The result--a decline in student essential literacy skills and an increase in plagiarism.

The Colorado Study and more than ten other formal state level studies can be used to demonstrate the value of librarians and library resources in increasing language arts skills achievement--the same skills tested on state assessments. In an era when No Child Left Behind emphasizes state testing of essential skills, how can administrators consciously reduce or eliminate a scientific research-proven method of instruction and learning?

In a digital world, the librarian is more important than ever, helping students and teachers to identify K-12 relevant and authoritative information. About 7 percent of what is found on the free Internet is K-12 worthy.

Do students have the time, interest, and expertise to be able to select relevant and authoritative information from Internet surfing? Do most students really care about and use any training they get on how to evaluate websites for authority and relevancy? Could time spent teaching about website evaluation be spent in more productive standards-based learning? Should teachers spend uproductive time supervising student surfing for safety and decency instead of using the same time to coach students in how to use information for problem solving? Do most teachers know enough about teaching digital information literacy to be effective coaches for students with librarian support?

Today, through the use of ProQuest products, databases become more than quality collections of learning resources. They provide the teacher and student tools to become education solutions that increase teacher effectiveness and increase student achievement in essential skills and academic content.

To raise student achievement, librarians must support both teachers and students who are steeped in the world of textbook teaching and learning, and multiple-choice assessment. The 21st Century essential skills now in demand are inferential reading, critical thinking, and their synthesis into writing and presentation.

These are the skills that most textbook focused teachers have little experience in teaching.
