Pilate said to them, take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>the Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he pretended to be the son of God.<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Pilate upon hearing that, was still more apprehensive. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and went again into the Pretorium, and said to Jesus, who was your father? but Jesus gave him no answer. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>then said Pilate to him, won't you give me an answer? don't you know that it is in my power to crucify you, or to release you? <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Jesus answered, you could not have any power over me, except you deriv'd it from above: therefore they who delivered me into your hands are the most culpable. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>upon this, Pilate propos'd to release him: but the Jews cried out, if you let this man go, you are not Cesar's friend: he that sets up for king, opposes Cesar.<p> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Pilate therefore hearing them talk at this rate, order'd Jesus to be brought forth, and then sat down in a place of Mosaic work on his tribunal, in Syriac call'd Gabbatha. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>it was then about the sixth hour of the day before the sabbath of the passover: and he said to the Jews, behold your king. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>but they cried out, away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king? the chief priests answered, we have no king but Cesar.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#32">Matthew 27:32&#8211;44</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#21">Mark 15:21&#8211;32</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#26">Luke 23:26&#8211;43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>upon which he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took Jesus and led him away.<p> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>and he bearing his cross, marched out to a place called the skull, which is in the Syriac, Golgotha: where they crucified him, <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>and two others with him, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and Pilate caused an inscription to be put over the cross, in these words, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>now this inscription was read by many of the Jews: for Jesus was crucified nigh the city: and it was written in Syriac, Greek, and Latin. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>thereupon the chief priests of the Jews went to Pilate, saying, don't write, "The king of the Jews;" but that he said, I am king of the Jews. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Pilate answered, what I have writ, I have writ.<p> <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The soldiers, after they had crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, to every soldier a part) and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>In the mean time the mother of Jesus, and her sister Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene, were standing by the cross. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>when Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, woman, behold thy son. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>then he said to the disciple, behold thy mother, and from that time the disciple took her to his own home.<p> <A name="29"></a><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#45">Matthew 27:45&#8211;56</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#33">Mark 15:33&#8211;41</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#44">Luke 23:44&#8211;49</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon a stick of hyssop, and held it to his mouth. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd.<p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus&#8217; Side Is Pierced<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Now for fear the bodies should remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, for it was then the eve of the pascal-sabbath, a day of high solemnity, the Jews desired Pilate that their legs might be broke, and that they might be taken away. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>accordingly the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>then they came to Jesus, and finding that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and immediately blood and water issued out. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>he that relates this, was an eye-witness of it, and his relation is true: and he is so assured, what he says is true, that you may rely upon it. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken." <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>and again the scripture saith elsewhere, "they shall look on him whom they pierced."<p> <A name="39"></a><p class="hdg">The Burial of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#57">Matthew 27:57&#8211;61</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#42">Mark 15:42&#8211;47</a>; <a href ="../luke/23.htm#50">Luke 23:50&#8211;56</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>after this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a conceal'd one, pray'd Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave: so he went and took the body of Jesus. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Nicodemus, who formerly went to Jesus by night, came likewise and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>they took therefore the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, according to the manner of burial among the Jews. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/19-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>now near the place where he was crucified, there was a garden;
