In der unwirtlichen, vom schroffen Margeride-Gebirgszug durchzogenen Landschaft treibt eine schreckliche Bestie ihr Unwesen. Bauern und Hirten trauen sich kaum mehr aus ihren Häusern. Marquis Claude Aloïs d’Apcher, der über das Gévaudan herrscht, hat in seiner Not sogar eine Rotte von Söldnern angeheuert, die allerdings jene, die sie vor der Bestie schützen sollen, gar zu gern belästigen oder berauben.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">De Fronsac soll sich über den Stand der Jagd informieren, die Bestie - sobald endlich gefangen - fachkundig präparieren und sie an den Königshof schaffen. Der Forscher reist in Begleitung seines indianischen Blutsbruders Mani, den er in den französischen Kolonien Nordamerikas kennenlernte. Vom Marquis und seinem jungen Enkel Thomas freundlich aufgenommen, beginnen de Fronsac und Mani ihre Untersuchung und stoßen auf offene Fragen und Widersprüche. Bald steht fest, dass die Bestie von Gévaudan kein Wolf sein kann.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Erfolgreicher sind de Fronsacs Versuche, die Aufmerksamkeit der jungen und schönen Comtesse Marianne de Morangias zu erregen. Das ist nicht einfach, denn ihr finsterer Bruder Jean-François, der bei einem Jagdausflug in Afrika einen Arm und offenbar auch seine Seele verlor, ist stets um seine Schwester, für die er eine ungesunde Liebe zu hegen scheint.</p><script type='text/javascript'>OA_show(49);</script><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Die Bestie mordet munter weiter - und lockt die große Politik in die abgelegene Provinz. Der Papst nutzt die Chance, gegen Ludwig XV. und sein der Kirche unbotmäßiges „Ancien régime“ Stimmung zu machen, und unterstützt quasirevolutionäre Bewegungen gegen die „unfähige“ Regierung. Der König muss reagieren und inszeniert ein Täuschungsmanöver. Ohnmächtig muss de Fronsac sich instrumentalisieren lassen. Ein großer, just erlegter Wolf wird als „Bestie von Gévaudan“ ausgegeben und im Triumph vorgeführt; der Forscher muss dem Kadaver Ungeheuer-Gestalt geben. Aber de Fronsac schwört die Suche nach der Wahrheit nicht aufzugeben. Heimlich kehren er und Mani ins Gévaudan zurück, stellen der wahren Bestie eine Falle - und erregen die Aufmerksamkeit eines düsteren Geheimbundes, dem die wahre Bestie als Werkzeug dient ...</p><h3 class="MsoNoSpacing">Solides Begleitprodukt eines Klassikers</h3><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Etwas Seltenes konnte man kurz nach dem Millennium genießen: eine historisch-phantastische Abenteuergeschichte mit großem, epischem Atem, doch weder entstanden in Hollywood, wo Visionen und Träumen konsumentenkonform eingeebnet werden, noch entschlüpft den sumpfigen Gestaden der trivialen Phantastik, die zumindest in Europa gar zu oft von zwar begeisterten, aber nicht zwangsläufig geeigneten, weil formal wie inhaltlich dem Stoff kaum gewachsenen Schriftsteller-Routiniers und Hobby-Autoren repräsentiert wird.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Der Ruhm und die Begeisterung, die der „Pakt der Wölfe“ auf sich zog, gründet sich nicht primär auf den gleichnamigen Roman, sondern auf den Kinofilm des Jahres 2001. Er stellte ein definitiv für die große Leinwand geschaffenes Film-Ereignis dar, das kein Drama, keine Komödie, kein (Horror-)Thriller ist, sondern etwas, das zumindest die Filmkritik seit jeher hasst: ein Grenzgänger zwischen den Genres, der bildgewaltig eine spannende Geschichte erzählen will und den durchaus vorhandenen Subtext so geschickt einfließen lässt, dass er sich von denen ignorieren lässt, die keinen Wert auf Filmkunst legen. Unter der Regie von Christophe Gans entstand ein kompromissloses B-Movie der Güteklasse A. Gans (gemeinsam mit Stéphane Cabel auch Drehbuchautor) nahm sich stolze 142 Minuten Zeit, um zu erzählen, ohne dabei einen Moment Langeweile aufkommen zu lassen.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Natürlich wurde ein Filmprojekt dieser Dimension von einem entsprechenden Werbefeldzug begleitet. Dazu gehörte ein „Roman zum Film“. Auch hier ging man neue Wege. Üblicherweise werden Romanfassungen von Kinofilmen an zweit- oder drittklassige Zeilenschinder bzw. ‚richtige‘ Schriftsteller vergeben, die gerade finanziell in der Klemme sitzen. Das Ergebnis ist in der Regel Ex-und-Hopp-Lektüre für eine nachmittägliche Bahnfahrt. Dieses Mal nahm man den Leser ein wenig ernster und trat an einen Großen des französischen Unterhaltungsromans heran. Pierre Pelot ist im deutschen Nachbarland ein ungemein aktiver und populärer Autor, dessen Science Fiction- und Kriminalromane ihm ein beachtliches Publikum bescheren.</p><h3 class="MsoNoSpacing">Wer ist die Bestie?</h3><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Pelot legt sich tüchtig ins Zeug und gibt sein Bestes, dem „Pakt der Wölfe“ als Roman ein eigenständiges Leben einzuhauchen. Dabei orientiert er sich eng am Drehbuch, bereichert aber die Handlung dort, wo sie davon profitiert, mit eigenen Details. Das betrifft einerseits vordergründige Aspekte; obwohl „Der Pakt der Wölfe“ ein europäischer Film ist und daher der bigotten US-Prüderie enthoben blieb, durften z. B. die Szenen im „Salon“ der Madame Teissier wohl vergleichsweise freizügig inszeniert werden, mussten sich aber dennoch gewissen Konventionen unterwerfen. Pelot streift hingegen die Grenze zum mild Pornografischen und schafft es gleichzeitig, gewisse Wesenszüge seiner Figuren auf diese Weise glaubhaft zu vertiefen. Gute Arbeit leistet Pelot auch in der Beschreibung des Gévaudans und seiner rauen Bewohner. Vieles, was auf der Leinwand pittoresk anzuschauen ist, aber ohne nähere Erklärung bleibt, wird nun nicht nur erläutert, sondern fügt sich harmonisch ins Geschehen ein.</p><p class="MsoNoSpacing">Behutsam bemüht sich Pierre Pelot auf diese Weise auszugleichen, was den Fans des Films als Majestätsbeleidigung gelten mag: Obwohl Christophe Gans und Stéphane Cabel Großartiges geleistet haben, ist ihr Werk kein durchweg guter Film. Vom der peinlich missglückten CGI-Bestie einmal ganz abgesehen, haben sie ihre Geschichte allzu überfrachtet. Eine recht einfache Monsterjagd entwickelt sich zum Polit-Thriller und schließlich zur Verschwörungs-Story der konstruierten Art. Dazwischen findet ein auch im europäischen Kino obligatorisches Liebesdrama statt. Wahllos auf dem Rücken der Handlung werden weiterhin platziert: Sozialkritik, Spitzen gegen Kirche und Politik, Lektionen in (indianischer) Ethnographie, schwarzer Magie und Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Winke mit dem Zaunpfahl auf die nahende Französische Revolution ...</p><p>Es ist von allem ein bisschen zu viel, was auf der Leinwand allerdings durch prachtvolle Bilder und turbulente Action übertüncht wird, bis der rote Faden im finalen Kapuzenknilch-Getümmel endgültig ausfasert und reisst. Das kann Pierre Pelot natürlich im Alleingang nachträglich nicht mehr ausbügeln. Er hat dennoch gute Arbeit geleistet, weshalb immerhin ansatzweise gilt, was ein Kritiker des französischen „Le Monde“ auf der Rückseite des Umschlagdeckels so in Worte fasste: „Wenn Sie den Film gesehen haben, ist dieses Buch ein Muss [Unsinn] - wenn nicht, erst recht [Dem kann zugestimmt werden]!”</p><h2>Fazit:</h2><p>Die überfrachtete Story eines durch Schauwerte und schauspielerische Leistungen überdurchschnittlichen Films wird in diesem „tie-in“-Roman eine behutsam entlastet und verdeutlicht.
