Coey, FRS, is awarded the Prestigious Max Born Medal and Prize</h2> <p>13 Mar 2019</p> <p>The School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin, congratulates Mike Coey on the Max Born Medal and Prize. This is a prestigious award by the Institute of Physics and the German Physical Society (DPG) made on alternate years to a physicist working either in Germany or in Great Britain or Ireland. The 2019 medal was presented at a ceremony during the DRG Spring Meeting in Rostock, Germany on Monday, 10 March.</p> <p>The citation was “for the understanding and description of the magnetic properties of novel magnetic materials, including amorphous alloys, magnetic oxides, half-metals and hard magnetic materials, and for pioneering their use in devices.“</p> <p>The DPG noted that Mike Coey has made seminal contributions to the physics of magnetic materials across an extraordinarily wide range of materials. It noted in particular his research on amorphous alloys, magnetic oxides and magnetic semi-metals. It highlighted too his pioneering work on the development of concrete applications of the materials and phenomena that he has discovered.</p> <p>Mike studied physics at Cambridge University and received his PhD from the University of Manitoba in Canada. After research positions in Grenoble, where he received his Diplome d’Habilitaiton, and with IBM in Yorktown, New York he joined the academic staff in Physics at Trinity College Dublin. In 1987 he was awarded an ScD from the University of Dublin and in 2007 he became the 21st Erasmus Smith’s Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the recipient of many awards and prizes. Mike is currently an Emeritus Professor in the School of Physics.</p> <p><a
