These include the glaciated coastal archipelagoes of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Argentina" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Argentina</a> and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Chile" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Chile</a>. The <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Falkland-Islands" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Falkland (Malvinas) Islands</a> are east of southern Argentina. To the north, the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/West-Indies-island-group-Atlantic-Ocean" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">West Indies</a> stretch from Trinidad to Florida, but those islands usually are associated with North America. Of the remainder, most are small oceanic islands off the coasts of South America, including the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Galapagos-Islands" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Galapagos Islands</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Ecuador" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Ecuador</a>, in the Pacific Ocean.</p><!--[MOD3]--><span class="marker MOD3 mod-inline"></span><!--[PREMOD4]--><span class="marker PREMOD4 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">South America has a total area of about 6,878,000 square miles (17,814,000 square km), or roughly one-eighth of the land surface of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Earth" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Earth</a>. Its greatest north-south extent is about 4,700 miles, from <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Point-Gallinas" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Point Gallinas</a>, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Colombia" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Colombia</a>, to Cape Horn, while its greatest east-west extent is some 3,300 miles, from <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Cape-Branco" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Cape Branco</a>, Brazil, to Point Pariñas, <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Peru" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Peru</a>. At 22,831 feet (6,959 metres) above <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/sea-level" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">sea level</a>, <span id="ref470529"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Mount-Aconcagua" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Mount Aconcagua</a>, in Argentina, near the border with Chile, is not only the continent’s highest point but also the highest elevation in the Western Hemisphere. The <span id="ref470530"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Valdes-Peninsula" class="md-crosslink ">Valdés Peninsula</a>, on the southeastern coast of Argentina, includes the lowest point, at 131 feet (40 metres) below sea level. The term America originally was applied only to South America, but the <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="designation" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/designation" data-type="MW">designation</a> soon was applied to the entire landmass. In the larger, eastern portion are found a number of stable shields forming highland regions, separated by large basins (including the vast <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Amazon-River" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Amazon</a> basin). The western portion is occupied almost entirely by the <span id="ref470533"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Andes-Mountains" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Andes Mountains</a>. The Andes—formed as the South American Plate drifted westward and forced the oceanic plate to the west under it—constitute a gigantic backbone along the entire Pacific coast of the continent. The basins east of the Andes and between the eastern highlands have been filled with large quantities of sediment washed down by the continent’s great rivers and their tributaries.</p><!--[MOD6]--><span class="marker MOD6 mod-inline"></span><!--[PREMOD7]--><span class="marker PREMOD7 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">No other continent—except Antarctica—penetrates so far to the south. Although the northern part of South America extends north of the Equator and four-fifths of its landmass is located within the tropics, it also reaches subantarctic latitudes. Few of these peoples, however, survived the arrival of Europeans after 1500, most <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="succumbing" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/succumbing" data-type="MW">succumbing</a> to disease or mixing with people of European and (especially in Brazil) African origin. Some parts of the continent are now industrialized, with modern cities, but the people in rural areas still follow an agricultural way of life. The wealth of mineral products and renewable resources is considerable, yet economic development in most of the continent lags behind the more industrially advanced regions of the world.
