His design, however, was substantially altered before construction, and the enormous obelisk was not completed until decades after his death. As a young man Mills apprenticed under <a href="/people/633/000204021/">James Hoban</a>, and helped build the White House. He was befriended by <a href="/people/909/000031816/">Thomas Jefferson</a>, and early in his career he was employed by famed architect <a href="/people/815/000084563/">Benjamin Latrobe</a>. Mills' other famous structures include a completely different Washington Monument in Baltimore, Philadelphia's Sansom Street Church (the first US church with a domed roof), the State Hospital for the Insane in Columbia, SC, and, in DC, the International Trade Commission, the Patent Office, and the Treasury Building.
