The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks that were distributed along the fault zone. In this study, we analyzed the seismological and geodetic data to determine the source characteristics and rupture kinematics of the earthquake. Our results suggest that the earthquake was caused by a normal faulting mechanism with a significant amount of left-lateral strike-slip component. The slip models show a simple slip distribution pattern along the strike of the fault plane. The horizontal co-seismic displacements inferred from the Global Navigation Satellite System data are consistent with the oblique slip kinematics of the rupture. Here, we aim at improving the proxy calibrations by comparing El/Ca in the outermost surface of the calcareous skeletons of live-collected bamboo corals from the South China Sea (SCS) with modern environmental records. We find that the ratios of magnesium and barium to calcium (Mg/Ca and Ba/Ca) can be expressed as a function of ambient seawater temperature and silicate concentration, respectively. The study found that the Miocene Maguan alkali basalts can be divided into two types based on petrographic and geochemical characteristics, which have similar Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic signatures, but different Mo isotopic compositions. Type I basalts have a wide range of δ98/95Mo, while type II basalts have heavy and constant δ98/95Mo values. The study suggests that type I basalts may originate from an enriched asthenospheric mantle metasomatized by melts from recycled dehydrated oceanic crust and sediments, while type II basalts are derived from partial melting of an enriched asthenospheric mantle metasomatized by melts from recycled serpentinized peridotites. Residual Tethys oceanic slabs in the deep mantle significantly contribute to the mantle source of the Maguan basalts. The characteristics of these pyroclasts can be used to infer the energetics of magma fragmentation and the associated eruption style and intensity. However, some of these pyroclasts may be generated through impact mechanisms and subsequent secondary fragmentation when they are still in the molten state. Here, we apply and scale the concepts of liquid droplet impacts from engineering to magma fragmentation processes in volcanology. We compiled and modeled physical data for two mafic melt compositions (kimberlite and basalt) and used specific eruption examples from Igwisi Hills, Kilauea, and Stromboli volcanoes to define composition-specific impact dynamics. The impact dynamics of pyroclasts directly control in-conduit processes, eruption dynamics, and ash dispersal. For low-viscosity mafic melts such as kimberlite and basalt, pyroclast impacts can result in either splash or deposition on the conduit wall, leading to conduit clearing or narrowing, respectively. In both cases, a shift in the impact regime towards surface deposition will lead to an inevitable decay in explosiveness, potentially switching the eruption style to effusive behavior. This has direct implications for the transport of volcanic ash at the surface and the interpretation of magma fragmentation processes (e.g., energies) from the depositional record. </div> </div> <div class="d-flex justify-content-between"> <p class="font-weight-bold"> <span class="text-primary">GEOCHEMISTRY GEOPHYSICS GEOSYSTEMS</span> (2024) </p> <div class="flex-shrink-0"> <a class="btn btn-outline-primary btn-sm" href="https://www.peeref.com/works/84005807/add-to-collection" target="_blank"> <strong>Add to Collection</strong> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="my-4 "> <div> <span class="d-inline-block badge badge-blue"> Article </span> <span class="d-inline-block badge badge-cyan"> Geochemistry & Geophysics </span> </div> <h4> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/works/83598782" class="text-dark hover-underline">Cenozoic Volcanic Provinces and Shallow Asthenospheric Volumes in the Circum-Mediterranean: Evidence From Magmatic Geochemistry, Seismic Tomography, and Integrated Geophysical-Petrological Thermochemical Inversion</a> </h4> <p class="text-ellipsis-2">A. The study also shows that the formation of SAVs is related to slab rollback, back-arc extension, or thermal upwelling, and some are coupled with continental rifting. </div> </div> <div class="d-flex justify-content-between"> <p class="font-weight-bold"> <span class="text-primary">GEOCHEMISTRY GEOPHYSICS GEOSYSTEMS</span> (2024) </p> <div class="flex-shrink-0"> <a class="btn btn-outline-primary btn-sm" href="https://www.peeref.com/works/83598782/add-to-collection" target="_blank"> <strong>Add to Collection</strong> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="modal fade" id="share-journal" tabindex="-1"> <div class="modal-dialog"> <div class="modal-content"> <div class="modal-header"> <button type="button" class="close" data-dismiss="modal"><span>×</span></button> <h4 class="modal-title">Share Journal <b class="text-primary"></b></h4> </div> <div class="modal-body"> <div class="my-4"> <div class="social-share"> <a class="social-share-item email" href="mailto:?subject=GEOCHEMISTRY GEOPHYSICS GEOSYSTEMS&body=https://www.peeref.com/journals/3042/geochemistry-geophysics-geosystems" target="_blank"> <img src="https://peeref-open.s3.amazonaws.com/images/social-share-email.svg" height="16"> </a> <a class="social-share-item linkedin" href="https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle/?url=https://www.peeref.com/journals/3042/geochemistry-geophysics-geosystems" target="_blank"> <img src="https://peeref-open.s3.amazonaws.com/images/social-share-linkedin.svg" height="16"> </a> <a class="social-share-item twitter" href="https://twitter.com/share?url=https://www.peeref.com/journals/3042/geochemistry-geophysics-geosystems" target="_blank"> <img src="https://peeref-open.s3.amazonaws.com/images/social-share-twitter.svg" height="16"> </a> <a class="social-share-item wechat" href="javascipt:;" onclick="window.open('https://api.qrserver.com/v1/create-qr-code/?size=154x154&data=https://www.peeref.com/journals/3042/geochemistry-geophysics-geosystems', 'newwindow', 'height=300, width=300')"> <img src="https://peeref-open.s3.amazonaws.com/images/social-share-wechat.svg" height="16"> </a> <a class="social-share-item facebook" href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://www.peeref.com/journals/3042/geochemistry-geophysics-geosystems" target="_blank"> <img src="https://peeref-open.s3.amazonaws.com/images/social-share-facebook.svg" height="16"> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <back-top-button></back-top-button> </main> <div class="container"> <div class="footer"> <div class="col-md-10"> <div class="d-flex flex-wrap" style="font-size: 15px;"> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/works" class="mx-3 px-2"> Papers </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/posters" class="mx-3 px-2"> Posters </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/abstracts" class="mx-3 px-2"> Abstracts </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/webinars" class="mx-3 px-2"> Webinars </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/questions" class="mx-3 px-2"> Questions </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/hubs" class="mx-3 px-2"> Hubs </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/funding" class="mx-3 px-2"> Funding </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/journals" class="mx-3 px-2"> Journals </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/connect" class="mx-3 px-2"> Connect </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/e-collections" class="mx-3 px-2"> Collections </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/reviewer" class="mx-3 px-2"> Reviewers </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/about" class="mx-3 px-2"> About Us </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/about/faq" class="mx-3 px-2"> FAQs </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/mobile-app" class="mx-3 px-2"> Mobile App </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/about/privacy" class="mx-3 px-2"> Privacy Policy </a> <a href="https://www.peeref.com/about/terms-of-use" class="mx-3 px-2"> Terms of Use </a> </div> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <div class="d-flex justify-content-end"> <div class="sns"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Peeref-113216326987528" target="_blank"> <i class="ivu-icon ivu-icon-logo-facebook"></i> </a> <a href="https://twitter.com/Peeref1" target="_blank"> <i class="ivu-icon ivu-icon-logo-twitter"></i> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="copyright"> © Peeref 2019-2025.
