In this study, the dispersion characteristics and wave structures of Stoneley waves in elastic multilayered plates are displayed and investigated. With a perspective of bulk wave, a reasonable assumption of the potential function forms of the expansion wave and shear wave in nth layer medium is adopted, and the characteristic equation of Stoneley waves in a three-layered plate is given in a determinant form. The dispersion curves and wave structures are solved and presented in both numerical and simulation results. It is observed that two Stoneley wave modes exist in a three-layered plate, that conspicuous dispersion occurs on low frequency band, that the velocity of each Stoneley wave mode approaches the corresponding Stoneley wave velocity at interface between two half infinite spaces. The wave structures reveal that the in-plane displacement of Stoneley waves are relatively high at interfaces, which shows great potential for interface defects detection. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=characteristic%20equation" title="characteristic equation">characteristic equation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interface%20waves" title=" interface waves"> interface waves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=potential%20function" title=" potential function"> potential function</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stoneley%20waves" title=" Stoneley waves"> Stoneley waves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave%20structure" title=" wave structure"> wave structure</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/45214/investigation-of-stoneley-waves-in-multilayered-plates" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/45214.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">319</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2032</span> Thermal Effect on Wave Interaction in Composite Structures</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R.%20K.%20Apalowo">R. Moreover, temperature dependent wave response of composite and layered structures have been continuously studied, though still limited, in the last decade mainly due to the broad operating temperature range of aerospace structures. A wave finite element (WFE) and finite element (FE) based computational method is presented by which the temperature dependent wave dispersion characteristics and interaction phenomenon in composite structures can be predicted. Initially, the temperature dependent mechanical properties of the panel in the range of -100 ◦C to 150 ◦C are measured experimentally using the Thermal Mechanical Analysis (TMA). Temperature dependent wave dispersion characteristics of each waveguide of the structural system, which is discretized as a system of a number of waveguides coupled by a coupling element, is calculated using the WFE approach. The wave scattering properties, as a function of temperature, is determined by coupling the WFE wave characteristics models of the waveguides with the full FE modelling of the coupling element on which defect is included. Numerical case studies are exhibited for two waveguides coupled through a coupling element. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20element" title="finite element">finite element</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temperature%20dependency" title=" temperature dependency"> temperature dependency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave%20dispersion%20characteristics" title=" wave dispersion characteristics"> wave dispersion characteristics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave%20finite%20element" title=" wave finite element"> wave finite element</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave%20scattering%20properties" title=" wave scattering properties"> wave scattering properties</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58484/thermal-effect-on-wave-interaction-in-composite-structures" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58484.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">308</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2031</span> Effect of Rotation on Love Wave Propagation in Piezoelectric Medium with Corrugation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Soniya%20Chaudhary">Soniya Chaudhary</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The present study analyses the propagation of Love wave in rotating piezoelectric layer lying over an elastic substrate with corrugated boundaries. Ultrasonic guided wave is one of the most popular techniques in analyzing the propagation of elastic guided wave. The goal of this paper is to investigate the propagation of elastic waves in the isotropic bar with trapezoid cross-section. Dispersion curves that describe the relationship between the frequency and velocity provide the fundamental information to describe the propagation of elastic waves through a structure. Based on the SAFE (semi-analytical finite element) a linear algebraic system of equations is obtained. By using numerical methods, dispersion curves solved for the rods with the trapezoid cross-section. These fundamental information plays an important role in applying ultrasonic guided waves to NTD for structures with trapezoid cross section. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=guided%20wave" title="guided wave">guided wave</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion" title=" dispersion"> dispersion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20element%20method" title=" finite element method"> finite element method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trapezoid%20rod" title=" trapezoid rod"> trapezoid rod</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30839/guided-wave-in-a-cylinder-with-trepezoid-cross-section" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30839.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">291</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2029</span> Wave Interaction with Defects in Pressurized Composite Structures</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R.%20K.%20Apalowo">R. Numerical computation of the real part of the obtained dispersion relation gives the dispersion curve whereas the imaginary part bestows the damping curves. Dispersion relation for electromagnetic waves emitted by a cylindrical waveguide that provided with wedge-shaped metal vanes projecting radially inward from the wall of the guide and exited in the transverse-electric mode was analysed. From numerical analysis of this dispersion relation, it is shown that the stability behavior of the fast-wave mode is dependent of the dielectric constant. With a small axial momentum spreed, a super bandwidth is shown to be attainable by a mixed mode operation. Also, with the utilization from the numeric analysis of relation dispersion. We show that in the –speed mode, the constant is independent de-electric. With the ratio of dispersion of smell, high –bandwith was obtained for the combined mode. It is found that downward electron beam affects the dispersion relation, growth/damping-rate and associated currents in cold electron limit. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=magnetospheric%20physics" title="magnetospheric physics">magnetospheric physics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plasma%20waves%20and%20instabilities" title=" plasma waves and instabilities"> plasma waves and instabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electron%20beam" title=" electron beam"> electron beam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=space%20plasma%20physics" title=" space plasma physics"> space plasma physics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave-particle%20interactions" title=" wave-particle interactions"> wave-particle interactions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5551/electron-beam-effects-on-kinetic-alfven-waves-in-the-cold-homogenous-plasma" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5551.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">394</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2024</span> Designing a Dispersion Flattened Single Mode PCF for E-Band to U-Band with Less Effective Area</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shabbir%20Chowdhury">Shabbir Chowdhury</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A signal is broadened when it is gone through a channel, this phenomenon is known as dispersion. In this regard, a multiphase numerical model is applied for which waves and oil phase were computed concurrently, and accuracy of its hydraulic calculations have been proven. More than 200 various scenarios of oil spilling in wave waters were simulated using the multiphase numerical model and its outcome were collected in a database. The recorded results were investigated to identify the major parameters affected vertical oil dispersion and finally 6 parameters were identified as main independent factors. Furthermore, some statistical tests were conducted to identify any relationship between the dependent variable (dispersed oil mass in the water column) and independent variables (water wave specifications containing height, length and wave period and spilled oil characteristics including density, viscosity and spilled oil mass). Finally, a mathematical-statistical relationship is proposed to predict dispersed oil in marine waters. To verify the proposed relationship, a laboratory example available in the literature was selected. Oil mass rate penetrated in water body computed by statistical regression was in accordance with experimental data was predicted. On this occasion, it was necessary to verify the proposed mathematical phrase. In a selected laboratory case available in the literature, mass oil rate penetrated in water body computed by suggested regression. Results showed good agreement with experimental data. The validated mathematical-statistical phrase is a useful tool for oil dispersion prediction in oil spill events in marine areas. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion" title="dispersion">dispersion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=marine%20environment" title=" marine environment"> marine environment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mathematical-statistical%20relationship" title=" mathematical-statistical relationship"> mathematical-statistical relationship</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oil%20spill" title=" oil spill"> oil spill</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51962/dispersion-rate-of-spilled-oil-in-water-column-under-non-breaking-water-waves" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51962.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">233</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2020</span> Dispersion Effects in Waves Reflected by Lossy Conductors: The Optics vs. Electromagnetics Approach </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Oibar%20Martinez">Oibar Martinez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Clara%20Oliver"> Clara Oliver</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose%20Miguel%20Miranda"> Jose Miguel Miranda</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The study of dispersion phenomena in electromagnetic waves reflected by conductors at infrared and lower frequencies is a topic which finds a number of applications. We aim to explain in this work what are the most relevant ones and how this phenomenon is modeled from both optics and electromagnetics points of view. We also explain here how the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave reflected by a lossy conductor could depend on both the frequency of the incident wave, as well as on the electrical properties of the conductor, and we illustrate this phenomenon with a practical example. The mathematical analysis made by a specialist in electromagnetics or a microwave engineer is apparently very different from the one made by a specialist in optics. We show here how both approaches lead to the same physical result and what are the key concepts which enable one to understand that despite the differences in the equations the solution to the problem happens to be the same. Our study starts with an analysis made by using the complex refractive index and the reflectance parameter. We show how this reflectance has a dependence with the square root of the frequency when the reflecting material is a good conductor, and the frequency of the wave is low enough. Then we analyze the same problem with a less known approach, which is based on the reflection coefficient of the electric field, a parameter that is most commonly used in electromagnetics and microwave engineering. In summary, this paper presents a mathematical study illustrated with a worked example which unifies the modeling of dispersion effects made by specialists in optics and the one made by specialists in electromagnetics. The main finding of this work is that it is possible to reproduce the dependence of the Fresnel reflectance with frequency from the intrinsic impedance of the reflecting media. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion" title="dispersion">dispersion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electromagnetic%20waves" title=" electromagnetic waves"> electromagnetic waves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microwaves" title=" microwaves"> microwaves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optics" title=" optics"> optics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107650/dispersion-effects-in-waves-reflected-by-lossy-conductors-the-optics-vs-electromagnetics-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/107650.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">129</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2019</span> Implication of the Exchange-Correlation on Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Abdikian">A. The electronic excitations are described. By solving the mentioned equations with appropriate boundary conditions and by assuming the low-frequency electromagnetic waves, two general expressions of dispersion relations are derived for the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes, respectively. The dispersion relations are analyzed numerically and it was found that the dependency of dispersion curves with the exchange-correlation effects (which have been ignored in previous works) in the low frequency would be limited. Moreover, it has been realized that asymptotic behaviors of the TE and TM modes are similar in single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The results show that by adding the function of electron exchange-correlation potential lead to the phenomena and make to extend the validity range of QHD model. The results can be important in the study of collective phenomena in nanostructures. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transverse%20magnetic" title="transverse magnetic">transverse magnetic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transverse%20electric" title=" transverse electric"> transverse electric</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quantum%20hydrodynamic%20model" title=" quantum hydrodynamic model"> quantum hydrodynamic model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electron%20exchange-correlation%20potential" title=" electron exchange-correlation potential"> electron exchange-correlation potential</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=single-wall%20carbon%20nanotubes" title=" single-wall carbon nanotubes"> single-wall carbon nanotubes</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/69939/implication-of-the-exchange-correlation-on-electromagnetic-wave-propagation-in-single-wall-carbon-nanotubes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/69939.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">450</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2018</span> Evaluation of the Adsorption Adaptability of Activated Carbon Using Dispersion Force</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Masao%20Fujisawa">Masao Fujisawa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hirohito%20Ikeda"> Hirohito Ikeda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tomonori%20Ohata"> Tomonori Ohata</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Miho%20Yukawa"> Miho Yukawa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hatsumi%20Aki"> Hatsumi Aki</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Takayoshi%20Kimura"> Takayoshi Kimura</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We attempted to predict adsorption coefficients by utilizing dispersion energies. By using Kronig Penny model, the dispersion relation of electromagnetic modes for such a periodic structure is obtained. In this study we take two plasma photonic crystals with different dielectric layers: the first one with Silicon monoxide named PPCI, and the second one with Tellurium dioxide named PPCII. The effects of the plasma layer thickness and the material of the dielectric layer on the plasma photonic crystal band gaps have been illustrated in the dispersion relation and the group velocity figures. Results revealed that in such a system, the non-thermal plasma exerts stronger limit on the wave’s propagation. In another word, for the non-thermal plasma photonic crystals (NPPC), there are two distinct regions in the dispersion plot. The upper region consists of alternate band gaps in such a way that both width and length of the bands decrease gradually as the band gaps order increases. Whereas in the lower region where v_ph > 20 c (for PPCI), waves will not be allowed to propagate. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=band%20gap" title="band gap">band gap</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion%20relation" title=" dispersion relation"> dispersion relation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-thermal%20plasma" title=" non-thermal plasma"> non-thermal plasma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plasma%20photonic%20crystal" title=" plasma photonic crystal"> plasma photonic crystal</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24618/interesting-behavior-of-non-thermal-plasma-photonic-crystals" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24618.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">539</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2015</span> Modeling and Computational Validation of Dispersion Curves of Guide Waves in a Pipe Using ANSYS</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Perdomo">A. The bulk and structural properties of the calculated structures were compared to different experimental and calculated works. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DFT" title="DFT">DFT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exchange-correlation%20functional" title=" exchange-correlation functional"> exchange-correlation functional</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LDA" title=" LDA"> LDA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GGA" title=" GGA"> GGA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pseudopotential" title=" pseudopotential"> pseudopotential</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PAW" title=" PAW"> PAW</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=VASP" title=" VASP"> VASP</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PHON" title=" PHON"> PHON</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phonon%20dispersion" title="phonon dispersion ">phonon dispersion </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21663/ab-initio-studies-of-structural-and-thermal-properties-of-aluminum-alloys" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21663.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">485</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2013</span> Effect of Transmission Distance on the Performance of Hybrid Configuration Using Non Return to Zero (NRZ) Pulse Format</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mais%20Wa%27ad">Mais Wa'ad</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The effect of transmission distance on the performance of hybrid configuration H 10-40 Gb/s with Non-Return to Zero (NRZ) pulse format, 100 GHz channel spacing, and Multiplexer/De-Multiplexer Band width (MUX/DEMUX BW) of 60 GHz has been investigated in this study. The simulation has been done using Optiwave Inc Optisys software. Usually, increasing distance will lead to decrease in performance; however this is not always the case, as the simulation conducted in this work, shows different system performance for each channel. This is due to differences in interaction between dispersion and non-linearity, and the differences in residual dispersion for each channel. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion%20and%20non-linearity%20interaction" title="dispersion and non-linearity interaction">dispersion and non-linearity interaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20hybrid%20configuration" title=" optical hybrid configuration"> optical hybrid configuration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multiplexer%2Fde%20multiplexer%20bandwidth" title=" multiplexer/de multiplexer bandwidth"> multiplexer/de multiplexer bandwidth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-return%20to%20zero" title=" non-return to zero"> non-return to zero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20transmission%20distance" title=" optical transmission distance"> optical transmission distance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optisys" title=" optisys"> optisys</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33577/effect-of-transmission-distance-on-the-performance-of-hybrid-configuration-using-non-return-to-zero-nrz-pulse-format" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33577.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">559</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2012</span> Effect of Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Chemical Reactions on Peristaltic Flow of a Jeffrey Fluid in an Asymmetric Channel</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=G.%20Ravi%20Kiran">G. To achieve maximum sound power output, it is important that multiple transducers are arranged in a particular way so that a desired mode can be excited. The objective of this paper is thus to provide a theoretical basis for generating a particular mode in a finite width rectangular plate which can be used for removing potential ice or fouling on the plate. The number of transducers and their locations with respect to a particular mode will be investigated, and the link between dispersion curves and practical applications will be explored. To achieve this, a semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) method is used to study the dispersion characteristics of all the modes in the ultrasonic frequency range. The detailed modal shapes will be revealed, and from the modal analysis, the particular mode with the strongest yet continuous transverse and axial displacements on the surfaces of the plate will be chosen for the purpose of removing potential ice or fouling on the plate. The modal analysis is followed by providing information on the number, location and amplitude of transducers needed to excite this particular mode. Modal excitation is then implemented in a standard finite element commercial package, namely COMSOL Multiphysics. Wave motion is visualized in COMSOL, and the mode shapes generated in SAFE is found to be consistent with the mode shapes generated in COMSOL. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion%20analysis" title="dispersion analysis">dispersion analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20width%20plate" title=" finite width plate"> finite width plate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=guided%20wave" title=" guided wave"> guided wave</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modal%20excitation" title=" modal excitation"> modal excitation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40120/excitation-of-guided-waves-in-finite-width-plates-using-a-numerical-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40120.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">473</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2010</span> Discussion on Dispersion Curves of Non-penetrable Soils from in-Situ Seismic Dilatometer Measurements</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angelo%20Aloisio%20Dag">Angelo Aloisio Dag</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pasquale%20Pasca"> Pasquale Pasca</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Massimo%20Fragiacomo"> Massimo Fragiacomo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ferdinando%20Totani"> Ferdinando Totani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gianfranco%20Totani"> Gianfranco Totani</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The estimate of the velocity of shear waves (Vs) is essential in seismic engineering to characterize the dynamic response of soils. There are various direct methods to estimate the Vs. The authors report the results of site characterization in Macerata, where they measured the Vs using the seismic dilatometer in a 100m deep borehole. The standard Vs estimation originates from the cross-correlation between the signals acquired by two geophones at increasing depths. This paper focuses on the estimate of the dependence of Vs on the wavenumber. The dispersion curves reveal an unexpected hyperbolic dispersion curve typical of Lamb waves. Interestingly, the contribution of Lamb waves may be notable up to 100m depth. The amplitude of surface waves decrease rapidly with depth: still, their influence may be essential up to depths considered unusual for standard geotechnical investigations, where their effect is generally neglected. Accordingly, these waves may bias the outcomes of the standard Vs estimations, which ignore frequency-dependent phenomena. The paper proposes an enhancement of the accepted procedure to estimate Vs and addresses the importance of Lamb waves in soil characterization. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersion%20curve" title="dispersion curve">dispersion curve</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20dilatometer" title=" seismic dilatometer"> seismic dilatometer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20wave" title=" shear wave"> shear wave</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20mechanics" title=" soil mechanics"> soil mechanics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132758/discussion-on-dispersion-curves-of-non-penetrable-soils-from-in-situ-seismic-dilatometer-measurements" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132758.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">172</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2009</span> Elastodynamic Response of Shear Wave Dispersion in a Multi-Layered Concentric Cylinders Composed of Reinforced and Piezo-Materials</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sunita%20Kumawat">Sunita Kumawat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sumit%20Kumar%20Vishwakarma"> Sumit Kumar Vishwakarma</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The present study fundamentally focuses on analyzing the limitations and transference of horizontally polarized Shear waves(SH waves) in a four-layered compounded cylinder. The geometrical structure comprises of concentric cylinders of infinite length composed of self-reinforced (SR), fibre-reinforced (FR), piezo-magnetic (PM), and piezo-electric(PE) materials. The entire structure is assumed to be pre stressed along the azimuthal direction. In order to make the structure sensitive to the application pertaining to sensors and actuators, the PM and PE cylinders have been categorically placed in the outer part of the geometry. Whereas in order to provide stiffness and stability to the structure, the inner part consists of self-reinforced and fibre-reinforced media. The common boundary between each of the cylinders has been essentially considered as imperfectly bounded. At the interface of PE and PM media, mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and inter-coupled types of imperfections have been exhibited. The closed-form of dispersion relation has been deduced for two contrast cases i.e. electrically open magnetically short(EOMS) and electrically short and magnetically open ESMO circuit conditions. Dispersion curves have been plotted to illustrate the salient features of parameters like normalized imperfect interface parameters, initial stresses, and radii of the concentric cylinders. The comparative effect of each one of these parameters on the phase velocity of the wave has been enlisted and marked individually. Every graph has been presented with two consecutive modes in succession for a comprehensive understanding. This theoretical study may be implemented to improvise the performance of surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors and actuators consisting of piezo-electric quartz and piezo-composite concentric cylinders. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-reinforced" title="self-reinforced">self-reinforced</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fibre-reinforced" title=" fibre-reinforced"> fibre-reinforced</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=piezo-electric" title=" piezo-electric"> piezo-electric</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=piezo-magnetic" title=" piezo-magnetic"> piezo-magnetic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interfacial%20imperfection" title=" interfacial imperfection"> interfacial imperfection</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154128/elastodynamic-response-of-shear-wave-dispersion-in-a-multi-layered-concentric-cylinders-composed-of-reinforced-and-piezo-materials" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154128.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">109</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2008</span> Lamb Waves in Plates Subjected to Uniaxial Stresses</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Munawwar%20Mohabuth">Munawwar Mohabuth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrei%20Kotousov"> Andrei Kotousov</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ching-Tai%20Ng"> Ching-Tai Ng</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> On the basis of the finite deformation theory, the effect of homogeneous stress on the propagation of Lamb waves in an initially isotropic hyperelastic plate is analysed. Stepanyants</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Effect of Earth rotation on nonlinear waves is a practically important and theoretically challenging problem of fluid mechanics and geophysics. Whereas the large-scale, geostrophic processes such as Rossby waves are a classical object of oceanic and atmospheric physics, rotation effects on mesoscale waves are not well studied. In particular, the Coriolis force can radically modify the behavior of nonlinear internal gravity waves in the ocean having spatial scales of 1-10 kilometers and time durations of few hours. In the last decade, such a non-trivial behavior was observed more than once. Similar effects are possible for magnetic sound in the ionosphere. Here we outline the main physical peculiarities in the behavior of nonlinear internal waves due to the rotation effect and present some results of our recent studies. The consideration is based on the fourth-order equation derived by one of the authors as a rotation-modified Korteweg–de Vries (rKdV) equation which includes two types of dispersion: one is responsible for the finiteness of depth as in the classical KdV equation; another is due to the Coriolis effect. This equation is, in general, non-integrable; moreover, under the conditions typical of oceanic waves (positive dispersion parameter), it does not allow solitary solutions at all. In the opposite case (negative dispersion) which is possible for, e.g., magnetic sound, solitary solutions do exist and can form complex bound states (multisoliton). Another non-trivial properties of nonlinear internal waves with rotation include, to name a few, the ‘terminal’ damping of the initial KdV soliton disappearing in a finite time due to radiation losses caused by Earth’s rotation, and eventual transformation of a KdV soliton into a wave packet (an envelope soliton). The new results to be discussed refer to the interaction of a soliton with a long background wave. It is shown, in particular, that in this case internal solitons can exist since the radiation losses are compensated by energy pumping from the background wave. Finally, the relevant oceanic observations of rotation effect on internal waves are briefly described. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Earth%20rotation" title="Earth rotation">Earth rotation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internal%20waves" title=" internal waves"> internal waves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nonlinear%20waves" title=" nonlinear waves"> nonlinear waves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=solitons" title=" solitons"> solitons</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28004/nonlinear-internal-waves-in-rotating-ocean" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/28004.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">671</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2005</span> Effects of Dispersion on Peristaltic Flow of a Micropolar Fluid Through a Porous Medium with Wall Effects in the Presence of Slip</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=G.%20Ravi%20Kiran">G. The Lippmann Schwinger equation (integral form of the Schrodinger wave equation) is solved for the nonrelativistic radial wave of hydrogen atom using iterative integration scheme. As the unknown wave function appears on both sides of the Lippmann Schwinger equation, therefore an approximate wave function is used in order to solve the equation. The Green’s function is obtained by the method of Laplace transform for the radial wave equation with excluded potential term. Using the Lippmann Schwinger equation, the product of approximate wave function, the Green’s function and the potential term is integrated iteratively. Finally, the wave function is normalized and plotted against the standard radial wave for comparison. The outcome wave function converges to the standard wave function with the increasing number of iteration. Results are verified for the first fifteen states of hydrogen atom.
