The wilderness, or desert, is a place of testing and reliance on God, as seen in the Israelites' journey. Shepherding symbolizes guidance and care, but here it also implies a lack of settlement and stability. This period serves as a formative time for the new generation, preparing them to enter the Promised Land.
for forty years
The number forty is significant in the Bible, often associated with periods of testing, trial, and judgment. Examples include the forty days and nights of rain during the flood (Genesis 7:12), Moses' forty days on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:18), and Jesus' forty days of fasting in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2). This period represents a complete generation, emphasizing the consequences of the Israelites' lack of faith.
and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness
The suffering of the children is a direct result of the parents' disobedience and lack of trust in God's promises. This reflects the biblical principle that the consequences of sin can affect subsequent generations (Exodus 20:5). The unfaithfulness refers to the Israelites' refusal to enter the Promised Land due to fear, despite God's assurances (Numbers 13-14).
until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness
This phrase underscores the finality of the judgment on the unfaithful generation. The wilderness becomes their grave, a stark reminder of the cost of rebellion against God. It also serves as a purging process, ensuring that only those who trust in God will enter the Promised Land. This foreshadows the ultimate rest and inheritance believers find in Christ, who leads His people into the eternal Promised Land (Hebrews 4:8-10).
Persons / Places / Events
1. The Israelites
The chosen people of God, who were delivered from slavery in Egypt and are now wandering in the wilderness due to their disobedience and lack of faith.

2. The Wilderness
A desolate and challenging environment where the Israelites wandered for forty years as a consequence of their rebellion against God.

3. Moses
The leader of the Israelites, who interceded on their behalf but also witnessed their repeated disobedience.

4. The Promised Land
The land of Canaan, which God promised to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It was not altogether a threat, for it implied that the Lord would be their Shepherd and would provide for their wants in their wanderings. Forty years. This period was made up by counting in the year and a half since the exodus. It was one of those many cases in which the word of God was fulfilled in the meaning and substance of it, but not in the letter. The delay which had already occurred was itself practically due to the same spirit of mutiny which had grown to a head at Kadesh; it was therefore strictly equitable to count it as part of the punishment inflicted (see on Deuteronomy 2:14). And bear your whoredoms. "Whoredom" had been already used (Exodus 34:16) as a synonym for idolatry in its aspect of spiritual unfaithfulness, and there is no reason to depart from that well-marked meaning here. That the Jews were guilty of idolatry in the wilderness is distinctly asserted (cf. Acts 7:42, 43); and these idolatrous practices, carried on no doubt in secret, must have been a sore trial to the generation which grew up amidst them (cf. Joshua 24:14, 23).

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
Your children
וּ֠בְנֵיכֶם (ū·ḇə·nê·ḵem)
Conjunctive waw | Noun -
