The trees range from 6 to 11 feet and go for $95 to $350.</p><div class="dfp-ad dfp-cube_article" id="div-gpt-ad-cube_article" style="visibility:hidden"> <div class="htlad-cube_article" data-unit="santacruzsentinel.com/news/cube_article" data-targeting=""></div> </div><p>So why opt for a live tree?</p><p>“It”s good for nature,” said Susan Draper, a first-time renter from Carmel. “You don”t cut down a tree that will die.”</p><p>Picking a potted tree from what looks like a very neat forest can also create a sense of connection among families who rent the same tree each year, according to co-owner Roland Garcia.</p><p>“People here really care about the environment,” he said. </p><p>John Black drove from Palo Alto last weekend with his wife, father-in-law and twin 8-year-old boys to rent a tree. </p><p>The rental business offers an online system to ship and pick up the tree ($20 in the county), but Black said he wanted to experience going to a forest with his kids. </p><p>“The trees in the parking lot seemed a little too perfect,” he said. </p><p>Rent a Living Christmas Tree anticipates to financially break even for the first time this year after three years of losses, co-owner Monica Hudson said. </p><p>The owners said there were growing pains in the early years because they grew trees that were not popular and opened in a recession. </p><p>“We”ve learned the hard way,” Hudson said. </p><p>As the business continued to grow — Roland credits the Internet and convenience — it also got some big customers. </p><p>Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula has rented 17 trees for the second year and Pebble Beach Co. will rent 27 this year. </p><p>“It struck a cord,” Hudson said. </p><p>At Warren Church Christmas Tree Farm, its 83-year-old patriarch said he has seen his business decrease roughly 20 percent in the last 20 years. </p><p>Despite a small uptick in sales, Church said he thought people just did not want to get dirty or be in the woods anymore. </p><p>Alisha Cureton of Salinas said she went to Church”s farm for the experience of picking a tree with her friends. </p><p>Cureton works at CHOMP and is familiar with the living trees, but said you cannot beat the size and shape of trees in the wild or the adventure. </p><p>“There”s just something about being out here,” she said.</p><p class="taglinejb">Santa Cruz Sentinel
