Designed as a University-owned residential apartment building, it consists of 225 two-bedroom apartments, 1 three-bedroom apartment, and associated support spaces.</p> <p>The complex is composed of two L-shaped wings, one of nine stories and the other of seven. Berkeley's historic 86 year old stadium. The work includes stadium, athletic field, seismic, life safety, and program upgrades; and the preservation of selected historic elements of the original structure.<br/><br/>Site preparation activity is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2010 with utilities work, reinforcement of the west wall and limited demolition of interior spaces. The 460,000 sq ft steel structure will consist of two levels below grade and eight levels above grade including a mechanical penthouse. The hospital will feature a 40,000 sq ft emergency room, a 20,000 sq ft radiology department, and units providing Intensive Care, Critical Care, Neonatal Intensive Care, and Forensic services. Other service areas will include Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Sterile Processing, Pharmacy, Laboratory, Pulmonary Function, Biomedical, Morgue and Autopsy.</p> <p class="Pa0">Successfully integrating the site utilities was a significant challenge. The campus has been in continuous operation since 1872, so there were multiple existing buildings and many site unknowns. The collaborative use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with the core subcontractors allowed the team to evaluate vari&shy;ous alternatives for routing the active steam lines, I.T. conduits, 12 Kv electrical power, and sewer connections. This project for the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) will help increase water supply and stabilize service pressure in the southwestern portion of the Colorados Pressure Zone which includes Lafayette.</p> <p>40 feet in height, the structure is located in a residential area and nearly occupies the entire site. The project also includes two roof top terraces.&nbsp;</p> <p>The skin of the building is a combination of precast&nbsp;elements and curtainwall windows. The project is located at the corner of Howard and Hawthorne Streets in the SOMA district of San Francisco.</p> <p>Due to&nbsp;the project site's&nbsp;limited footprint, Webcor suggested the use of&nbsp;a corkscrew ramp design instead of a car elevator system for the parking garage. The school also includes an administration building containing offices, a teachers&rsquo; lounge, a library and a multi-purpose room. The project site features architectural concrete, three rubberized playfields and a syn&shy;thetic turf athletic field with an organic infill made of cork and coconut fiber.</p> <p>This scope of work included the complete demolition of the existing facility and the relocation of portable classrooms to keep a portion of the school campus op&shy;erational during the construction.
