<span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>so<MG2443> that<MG2443> you may know<MG1921> the exact<MG803> truth<MG803> about<MG4012> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>things<MG3056> you have been <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>taught<MG2727>. <p class="hdg">John the Baptist’s Birth Foretold</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>In the days<MG2250> of Herod<MG2264>, king<MG935> of Judea<MG2449>, there was a priest<MG2409> named<MG3686> Zechariah<MG2197>, of the division<MG2183> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Abijah<MG7>; and he had a wife<MG1135> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>from the daughters<MG2364> of Aaron<MG2>, and her name<MG3686> was Elizabeth<MG1665>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>They were both<MG297> righteous<MG1342> in<MG1726> the<MG1726> sight<MG1726> of God<MG2316>, walking<MG4198> blamelessly<MG273> in all<MG3956> the commandments<MG1785> and requirements<MG1345> of the Lord<MG2962>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And <i>yet</i> they had<MG1510> no<MG3756> child<MG5043>, because<MG2530> Elizabeth<MG1665> was infertile<MG4723>, and they were both<MG297> advanced<MG4260> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>years<MG2250>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> it happened<MG1096> <i>that</i> while<MG1722> he was performing<MG2407> his priestly<MG2407> service<MG2407> before<MG1725> God<MG2316> in the appointed<MG5010> order<MG5010> of his division<MG2183>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>according<MG2596> to the custom<MG1485> of the priestly<MG2405> office<MG2405>, he was chosen<MG2975> by<MG2975> lot<MG2975> to enter<MG1525> the temple<MG3485> of the Lord<MG2962> and burn<MG2370> incense<MG2370>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the whole<MG3956> multitude<MG4128> of the people<MG2992> were in<MG4336> prayer<MG4336> outside<MG1854> at the hour<MG5610> of the incense<MG2368> offering. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> an angel<MG32a> of the Lord<MG2962> appeared<MG3708> to him, standing<MG2476> to the right<MG1188> of the altar<MG2379> of incense<MG2368>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Zechariah<MG2197> was troubled<MG5015> when he saw<MG3708> <i>the angel,</i> and fear<MG5401> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>gripped<MG1968> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But the angel<MG32a> said<MG3004> to him, “Do not be<MG5399> afraid<MG5399>, Zechariah<MG2197>, for your prayer<MG1162> has been heard<MG1522>, and your wife<MG1135> Elizabeth<MG1665> will bear<MG1080> you a son<MG5207>, and you shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>name<MG2564, 3686> him John<MG2491>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>You will have joy<MG5479> and gladness<MG20>, and many<MG4183> will rejoice<MG5463> over<MG1909> his birth<MG1078>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>For he will be great<MG3173> in<MG1799> the<MG1799> sight<MG1799> of<MG1799> the Lord<MG2962>; and he will drink<MG4095> no<MG3756, 3361> wine<MG3631> or<MG2532> liquor<MG4608>, and he will be filled<MG4092a> with the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>while still<MG2089> in his mother’s<MG3384> womb<MG2836>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And he will turn<MG1994> many<MG4183> of the sons<MG5207> of Israel<MG2474> back<MG1994> to the Lord<MG2962> their God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And <i>it is</i> he <i>who</i> will go<MG4281> <i>as a forerunner</i> before<MG1799> Him in the spirit<MG4151> and power<MG1411> of Elijah<MG2243>, TO TURN<MG1994> THE HEARTS<MG2588> OF FATHERS<MG3962> BACK<MG1994> TO <i>THEIR</i> CHILDREN<MG5043>, and the disobedient<MG545> to the attitude<MG5428> of the righteous<MG1342>, to make<MG2090> ready<MG2090> a people<MG2992> prepared<MG2680> for the Lord<MG2962>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Zechariah<MG2197> said<MG3004> to the angel<MG32a>, “How<MG2596, 5101> will I know<MG1097> this<MG3778>? For I am<MG1510> an old<MG4246> man<MG4246>, and my wife<MG1135> is advanced<MG4260> in her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>years<MG2250>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The angel<MG32a> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to him, “I am<MG1510> Gabriel<MG1043>, who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>stands<MG3936> in<MG1799> the<MG1799> presence<MG1799> of<MG1799> God<MG2316>, and I was sent<MG649> to speak<MG2980> to you and to bring<MG2097> you this<MG3778> good<MG2097> news<MG2097>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And behold<MG2400>, you will be silent<MG4623> and unable<MG3361, 1410> to speak<MG2980> until<MG891> the day<MG2250> when<MG3739> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> take<MG1096> place<MG1096>, because<MG473, 3739> you did not believe<MG4100> my words<MG3056>, which<MG3748> will be fulfilled<MG4137> at their proper<MG2540> time<MG2540>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And <i>meanwhile</i> the people<MG2992> were waiting<MG4328> for<MG4328> Zechariah<MG2197>, and were<MG2296> wondering<MG2296> at his delay<MG5549> in the temple<MG3485>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But when he came<MG1831> out<MG1831>, he was unable<MG3756, 1410> to speak<MG2980> to them; and they realized<MG1921> that he had seen<MG3708> a vision<MG3701> in the temple<MG3485>, and he <i>repeatedly</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>made<MG1269> signs<MG1269> to them, and remained<MG1265> speechless<MG2974>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>When<MG5613> the days<MG2250> of his priestly<MG3009> service<MG3009> were concluded<MG4092a>, he went<MG565> back<MG565> home<MG3624>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> after<MG3326> these<MG3778> days<MG2250> his wife<MG1135> Elizabeth<MG1665> became<MG4815> pregnant<MG4815>, and she kept<MG4032> herself<MG1438> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>in<MG4032> seclusion<MG4032> for five<MG4002> months<MG3376>, saying<MG3004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>“This<MG3779> is<MG3779> the<MG3779> way<MG3779> the Lord<MG2962> has dealt<MG4160> with me in the days<MG2250> when<MG3739> He looked<MG1896> <i>with favor</i> upon<MG1896> <i>me,</i> to take<MG851> away<MG851> my disgrace<MG3681> among<MG1722> people<MG444>.” <p class="hdg">Jesus’ Birth Foretold</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> in the sixth<MG1623> month<MG3376> the angel<MG32a> Gabriel<MG1043> was sent<MG649> from God<MG2316> to a city<MG4172> in<MG649> Galilee<MG1056> named<MG3686> Nazareth<MG3478>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>to a virgin<MG3933> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>betrothed<MG3423> to a man<MG435> whose<MG3739> name<MG3686> was Joseph<MG2501>, of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>descendants<MG3624> of David<MG1160b>; and the virgin’s<MG3933> name<MG3686> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Mary<MG3137>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And coming<MG1525> in<MG1525>, he said<MG3004> to her, “Greetings<MG5463>, favored<MG5487> one! The Lord<MG2962> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span><i>is</i> with you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>But she was very<MG1298> perplexed<MG1298> at <i>this</i> statement<MG3056>, and was pondering<MG1260> what<MG4217> kind<MG4217> of greeting<MG783> this<MG3778> was. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And the angel<MG32a> said<MG3004> to her, “Do not be<MG5399> afraid<MG5399>, Mary<MG3137>, for you have found<MG2147> favor<MG5485> with God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And behold<MG2400>, you will conceive<MG4815> in your womb<MG1064> and give<MG5088> birth<MG5088> to a son<MG5207>, and you shall name<MG2564, 3686> Him Jesus<MG2424>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>He will be great<MG3173> and will be called<MG2564> the Son<MG5207> of the Most<MG5310> High<MG5310>; and the Lord<MG2962> God<MG2316> will give<MG1325> Him the throne<MG2362> of His father<MG3962> David<MG1160b>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>and He will reign<MG936> over<MG1909> the house<MG3624> of Jacob<MG2384> forever<MG165>, and His kingdom<MG932> will have no<MG3756> end<MG5056>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But Mary<MG3137> said<MG3004> to the angel<MG32a>, “How<MG4459> will this<MG3778> be, since<MG1893> I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>am a virgin<MG435, 3756, 1097>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>The angel<MG32a> answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to her, “The Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151> will come<MG1904> upon you, and the power<MG1411> of the Most<MG5310> High<MG5310> will overshadow<MG1982> you; for that reason<MG1352> also<MG2532> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>holy<MG40> Child<MG1080> will be called<MG2564> the Son<MG5207> of God<MG2316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And behold<MG2400>, even<MG2532> your relative<MG4773b> Elizabeth<MG1665> herself<MG846> has conceived<MG4815> a son<MG5207> in her old<MG1094> age<MG1094>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>she who was called<MG2564> infertile<MG4723> is now<MG3778> in her sixth<MG1623> month<MG3376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>For nothing<MG3756, 3956, 4487> will be impossible<MG101> with God<MG2316>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And Mary<MG3137> said<MG3004>, “Behold<MG2400>, the Lord’s<MG2962> bond-servant<MG1401>; may it be done<MG1096> to me according<MG2596> to your word<MG4487>.” And the angel<MG32a> departed<MG565> from her. <p class="hdg">Mary Visits Elizabeth</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>at this<MG3778> time<MG2250> Mary<MG3137> set<MG450> out<MG450> and went<MG4198> in a hurry<MG4710> to the hill<MG3714> country<MG3714>, to a city<MG4172> of Judah<MG2455>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>and she entered<MG1525> the house<MG3624> of Zechariah<MG2197> and greeted<MG782> Elizabeth<MG1665>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>When<MG5613> Elizabeth<MG1665> heard<MG191> Mary’s<MG3137> greeting<MG783>, the baby<MG1025> leaped<MG4640> in her womb<MG2836>, and Elizabeth<MG1665> was filled<MG4092a> with the Holy<MG40> Spirit<MG4151>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And she cried<MG400> out<MG400> with a loud<MG3173> voice<MG2906> and said<MG3004>, “Blessed<MG2127> <i>are</i> you among<MG1722> women<MG1135>, and blessed<MG2127> <i>is</i> the fruit<MG2590> of your womb<MG2836>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>how<MG4159> has it happened to me that the mother<MG3384> of my Lord<MG2962> would come<MG2064> to me? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>For behold<MG2400>, when<MG5613> the sound<MG5456> of your greeting<MG783> reached<MG1096> my ears<MG3775>, the baby<MG1025> leaped<MG4640> in my womb<MG2836> for joy<MG20>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And blessed<MG3107> <i>is</i> she who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>believed<MG4100> that there would be a fulfillment<MG5050> of what had been spoken<MG2980> to her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>by the Lord<MG2962>.” <p class="hdg">Mary’s Song: The Magnificat</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And Mary<MG3137> said<MG3004>: <p class="indent1stline">“My soul<MG5590> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>exalts<MG3170> the Lord<MG2962>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And my about<MG5613> three<MG5140> months<MG3376>, and <i>then</i> returned<MG5290> to her home<MG3624>. <p class="hdg">John the Baptist Is Born</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> the time<MG5550> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aj]</a></span>had come<MG4092a> for Elizabeth<MG1665> to give<MG5088> birth<MG5088>, and she gave<MG1080> birth<MG5088> to a son<MG5207>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/1-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>Her neighbors<MG4040> and her relatives<MG4773a> heard<MG191> that the Lord<MG2962> had
