<span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>An evil<MG4190> and adulterous<MG3428> generation<MG1074> wants<MG1934> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>sign<MG4592>; and <i>so</i> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>sign<MG4592> will not be given<MG1325> to it, except<MG1508> the sign<MG4592> of Jonah<MG2495>.” And He left<MG2641> them and went<MG565> away<MG565>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And the disciples<MG3101> came<MG2064> to the other<MG4008> side<MG4008> <i>of the sea,</i> but they had forgotten<MG1950> to bring<MG2983> <i>any</i> bread<MG740>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to them, “Watch<MG3708> out<MG3708> and beware<MG4337> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>leaven<MG2219> of the Pharisees<MG5330> and Sadducees<MG4523>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>They began to discuss<MG1260> <i>this</i> among<MG1722> themselves<MG1438>, saying<MG3004>, “<i>He said that</i> because<MG3754> we did not bring<MG2983> <i>any</i> bread<MG740>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424>, aware<MG1097> <i>of this,</i> said<MG3004>, “You men<MG3640b> of<MG3640b> little<MG3640b> faith<MG3640b>, why<MG5101> are you discussing<MG1260> among<MG1722> yourselves<MG1438> <i>the fact</i> that you have<MG2192> no<MG3756> bread<MG740>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Do you not yet<MG3768> understand<MG3539> nor<MG3761> remember<MG3421> the five<MG4002> loaves<MG740> of the five<MG4000> thousand<MG4000>, and how<MG4214> many<MG4214> baskets<MG2894> you picked<MG2983> up? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Nor<MG3761> the seven<MG2033> loaves<MG740> of the four<MG5070> thousand<MG5070>, and how<MG4214> many<MG4214> large<MG4711> baskets<MG4711> you picked<MG2983> up? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>How<MG4459> <i>is it that</i> you do not understand<MG3539> that I did not speak<MG3004> to you about<MG4012> bread<MG740>? But beware<MG4337> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>leaven<MG2219> of the Pharisees<MG5330> and Sadducees<MG4523>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> they understood<MG4920> that He did not say<MG3004> to beware<MG4337> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>leaven<MG2219> of bread<MG740>, but of the teaching<MG1322> of the Pharisees<MG5330> and Sadducees<MG4523>. <p class="hdg">Peter’s Confession of Christ</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Jesus<MG2424> came<MG2064> into the region<MG3313> of Caesarea<MG2542> Philippi<MG5376>, He was asking<MG2065> His disciples<MG3101>, “Who<MG5101> do people<MG444> say<MG3004> that the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> is?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And they said<MG3004>, “Some<MG3588, 3303a> <i>say</i> John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG910>; and others<MG243>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Elijah<MG2243>; and <i>still</i> others<MG2087>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Jeremiah<MG2408>, or<MG2228> one<MG1520> of the <i>other</i> prophets<MG4396>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>He *said<MG3004> to them, “But who<MG5101> do you yourselves<MG4771> say<MG3004> that I am<MG1510>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Simon<MG4613> Peter<MG4074> answered<MG611>, “You are the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>, the Son<MG5207> of the living<MG2198> God<MG2316>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to him, “Blessed<MG3107> are you, Simon<MG4613> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Barjona<MG920>, because<MG3754> flesh<MG4561> and blood<MG129> did not reveal<MG601> <i>this</i> to you, but My Father<MG3962> who<MG3588> is in heaven<MG3772>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And I also<MG2532> say<MG3004> to you that you are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Peter<MG4074>, and upon this<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>rock<MG4073> I will build<MG3618> My church<MG1577>; and the gates<MG4439> of Hades<MG86> will not overpower<MG2729> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>I will give<MG1325> you the keys<MG2807> of the kingdom<MG932> of heaven<MG3772>; and whatever<MG3739, 1437> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>bind<MG1210> on earth<MG1093> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>shall have been bound<MG1210> in heaven<MG3772>, and whatever<MG3739, 1437> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>loose<MG3089> on earth<MG1093> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>shall have been loosed<MG3089> in heaven<MG3772>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> He gave<MG2008> the disciples<MG3101> strict<MG2008> orders<MG2008> that they were to tell<MG3004> no<MG3367> one<MG3367> that He was the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Foretells His Death</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>From that<MG5119> time<MG5119> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Jesus<MG2424> began<MG757> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>point<MG1166> out<MG1166> to His disciples<MG3101> that it was necessary<MG1163> for Him to go<MG565> to Jerusalem<MG2414> and to suffer<MG3958> many<MG4183> things<MG4183> from the elders<MG4245>, chief<MG749> priests<MG749>, and scribes<MG1122>, and to be killed<MG615>, and to be raised<MG1453> up<MG1453> on the third<MG5154> day<MG2250>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And <i>yet</i> Peter<MG4074> took<MG4355> Him aside<MG4355> and began<MG757> to rebuke<MG2008> Him, saying<MG3004>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>God<MG2436> forbid<MG2436> it, Lord<MG2962>! This<MG3778> shall never<MG3756, 3361> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>happen<MG1510> to You!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But He turned<MG4762> and said<MG3004> to Peter<MG4074>, “Get<MG5217> behind<MG3694> Me, Satan<MG4567>! You are a stumbling<MG4625> block<MG4625> to Me; for you are not setting<MG5426> your mind<MG5426> on<MG5426> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>God’s<MG2316> purposes, but men’s<MG444>.” <p class="hdg">Discipleship Is Costly</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to His disciples<MG3101>, “If<MG1487> anyone<MG5100> wants<MG2309> to come<MG2064> after<MG3694> Me, he must deny<MG533> himself<MG1438>, take<MG142> up<MG142> his cross<MG4716>, and follow<MG190> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>For whoever<MG3739, 1437> wants<MG2309> to save<MG4982> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>life<MG5590> will lose<MG622> it; but whoever<MG3739, 302> loses<MG622> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>life<MG5590> for My sake<MG1752a> will find<MG2147> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/16-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>For what<MG5101> good<MG5623> will it do<MG5623> a person<MG444> if<MG1437> he gains<MG2770> the whole<MG3650> world<MG2889>, but <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>forfeits<MG2210> his soul<MG5590>?
