His design, however, was substantially altered before construction, and the enormous obelisk was not completed until decades after his death. As a young man Mills apprenticed under James Hoban, and helped build the White House. He was befriended by Thomas Jefferson, and early in his career he was employed by famed architect Benjamin Latrobe. Mills' other famous structures include a completely different Washington Monument in Baltimore, Philadelphia's Sansom Street Church (the first US church with a domed roof), the State Hospital for the Insane in Columbia, SC, and, in DC, the International Trade Commission, the Patent Office, and the Treasury Building.
Father: William Mills
Mother: Ann Taylor Mills
Brother: Andrew Mills
Brother: Henry Mills
Brother: Thomas Mills
Wife: Eliza Barnwell Smith Mills (b. 10-Feb-1784, m. 15-Oct-1808, d. 1865, four daughters, one adopted son)
Son: James Mills (adopted, b.
