They are often used by God to communicate with His people, authenticate His messengers, or demonstrate His power and authority. Signs can be found throughout both the Old and New Testaments, serving various purposes in God's redemptive plan.

Old Testament

In the Old Testament, signs are frequently associated with God's covenantal promises and His deliverance of Israel. One of the earliest examples is the rainbow, given as a sign of God's covenant with Noah that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood (Genesis 9:12-17). Another significant sign is the circumcision of Abraham and his descendants, marking the covenant between God and Abraham (Genesis 17:11).

The plagues of Egypt are perhaps some of the most dramatic signs in the Old Testament. God used these signs to demonstrate His power over the Egyptian gods and to compel Pharaoh to release the Israelites from slavery (Exodus 7:3-5). The parting of the Red Sea is another miraculous sign of God's deliverance (Exodus 14:21-22).

In the prophetic books, signs often accompany the messages of the prophets. For instance, Isaiah was given a sign to assure King Ahaz of God's protection: "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14).

New Testament

In the New Testament, signs continue to play a crucial role, particularly in the ministry of Jesus Christ. The miracles performed by Jesus are often referred to as "signs" because they reveal His divine nature and authority. The Gospel of John emphasizes this aspect, stating, "Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name" (John 20:30-31).

The birth of Jesus itself is marked by signs, such as the star that guided the Magi to Bethlehem (Matthew 2:2) and the angelic announcement to the shepherds (Luke 2:12). Jesus' resurrection is the ultimate sign of His victory over sin and death, affirming His identity as the Son of God (Romans 1:4).

The apostles also performed signs and wonders as a testament to the truth of the Gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit. In Acts, we read, "And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people" (Acts 5:12).

Eschatological Signs

The Bible also speaks of signs related to the end times. Jesus, in His Olivet Discourse, describes various signs that will precede His second coming, including wars, famines, earthquakes, and celestial disturbances (Matthew 24:3-30). These signs serve as warnings and reminders for believers to remain vigilant and faithful.

Purpose and Interpretation

Signs in the Bible are not merely supernatural occurrences but are deeply tied to God's purposes and plans. They are meant to inspire faith, provide assurance, and call people to repentance. However, the Bible also warns against seeking signs for the wrong reasons. Jesus rebuked those who demanded signs as proof of His authority, saying, "A wicked and adulterous generation demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah" (Matthew 16:4).

In summary, signs in the Bible are multifaceted, serving as divine communications that reveal God's character, affirm His promises, and guide His people. They are integral to understanding the unfolding of God's redemptive history and His ultimate plan for creation.
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
SIGNS OF THE HEAVENS
See ASTRONOMY, sec.
