The name Jaazaniah means "Yahweh hears" or "Yahweh listens," reflecting a common theophoric element in Hebrew names that emphasizes the relationship between the individual and God.

1. Jaazaniah, Son of Hoshaiah: This Jaazaniah is mentioned in the context of the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem. He was one of the leaders of the remnant of Judah who were left in the land after the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. He is noted for his involvement in the events following the assassination of Gedaliah, the governor appointed by the Babylonians. In Jeremiah 42:1, Jaazaniah, along with Johanan son of Kareah and other leaders, approached the prophet Jeremiah to seek guidance from the Lord: "Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan son of Kareah, Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, approached." This group, however, later disobeyed the word of the Lord delivered by Jeremiah, choosing to flee to Egypt despite being warned against it.

2. Jaazaniah, Son of Shaphan: Another Jaazaniah appears in the book of Ezekiel. He is identified as a leader among the elders of Israel during the Babylonian exile. In Ezekiel 8:11, the prophet Ezekiel is shown a vision of the abominations being committed in the temple in Jerusalem, and Jaazaniah is mentioned as one of the seventy elders participating in idolatrous practices: "Before them stood seventy elders of the house of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense was rising." This vision highlights the spiritual corruption and apostasy that had infiltrated the leadership of Israel, contributing to the nation's judgment and exile.

3. Jaazaniah, Son of Azzur: In Ezekiel 11:1, another Jaazaniah is mentioned as a leader among the people of Jerusalem. He is one of the twenty-five men seen by Ezekiel at the east gate of the Lord's house, who are described as giving wicked counsel to the city: "Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the LORD that faces east, and there at the entrance of the gate I saw twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people." This Jaazaniah is part of a group that is condemned by God for their false sense of security and misleading the people, contributing to the moral and spiritual decline of Jerusalem.

The accounts of Jaazaniah in the Scriptures serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by the leaders of Israel during times of national crisis and the consequences of turning away from God's commandments. Each mention of Jaazaniah provides insight into the historical and spiritual context of the periods in which they lived, illustrating the broader themes of faithfulness, leadership, and the importance of heeding God's word.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Jaazaniah
whom the Lord will hear
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Jaazaniah
(whom Jehovah hears).

One of the captains of the forces who accompanied Hohanan ben-Kareah to pay his respects to Gedaliah at Mizpah, (2 Kings 25:23) and who appears afterwards to have assisted in recovering Ishmael's prey from his clutches.
