How<MH637> much<MH637, 3588> more<MH637, 3588> then if<MH3588> we go<MH1980> to Keilah<MH7084> against<MH413> the ranks<MH4634> of the Philistines<MH6430>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> inquired<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068> once<MH3254, 5750> more<MH5750>. And the LORD<MH3068> answered<MH6030a> him and said<MH559>, “Arise<MH6965>, go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Keilah<MH7084>, for I am going to hand<MH5414, 3027> the Philistines<MH6430> over<MH5414> to you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> and his men<MH376> went<MH1980> to Keilah<MH7084> and fought<MH3898a> the Philistines<MH6430>; and he drove<MH5090a> away<MH5090a> their livestock<MH4735> and struck<MH5221> them with a great<MH1419> slaughter<MH4347>. So David<MH1732> saved<MH3467> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Keilah<MH7084>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when Abiathar<MH54> the son<MH1121> of Ahimelech<MH288> fled<MH1272> to David<MH1732> at Keilah<MH7084>, <i>that</i> he came<MH3381> down<MH3381> <i>with</i> an ephod<MH646> in his hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>When it was reported<MH5046> to Saul<MH7586> that David<MH1732> had come<MH935> to Keilah<MH7084>, Saul<MH7586> said<MH559>, “God<MH430> has handed<MH5235a, 3027> him over<MH5235a> to me, for he shut<MH5462> himself in<MH5462> by entering<MH935> a city<MH5892b> with double gates<MH1817> and bars<MH1280>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So Saul<MH7586> summoned<MH8085> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> for war<MH4421>, to go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Keilah<MH7084> to besiege<MH6696a> David<MH1732> and his men<MH376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But David<MH1732> knew<MH3045> that Saul<MH7586> was plotting<MH2790a> evil<MH7463a> against<MH5921> him; so he said<MH559> to Abiathar<MH54> the priest<MH3548>, “Bring<MH5066> the ephod<MH646> here<MH5066>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559>, “LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, Your servant<MH5650> has heard<MH8085> for<MH8085> certain<MH8085> that Saul<MH7586> is seeking<MH1245> to come<MH935> to Keilah<MH7084> to destroy<MH7843> the city<MH5892b> on my account<MH5668>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Will the citizens<MH1167> of Keilah<MH7084> hand<MH5462> me over<MH5462> to him? Will Saul<MH7586> come<MH3381> down<MH3381> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> Your servant<MH5650> has heard<MH8085>? LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, please<MH4994>, tell<MH5046> Your servant<MH5650>.” And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “He will come<MH3381> down<MH3381>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559>, “Will the citizens<MH1167> of Keilah<MH7084> hand<MH5462> me and my men<MH376> over<MH5462> to Saul<MH7586>?” And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “They will hand<MH5462> you over<MH5462>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> and his men<MH376>, about six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967>, rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> and departed<MH3318> from Keilah<MH7084>, and they went<MH1980> wherever<MH834> they could go<MH1980>. When it was reported<MH5046> to Saul<MH7586> that David<MH1732> had escaped<MH4422> from Keilah<MH7084>, he gave<MH2308> up<MH2308> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>the pursuit<MH3318>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>David<MH1732> stayed<MH3427> in the wilderness<MH4057b> in the strongholds<MH4679>, and remained<MH3427> in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Ziph<MH2128>. And Saul<MH7586> searched<MH1245> for him every<MH3605> day<MH3117>, but God<MH430> did not hand<MH3027, 5414> him over<MH5414> to him. <p class="hdg">Saul Pursues David</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now David<MH1732> saw<MH7200> that Saul<MH7586> had come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to seek<MH1245> his life<MH5315> while David<MH1732> was in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Ziph<MH2128>, at Horesh<MH2793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And Jonathan<MH3083>, Saul’s<MH7586> son<MH1121>, set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to David<MH1732> at Horesh<MH2793>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>encouraged<MH2388, 3027> him in God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>He said<MH559> to him, “Do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>, because<MH3588> the hand<MH3027> of Saul<MH7586> my father<MH1> will not find<MH4672> you, and you will be<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>, and I will be second<MH4932> in<MH4932> command<MH4932> to you; and Saul<MH7586> my father<MH1> knows<MH3045> that as<MH1571> well<MH1571>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So the two<MH8147> of them made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>; and David<MH1732> stayed<MH3427> at Horesh<MH2793>, while Jonathan<MH3083> went<MH1980> to his house<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then Ziphites<MH2130> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Saul<MH7586> at Gibeah<MH1390>, saying<MH559>, “Is David<MH1732> not keeping<MH5641> himself hidden<MH5641> with us in the strongholds<MH4679> at Horesh<MH2793>, on the hill<MH1389> of Hachilah<MH2444>, which<MH834> is south<MH3225> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Jeshimon<MH3452>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, O king<MH4428>, come<MH3381> down<MH3381>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>since you fully<MH3605> desire<MH185> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>do<MH3381> so<MH3381>; and our part <i>shall be</i> to hand<MH5462> him over<MH5462> to the king<MH4428>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Saul<MH7586> said<MH559>, “May you be blessed<MH1288> of the LORD<MH3068>, since<MH3588> you have had<MH2550> compassion<MH2550> on me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Go<MH1980> now<MH4994>, be<MH3559> more<MH5750> persistent<MH3559>, and investigate<MH3045> and see<MH7200> his place<MH4725> where<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>he is hiding<MH7272>, <i>and</i> who<MH4310> has seen<MH7200> him there<MH8033>; for I am told<MH559> that he is very<MH6191> cunning<MH6191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So look<MH7200>, and learn<MH3045> about<MH4480> all<MH3605> the hiding<MH4224b> places<MH4224b> where<MH834, 8033> he keeps<MH2244> himself hidden<MH2244>, and return<MH7725> to me with certainty<MH3559>, and I will go<MH1980> with you; and if<MH518> he is in the land<MH776>, I will search<MH2664> him out<MH2664> among all<MH3605> the thousands<MH505> of Judah<MH3063>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So they set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH1980> to Ziph<MH2128> ahead<MH6440> of Saul<MH7586>. Now David<MH1732> and his men<MH376> were in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Maon<MH4584>, in the Arabah<MH6160> to the south<MH3225> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Jeshimon<MH3452>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>When Saul<MH7586> and his men<MH376> went<MH1980> to seek<MH1245> <i>him,</i> they informed<MH5046> David<MH1732>, and he came<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the rock<MH5553> and stayed<MH3427> in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Maon<MH4584>.
