She first sketches out Christophe’s sensational life story—born in Grenada, he went from a radical in search of a revolution (fighting briefly in the American one) to a commander of Haiti’s revolutionary forces who crowned himself king—then pokes holes in the myth. Often presented as a cautionary example of revolutionaries’ penchant for turning into dictators, Christophe instead emerges in Daut’s telling as a complex figure in a world gripped by radical transformation. The dramatic hook of her narrative is Christophe’s 1802 defection, when he was briefly wooed by Napoleon’s promise that Haiti would be spared from reenslavement if it rejoined the empire. Because of Christophe’s lapse (“a single bad decision, ricocheting like scattershot,” Daut calls it), France was able to pursue a “war of extermination,” committing atrocities on a scale “it might be hard for the modern reader to contemplate.” The violence, however, reunified the revolutionaries, hardening their resolve. Moreover, according to Daut, as much as Christophe’s kinghood was a betrayal of the revolution’s principles, it was also a safeguard of independence in an era of revanchist monarchy; by facing down the restored Bourbon monarch king-to-king, Christophe proved that Haitians were not “playthings.” The result is an expertly told and richly detailed reexamination of the revolutionary period. <em>(Jan.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9780593316160">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275486" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> The Social Paradox: Autonomy, Connection, and Why We Need Both to Find Happiness </cite> <h4> William von Hippel. Social scientist von Hippel (<em>The Social Leap</em>) argues that for the first time in human history, society has shifted toward autonomy and away from sociability, with mass urbanization since the 19th century fraying communal ties and marriage becoming increasingly important culturally while simultaneously eroding the value placed on relationships with friends and family. This shift has created what von Hippel describes as “sad success stories”: people who are unable to share their achievements with loved ones and are therefore dissatisfied despite being far more materially well-off than their ancestors. Von Hippel’s commonsense solutions include socializing at work, participating in run clubs and other organizations that strengthen one’s lifestyle goals, or catching up with friends or relatives via social media. Most intriguing are his explorations of the sometimes counterintuitive links between autonomy and connection, as when he notes that the pursuit of personal improvement ensured that “our ancestors became valuable to their groups” (for example, becoming a skilled hunter would have made one both socially valuable and an attractive mate). This persuades. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9780063319257">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275485" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Eternal Flame: The Authorized Biography of the Bangles </cite> <h4> Jennifer Otter Bickerdike. Sisters Debbi and Vicki Peterson grew up in a music-loving home in 1960s California, where they became obsessed with the Beatles and other rock bands. They linked up with guitar player Susanna Hoffs to form the Bangles in 1980—bass player Annette Zilinskas joined in 1981—and produced their first single independently, shopping it around to record stores until it got local airplay. Chronicling the band’s rise to fame with songs like 1986’s “Walk Like an Egyptian,” Bickerdike highlights the condescension and sexism they faced along the way—roadies unplugged their instruments mid-show, rumors circulated that they hadn’t written their lyrics, and reviewers constantly pitted them against the Go-Gos, another all-female band. At the same time, the outsize media attention attracted by Hoffs—who was widely considered the “petite,” pretty one and asked to pose solo on magazine covers— amplified tensions within the group and helped spur their 1989 breakup (though they went on to reunite in the late 1990s). While making a solid case for the band’s role in paving the way for other female rockers, Bickerdike’s beat-by-beat narration buries any hint of drama beneath dry detail (including anecdotes about the nuns at the Petersons’ Catholic elementary school). Only the most ardent Bangles fans need apply. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9780306833342">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275484" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> American Mother: A Life Reclaimed </cite> <h4> Colum McCann and Diane Foley. The narrative progresses from Foley’s excruciating days in limbo after Jim went missing from Syria in 2012 to the horrors of his internet beheading in 2014 and Foley’s subsequent founding of a nonprofit dedicated to securing American journalists’ safety abroad. Woven throughout are accounts of chilling face-to-face meetings with one of her son’s killers, who agreed to meet the families of victims while awaiting sentencing in Virginia; sections that detail the fates of other Westerners kidnapped by ISIS; and passages that illuminate the dangers faced by conflict journalists today. Most moving, however, is McCann and Foley’s portrait of Jim, whose tenacity and dedication to journalism led to him being taken hostage more than once while covering conflicts in the Middle East. Readers will be moved by this bracing chronicle of Foley’s commitment to honoring her son’s legacy. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781639735679">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275483" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> The Success Myth: Letting Go of Having It All </cite> <h4> Emma Gannon. Novelist Gannon (<em>Disconnected</em>) contends that an image-obsessed, materialistic culture has set readers on an endless race to success without a finish line, eroding their self-esteem, relationships, and mental stability in the process. Gannon calls on readers to revise their definition of success by following their intuition even when it cuts against other people’s expectations, and to simply enjoy life in the moment. Her advice includes abandoning an obsession with productivity; managing negative emotions through self-talk and other strategies; celebrating small moments of joy; and pursuing process-oriented rather than results-oriented goals (instead of deciding to publish a book, decide to write every morning). Gannon’s points about the damaging nature of today’s fast-paced, tech-driven lifestyle are solid but hardly groundbreaking, and truisms like “there is no such thing as a ‘wrong’ path because all of life’s moments have the potential to teach us something” can feel pat. This fails to stand out from the rising tide of guides to living more serenely in a hectic world. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781804990766">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275421" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> <img src="/images/star3.gif" width=16 height=20 border=0 style="vertical-align:top;"> Seeking Shelter: A Working Mother, Her Children, and a Story of Homelessness in America </cite> <h4> Jeff Hobbs. Hobbs (<em>The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace</em>) profiles “Evelyn,” a mother of five who moved her family from Lancaster, Calif., to Los Angeles in 2018 for the city’s well-regarded public schools, planning to use Section 8 housing vouchers to make rent and unaware of the program’s yearslong waitlist. Finding only a low-paying waitressing job and going through a final break with her abusive husband, Evelyn and her children end up in a series of ever more precarious housing situations—a motel, an unfinished garage for $100 a week, and then motels again through an emergency one-night motel voucher program (the unreliability of which leaves the family spending many nights in Evelyn’s SUV). They eventually find stable, long-term housing at a shelter, allowing Evelyn to save up and retrain as an accountant. However, after the family moves into a subsidized townhouse, an expensive setback—paying legal fees when one of her sons is arrested for shoplifting—leads to yet another eviction. In evocative vignettes, Hobbs paints Evelyn as an exemplary mother and worker navigating a bureaucracy seemingly designed to make her fail—for instance, she has trouble finding a second job because she has to be on the phone at exactly 5:01 p.m. every night to get a motel voucher. It’s an eye-opening look at how the housing crisis extends far beyond what’s visible on the streets. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781668034828">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275420" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> The Cost of Fear: Why Most Safety Advice Is Sexist and How We Can Stop Gender-Based Violence </cite> <h4> Meg Stone. Contrary to the notion that a woman ought not to fight back against an attacker for the sake of her own physical safety, Stone cites research showing that “women who physically or verbally fight back are less likely to experience rape” and “fighting back does not increase a person’s chances of serious injury.” Stone attributes such a widespread misperception to the dominance of “compliance culture,” which convinces women and girls that if they follow enough rules they will be safe. In Stone’s dire assessment, such advice begins with things like avoiding walking alone at night and ends with going along with one’s own rape. Stone pulls together a lot of ancillary cultural analysis to make her theory cohere—she describes how getting middle school girls to make any sound of protest during a self-defense training is nearly impossible because they feel such shame over shouting, and also notes how the worst cases of sexual abuse happen in institutional settings (churches, sports teams) where there is high value placed on compliance. This is sure to stir debate. <em>(Feb.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9780807016220">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275419" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> <img src="/images/star3.gif" width=16 height=20 border=0 style="vertical-align:top;"> My Country, Africa: Autobiography of the Black Pasionaria </cite> <h4> Andrée Blouin, with Jean Mackellar. The author was born in 1921 in what is today known as the Central African Republic to an African teenager and a French businessman, and raised in a home for abandoned biracial children. She details years of abuse meted out by nuns who ran the home, and describes how racism plagued her intimate relationships with white men. But it wasn’t until the 1946 death of her two-year-old son, who was denied malaria drugs because he was one-quarter African, that Blouin spoke out publicly against racism. She made her first foray into revolutionary politics in Guinea, where a chance encounter with Congolese leaders fighting Belgian rule thrust her into the center of Africa’s mid-20th-century independence movements. Blouin gives a thrilling account of the revolutionary fervor that swept the continent and its crucial interplay with gender politics: “I saw that one could not separate the problem of the African continent’s resources from the problems of African women,” she writes, arguing that women needed to be “freed from [their] role of servitude” and join together with men in the name of independence. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of race, gender, and freedom. <em>(Jan.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9781839768712">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275418" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Poor Artists: A Quest Into the Art World </cite> <h4> Gabrielle de la Puente and Zarina Muhammad. Taking the form of a novel, the story follows Quest Talukdar, a British South Asian artist who’s finally found some traction by making bizarre pieces that she hates, but knows will sell (for example, a plaster cast of rotting fruit). Quest has trippy conversations with “a pile of leftover art” that serves as the head of an art university, psychologist Abraham Maslow, creator of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (“If an artist is not able to make art... we can expect discontent and restlessness in the individual”), and 19th-century French painter Gustave Courbet (recast here as an Uber driver). All the while, Quest struggles to create meaningful work without being overwhelmed by the harsh economic realities of the art world—exorbitantly priced studio spaces, scarce funding opportunities, and competition with rich kids who can pay their way into galleries. Quest’s recognition of the absurdity of her situation (an ex boyfriend accuses her of being “married to the idea that being an artist is a job”) is accompanied by her dawning realization that creativity necessarily defies logic (“Art is lawless,” a friend tells her, “and it has to remain so in order to open up new channels of understanding”). The result is a sharp and original take on the privilege and passion of the modern creative economy. <em>(Nov.)</em> <p> <review-date>Reviewed on 12/13/2024 | </review-date> <a href="/9783791380216">Details & Permalink</a> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="more-less full-width-heading" data-jsclass="responsiveWrapper" data-responsive-scales="small" data-follow="#wrapper" data-constrain="width" data-row="275405" onclick="revealReview(this);"><ml>show more</ml></div> <div class="full-width-heading-placeholder"> </div> </div> <div class="cateogry-reviews-separator"> </div> <div class="category-reviews-item"> <cite> Woody Allen: A Travesty of a Mockery of a Sham </cite> <h4> Patrick McGilligan. Growing up in Brooklyn, Allen became a paid joke writer for a <em>New York Post</em> gossip columnist while still in his teens, and by the 1950s he was writing for numerous TV variety programs. Unsatisfied with the small screen, Allen turned to stand-up comedy before pivoting to filmmaking with 1966’s <em>What’s Up, Tiger Lily?</em> Thoroughly covering the making of all 50 of Allen’s films, McGilligan details how “misbehaving robots [and] malfunctioning props” plagued the shoot for <em>Sleeper</em>, and how an unpublished murder mystery novel Allen wrote while filming <em>Love and Death</em> in Paris transformed into <em>Annie Hall</em>. McGilligan devotes a considerable portion of the book to relitigating the 1992 implosion of Allen’s relationship with Mia Farrow after he began an affair with her 21-year-old adopted daughter from a previous marriage, Soon-Yi Previn, as well as the sexual abuse allegations made against him soon afterward by his adopted daughter with Farrow, Dylan. McGilligan’s repeated invocation of McCarthyism to describe the inquest into Allen’s alleged abuse raises serious questions over whether readers should trust the impartiality of his account, casting a pall over even the robust recounting of Allen’s prior life and career. This is more interested in defending Allen than allowing readers to draw their own conclusions. <em>Agent: Gloria Loomis, Watkins/Loomis.
