The heart, in Hebrew thought, is the seat of will, emotions, and intellect. Proverbs 4:23 advises, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." The psalmist's plea reflects an awareness of human vulnerability to sin and the need for divine assistance to maintain purity. This aligns with Jesus' teaching in Matthew 15:19, where He explains that evil thoughts and actions originate from the heart.
or take part in works of wickedness
The psalmist seeks to avoid participation in sinful actions, highlighting the biblical principle of separation from evil. This echoes the call for holiness found in Leviticus 20:26, where God commands His people to be holy as He is holy. The New Testament reinforces this in 2 Corinthians 6:17, urging believers to "come out from among them and be separate." The phrase underscores the active choice to reject sin and live righteously.
with men who do iniquity
The mention of "men who do iniquity" suggests the influence of ungodly associations. Psalm 1:1 warns against walking in the counsel of the wicked, standing in the way of sinners, or sitting in the company of mockers. The psalmist's concern reflects the biblical understanding that bad company corrupts good character, as stated in 1 Corinthians 15:33. This phrase serves as a reminder to choose companions wisely, as they can lead one toward or away from righteousness.
let me not feast on their delicacies
The imagery of feasting on "delicacies" symbolizes indulging in sinful pleasures. This can be seen as a metaphor for the seductive nature of sin, which often appears attractive but leads to spiritual harm. Proverbs 23:1-3 warns against being enticed by the delicacies of a ruler, which can be deceitful. The psalmist's request is a plea for strength to resist temptation and maintain spiritual integrity, reminiscent of Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6:13 to pray for deliverance from evil.
Persons / Places / Events
1. David
Traditionally attributed as the author of Psalm 141, David is a central figure in the Old Testament, known for his deep relationship with God, his psalms, and his reign as king of Israel.

2. Men who do iniquity
This phrase refers to those who engage in sinful or immoral behavior, representing the negative influences that David seeks to avoid.

3. Feasting on delicacies
This metaphorical expression suggests partaking in sinful pleasures or being enticed by the allure of wickedness.
Teaching Points
Guarding the Heart
Just as David prays for his heart not to incline toward evil, believers are called to actively guard their hearts against sinful desires and influences.

Choosing Companions Wisely
The company we keep can significantly impact our spiritual walk. Evidently the danger to be guarded against was not so much a sinful act as a sinful utterance, and the expression "to make pretexts or excuses" may possibly refer to the casuistries by which some of the laxer Jews excused their participation in heathen rites or licentious banquets. Symmachus has, "to devise wicked devices."
Dainties.--The word is peculiar to this passage, but derived from a root meaning "pleasant." The LXX. and Vulg. refer it to persons instead of things. "I will not taste of their sweets" may mean "I will not listen to their allurements: what finds favour with them shall not tempt me." On the other hand, if we retain the English allusion to the dainties of a feast (so Symmachus), the word in Psalm 141:6 will be used metaphorically in contrast. The words of condemnation he utters, though bitter to these feasters, are in reality sweet with the sweetness of truth.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 4. - Incline not my heart to any evil thing; i.e. let not my heart be inclined to any form of evil. To practice wicked works (rather, wicked practices) with men that work iniquity; and let me not eat of their dainties.
