The mountain sits at the western edge of the Sichuan Basin with the Daxiangling Mountains located in its west. A large surrounding area of countryside is geologically known as the Permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province, a large igneous province generated by the Emeishan Traps volcanic eruptions during the Permian Period. At 3,099 meters, Mount Emei is the highest of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. It has been recorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The first Buddhist temple built here in the 1st century A.D. in the beautiful surroundings of the summit is believed to be the first </span></span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;">Buddhist temple built</span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px;"> in China</span><span style="font-size: 16px; font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">. The addition of other temples turned the site into one of Buddhism's holiest sites. Over the centuries, the cultural treasures grew in number. Mount Emei is also notable for its exceptionally diverse vegetation, ranging from subtropical to subalpine pine forests. Some of the trees here are more than 1,000 years old. With the rich biodiversity, Mount Emei is a great birding location. At an elevation of about 3,000 meters, there are abundant alpine coniferous forests and alpine thickets.
