Jerusalem, the capital city established by David, was the political and spiritual center of the united kingdom of Israel. Rehoboam's arrival in Jerusalem signifies his return to the seat of power after the northern tribes rejected his rule. This moment marks a pivotal point in Israel's history, as the kingdom was on the brink of division. Jerusalem's significance is further underscored by its role as the location of the Temple, the central place of worship for the Israelites.
he mobilized the house of Judah and Benjamin
The tribes of Judah and Benjamin formed the southern kingdom, known as Judah, after the division of the united monarchy. Rehoboam's mobilization of these tribes indicates his intent to assert his authority and maintain control over the kingdom. Judah, being the largest and most influential tribe, was the tribe from which David and his descendants, including Rehoboam, hailed. Benjamin, though smaller, was strategically important due to its proximity to Jerusalem. This mobilization reflects the political and military strategies of ancient Near Eastern kings who often relied on tribal alliances and loyalties.
180,000 chosen warriors
The number 180,000 suggests a significant military force, indicating the seriousness of Rehoboam's intent to reclaim the northern tribes. The term "chosen warriors" implies that these were not just ordinary soldiers but selected for their skill and valor. This reflects the common practice of assembling elite troops for critical military campaigns. The large number also highlights the potential for civil war within the nation of Israel, a conflict that would have had devastating consequences for the people and the land.
to fight against Israel
The reference to "Israel" here denotes the northern tribes that had rejected Rehoboam's rule and followed Jeroboam instead. This division resulted in the formation of two separate kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south. The conflict between Rehoboam and Jeroboam was not just a political struggle but also a spiritual one, as Jeroboam established alternative centers of worship in Bethel and Dan, leading the northern tribes away from the Temple in Jerusalem. This phrase underscores the internal strife and division that plagued the nation, fulfilling the prophecy given to Jeroboam by the prophet Ahijah (1 Kings 11:29-31).
and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam
Rehoboam's desire to restore the kingdom reflects his determination to reunite the tribes under his rule, maintaining the legacy of his father Solomon and grandfather David. This ambition, however, was contrary to God's plan, as the division was a consequence of Solomon's disobedience and idolatry (1 Kings 11:11-13). The attempt to restore the kingdom by force was ultimately thwarted by divine intervention, as God sent the prophet Shemaiah to prevent the conflict (2 Chronicles 11:2-4). This highlights the theme of divine sovereignty and the futility of human efforts that oppose God's will.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Rehoboam
The son of Solomon and king of Judah, Rehoboam's reign is marked by the division of the united kingdom of Israel into two separate kingdoms: Judah and Israel.

2. Jerusalem
The capital city of Judah, Jerusalem is the political and spiritual center for the southern kingdom and the location where Rehoboam gathers his forces.

3. House of Judah and Benjamin
These two tribes form the southern kingdom of Judah, loyal to Rehoboam, and are mobilized for war against the northern tribes of Israel.

4. 180,000 Chosen Warriors
A significant military force assembled by Rehoboam, indicating the seriousness of the conflict and his intent to reclaim the northern kingdom.

5. Israel
Refers to the northern kingdom, which had separated from Judah under the leadership of Jeroboam, following Rehoboam's harsh policies.
Teaching Points
The Consequences of Poor Leadership
Rehoboam's decision to mobilize for war reflects the consequences of his earlier unwise leadership choices. The parallel (1 Kings 12:21) says more distinctly, "The house of Judah with the tribe of Benjamin." They of Jeroboam (2 Chronicles 10:16) had flung it at Judah: "Now, David, see to thine own house." Rehoboam, of course, does this very thing. For the first time, formally, Benjamin is now introduced as throwing in its lot with Judah, and the acted prophecy of Ahijah is seen fulfilled; the chiefest of the tribes, and the tribe that came of the youngest and most petted of old Jacob's sons, are now wedded to the end. The tribe of Benjamin lay hemmed in between Ephraim, to which it had once much leaned, and to which (as Benjamin was the blood-uncle of Ephraim) it was more closely related, and Judah, with which it had once been at variance (2 Samuel 2:12-32; 2 Samuel 3:1-27; 2 Samuel 20:1). But exactly on the border-line of Judah and Benjamin rose the city Jerusalem and the temple (Joshua 15:8; Joshua 18:16; Jeremiah 20:2); and, beyond doubt, this fact had helped to bring about the much more friendly feeling, if not absolutely close union, that now for some time had existed between these two tribes in their contiguous allotments. A hundred and four-score thousand chosen men, which were warriors. According to Joab, in David's time the men able to bear arms of Judah alone were five hundred thousand (2 Samuel 24:9). Compare the numbers in the next reign (2 Chronicles 13:3), and, later on still, in Jehoshaphat's (2 Chronicles 17:14-18). Both of these show that Abijah and Jehoshaphat respectively had improved the time given to training much larger armies, whereas now Rehoboam was taken by surprise.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
When Rehoboam
רְחַבְעָם֮ (rə·ḥaḇ·‘ām)
Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 7346: Rehoboam -- 'a people are enlarged', a king of Judah

arrived
וַיָּבֹ֣א (way·yā·ḇō)
Conjunctive waw |
