Assonov</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The purpose of this review was to develop the comprehensive conception of the hippocampus role in the functioning of human memory, based on data obtained by analysis of the latest scientific literature on the topic and develop recommendations for further ways of researches in this topic. The scientific literature of the last 5 years on the role of the hippocampus in memory functioning was analyzed. Based on the proceed literature, we made the next conclusions: 1.) the hippocampus is an unusually important for memory structure with connections, different for different types of memory; 2.) The hippocampus is affected by a variety of substances, most studied now are glucocorticosteroids, whose effect on memory differs depending on the time of onset of action. 3.) The volume of the hippocampus in mental disorders affecting memory is less than normal, which makes it an important diagnostic criterion; 4.) At the moment, various promising methods that can help in the therapy of PTSD, depression, phobias and other disorders associated with memory impairment and based on the knowledge of the hippocampus for the treatment of memory disorders are being developed. Based on these conclusions and data, which was analyzed, we offered the following recommendations: 1.) to implement an examination of the hippocampal function in the tactics of diagnosing mental disorders, which may be accompanied by a violation of his work; 2.) To use the size of the hippocampus as one of the prognostic factors for the severity of the memory-associated disorders and the progress of therapy; 3.) to carefully investigate the difference in the effect of various psychotherapies and pharmacotherapies on the hippocampus to say exactly which of the therapies is the most morphologically reasonable; 4.) to find out how significant the decrease in the hippocampal volume is for the functioning of memory; 5.) to use pathogenetically and morphologically based methods to improve the function of the hippocampus in the treatment of disorders that are different instances of the concept. However, recordings from the rodent hippocampus suggest an important function of these neurons is their ability to discriminate overlapping representations, or pattern separate, a process that may facilitate discrimination of similar events for successful memory. In the current study, we explored whether human hippocampal neurons can also demonstrate the ability to discriminate between overlapping representations and whether this selectivity could be directly related to memory performance. We show that among medial temporal lobe (MTL) neurons, certain populations of neurons are selective for a previously studied (target) image in that they show a significant decrease in firing rate to very similar (lure) images.
