of our selves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse. </p> <p> Human Rights Watch works for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people’s rights, with activists representing a multiplicity of identities and issues. </p> <p> We document and expose abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity worldwide – including torture, killing and executions, arrests under unjust laws, unequal treatment, censorship, medical abuses, discrimination in health and jobs and housing, domestic violence, abuses against children, and denial of family rights and recognition. </p> We work for a world where all people can enjoy their rights fully. </p> <div class="view-field field-image-caption"> <p> Photo: © The Rainbow Project, Namibia 2001. </p> </div> <hr/> <p> <strong> A Legislative Attack on LGBT People in Uganda</strong> </p> <p> Uganda's parliament is due to discuss a proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill on May 13, 2011 at 10am. The bill would introduce the death penalty as a sanction for some consensual sex between members of the same sex, the same penalty provided for terrorism and treason. It would be an offense for a person who is aware of any violations of the bill's provisions not to report them to the relevant authorities within 24 hours. </p> <p> The bill also would criminalize the "promotion of homosexuality," which would jeopardize the legitimate work of national and international activists and organizations working to defend and promote human rights in Uganda. </p> <p> "Parliamentarians in Uganda should clearly reject this bill if it comes to a vote," said Graeme Reid, LGBT director at Human Rights Watch. "The bill's provisions threaten the fundamental freedoms of all Ugandans." </p> <hr/> <p>(Kampala, May 13, 2011) - Uganda's proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill was not debated or tabled for a vote in parliament on May 13, 2011, despite suggestions it would do so. The mandate of this parliament officially concludes on May 18, but the swearing in of new parliamentarians next week will in practice prevent any further legislative debate. </p> <p> The bill could be presented in the next parliament, mostly likely opening in June, in its current or in an amended form.
