn">[p]</a>reed<MG2563> in His right<MG1188> hand<MG1188>; and they knelt<MG1120> down<MG1120> before<MG1715> Him and mocked<MG1702> Him, saying<MG3004>, “Hail<MG5463>, King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>!” <a href="/matthew/27-30.htm">30</a>And they spit<MG1716> on Him, and took<MG2983> the reed<MG2563> and beat<MG5180> Him on the head<MG2776>. <a href="/matthew/27-31.htm">31</a>And after<MG3753> they had mocked<MG1702> Him, they took<MG1562> the cloak<MG5511> off<MG1562> Him and put<MG1746a> His own garments<MG2440> back on Him, and led<MG520> Him away<MG520> to crucify<MG4717> Him. <a href="/matthew/27-32.htm">32</a>As they were coming<MG1831> out<MG1831>, they found<MG2147> a man<MG444> of<MG2956> Cyrene<MG2956> named<MG3686> Simon<MG4613>, <a href="#fn">[q]</a>whom<MG3778> they compelled<MG29> to carry<MG142> His <a href="#fn">[r]</a>cross<MG4716>. The Crucifixion<a href="/matthew/27-33.htm">33</a>And when they came<MG2064> to a place<MG5117> called<MG3004> Golgotha<MG1115>, which<MG3739> means<MG3004> Place<MG5117> of a Skull<MG2898>, <a href="/matthew/27-34.htm">34</a>they gave<MG1325> Him wine<MG3631> mixed<MG3396> with <a href="#fn">[s]</a>bile<MG5521> to drink<MG4095>; and after tasting<MG1089> it, He was unwilling<MG3756, 2309> to drink<MG4095> it. <a href="/matthew/27-35.htm">35</a>And when they had crucified<MG4717> Him, they divided<MG1266> His garments<MG2440> among<MG1266> themselves by casting<MG906> <a href="#fn">[t]</a>lots<MG2819>. <a href="/matthew/27-36.htm">36</a>And sitting<MG2521> down<MG2521>, they began to keep<MG5083> watch<MG5083> over<MG5083> Him there<MG1563>. <a href="/matthew/27-37.htm">37</a>And above<MG1883> His head<MG2776> they put<MG2007> up<MG2007> the charge<MG156> against<MG156> Him <a href="#fn">[u]</a>which read<MG1125>, “THIS<MG3778> IS JESUS<MG2424> THE KING<MG935> OF THE JEWS<MG2453>.” <a href="/matthew/27-38.htm">38</a>At<MG5119> that<MG5119> time<MG5119> two<MG1417> <a href="#fn">[v]</a>rebels<MG3027> *were being crucified<MG4717> with Him, one<MG1520> on the right<MG1188> and one<MG1520> on the left<MG2176>. <a href="/matthew/27-39.htm">39</a>And those<MG3588> passing<MG3899> by were <a href="#fn">[w]</a>speaking<MG987> abusively<MG987> to Him, shaking<MG2795> their heads<MG2776>, <a href="/matthew/27-40.htm">40</a>and saying<MG3004>, “You who are going to destroy<MG2647> the temple<MG3485> and rebuild<MG3618> it in three<MG5140> days<MG2250>, save<MG4982> Yourself<MG4572>! If<MG1487> You are the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>, come<MG2597> down<MG2597> from the cross<MG4716>.” <a href="/matthew/27-41.htm">41</a>In the same<MG3668> way<MG3668> the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> also<MG2532>, along with the scribes<MG1122> and elders<MG4245>, were mocking<MG1702> Him and saying<MG3004>, <a href="/matthew/27-42.htm">42</a>“He saved<MG4982> others<MG243>; <a href="#fn">[x]</a>He cannot<MG1410, 3756> save<MG4982> Himself<MG1438>! He is the King<MG935> of Israel<MG2474>; let Him now<MG3568> come<MG2597> down<MG2597> from the cross<MG4716>, and we will believe<MG4100> in Him. <a href="/matthew/27-43.htm">43</a>HE HAS TRUSTED<MG3982> IN GOD<MG2316>; LET GOD<MG2316> RESCUE<MG4506> Him now<MG3568>, IF<MG1487> HE <a href="#fn">[y]</a>TAKES<MG2309> PLEASURE<MG2309> IN HIM; for He said<MG3004>, ‘I am<MG1510> the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>.’” <a href="/matthew/27-44.htm">44</a>And the <a href="#fn">[z]</a>rebels<MG3027> who had been crucified<MG4957> with Him were also<MG2532> insulting<MG3679> Him in the same<MG846> way. <a href="/matthew/27-45.htm">45</a>Now<MG1161> from the <a href="#fn">[aa]</a>sixth<MG1623> hour<MG5610> darkness<MG4655> <a href="#fn">[ab]</a>fell<MG1096> upon all<MG3956> the land<MG1093> until<MG2193> the <a href="#fn">[ac]</a>ninth<MG1729a> hour<MG5610>. <a href="/matthew/27-46.htm">46</a>And about<MG4012> the ninth<MG1729a> hour<MG5610> Jesus<MG2424> cried<MG310> out<MG310> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, saying<MG3004>, “ELI<MG2241>, ELI<MG2241>, LEMA<MG2982> SABAKTANEI<MG4518>?” that is, “MY GOD<MG2316>, MY GOD<MG2316>, WHY<MG2444> HAVE YOU FORSAKEN<MG1459> ME?” <a href="/matthew/27-47.htm">47</a>And some<MG5100> of those<MG3588> who were standing<MG2476> there<MG1563>, when they heard<MG191> it, said<MG3004>, “This<MG3778> man<MG3778> is calling<MG5455> for Elijah<MG2243>.” <a href="/matthew/27-48.htm">48</a>And immediately<MG2112> one<MG1520> of them ran<MG5143>, and taking<MG2983> a sponge<MG4699>, he filled<MG4092a> it with sour<MG3690> wine<MG3690> and put<MG4060> it on a reed<MG2563>, and gave<MG4222> Him a<MG4222> drink<MG4222>. <a href="/matthew/27-49.htm">49</a>But the rest<MG3062> of them said<MG3004>, “<a href="#fn">[ad]</a>Let<MG863> us see<MG3708> if<MG1487> Elijah<MG2243> comes<MG2064> to save<MG4982> Him<a href="#fn">[ae]</a>.” <a href="/matthew/27-50.htm">50</a>And Jesus<MG2424> cried<MG2896> out<MG2896> again<MG3825> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG5456>, and gave<MG863> up<MG863> His spirit<MG4151>. <a href="/matthew/27-51.htm">51</a>And behold<MG2400>, the <a href="#fn">[af]</a>veil<MG2665> of the temple<MG3485> was torn<MG4977> in two<MG1417> from top<MG509> to bottom<MG2736>; and the earth<MG1093> shook<MG4579> and the rocks<MG4073> were split<MG4977>. <a href="/matthew/27-52.htm">52</a>Also<MG2532> the tombs<MG3419> were opened<MG455>, and many<MG4183> bodies<MG4983> of the <a href="#fn">[ag]</a>saints<MG40> who had fallen<MG2837> asleep<MG2837> were raised<MG1453>; <a href="/matthew/27-53.htm">53</a>and coming<MG1831> out<MG1831> of the tombs<MG3419> after<MG3326> His resurrection<MG1454>, they entered<MG1525> the holy<MG40> city<MG4172> and appeared<MG1718> to many<MG4183>. <a href="/matthew/27-54.htm">54</a>Now<MG1161> as for the centurion<MG1543> and those<MG3588> who were with him keeping<MG5083> guard<MG5083> over<MG5083> Jesus<MG2424>, when they saw<MG3708> the earthquake<MG4578> and the other things that were happening<MG1096>, they became<MG5399> extremely<MG4970> frightened<MG5399> and said<MG3004>, “Truly<MG230> this<MG3778> was <a href="#fn">[ah]</a>the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>!” <a href="/matthew/27-55.htm">55</a>And many<MG4183> women<MG1135> were there<MG1563> watching<MG2334> from a distance<MG3113>, who<MG3748> had followed<MG190> Jesus<MG2424> from Galilee<MG1056> while caring<MG1247> for<MG1247> Him. <a href="/matthew/27-56.htm">56</a>Among<MG1722> them were Mary<MG3137> Magdalene<MG3094>, Mary<MG3137> the mother<MG3384> of James<MG2385> and Joseph<MG2501>, and the mother<MG3384> of the sons<MG5207> of Zebedee<MG2199>. Jesus Is Buried<a href="/matthew/27-57.htm">57</a>Now<MG1161> when it was evening<MG3798>, a rich<MG4145> man<MG444> from Arimathea<MG707> came<MG2064>, named<MG5122> Joseph<MG2501>, who<MG3739> himself<MG846> had also<MG2532> become<MG3100> a<MG3100> disciple<MG3100> of Jesus<MG2424>. <a href="/matthew/27-58.htm">58</a>This<MG3778> man<MG3778> went<MG4334> to Pilate<MG4091> and asked<MG154> for the body<MG4983> of Jesus<MG2424>. Then<MG5119> Pilate<MG4091> ordered<MG2753> it to be given<MG591> to him. <a href="/matthew/27-59.htm">59</a>And Joseph<MG2501> took<MG2983> the body<MG4983> and wrapped<MG1794> it in a clean<MG2513> linen<MG4616> cloth<MG4616>, <a href="/matthew/27-60.htm">60</a>and laid<MG5087> it in his own new<MG2537> tomb<MG3419>, which<MG3739> he had cut<MG2998> out<MG2998> in the rock<MG4073>; and he rolled<MG4351> a large<MG3173> stone<MG3037> against the entrance<MG2374> of the tomb<MG3419> and went<MG565> away<MG565>. <a href="/matthew/27-61.htm">61</a>And Mary<MG3137> Magdalene<MG3094> was there<MG1563>, and the other<MG243> Mary<MG3137>, sitting<MG2521> opposite<MG561> the tomb<MG5028>. <a href="/matthew/27-62.htm">62</a>Now<MG1161> on the next<MG1887> day<MG1887>, that is, the day which<MG3748> is after<MG3326> the preparation<MG3904>, the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the Pharisees<MG5330> gathered<MG4863> together<MG4863> with Pilate<MG4091>, <a href="/matthew/27-63.htm">63</a>and they said<MG3004>, “Sir<MG2962>, we remember<MG3403> that when that deceiver<MG4108> was<MG2198> still<MG2089> alive<MG2198>, He said<MG3004>, ‘After<MG3326> three<MG5140> days<MG2250> I am rising<MG1453>.’ <a href="/matthew/27-64.htm">64</a>Therefore<MG3767>, give<MG2753> orders<MG2753> for the tomb<MG5028> to be made<MG805> secure<MG805> until<MG2193> the third<MG5154> day<MG2250>; otherwise<MG3379>, His disciples<MG3101> may come<MG2064> and steal<MG2813> Him, and say<MG3004> to the people<MG2992>, ‘He has risen<MG1453> from the dead<MG3498>,’ and the last<MG2078> deception<MG4106> will be worse<MG5501> than the first<MG4413>.” <a href="/matthew/27-65.htm">65</a>Pilate<MG4091> said<MG5346> to them, “You have<MG2192> a guard<MG2892>; go<MG5217>, make<MG805> it as secure<MG805> as you know<MG3609a> how<MG3609a>.” <a href="/matthew/27-66.htm">66</a>And they went<MG4198> and made<MG805> the tomb<MG5028> secure<MG805> with the guard<MG2892>, sealing<MG4972> the stone<MG3037>.<A name="fn"></a> [a] 3 Or silver shekels [b] 7 Lit from them [c] 9 Or I took; cf.
