A major exception to the rule can be found in the province of Aceh where ethnic separatists were granted the right to form their own political party to contest local elections in return for giving up their armed struggle for independence. In legislative elections held in 2009 the party of the former rebels – the Aceh Party – won a landslide victory. Direct election planed that ethnicity in Medan, North Sumatera was constructed by colonial power in which influence the political participation of the society. We found that Medan mayoral candidate often use the issue of ethnicity. It is a way to get the support of the people. Society did not choose based on the programs offered by mayor candidate. Free education program, or a free ID card issue turns out that it does not compete with "native" issue. There was a perception in the community that the mayors who came from the same ethnic community would give many benefits. Besides that, the first and second rounds of direct election in Medan were about inter-ethnic competition. It is not about religion competition. This study found the endured cleavages are ethnic and aliran (literally, “stream”), which consist of the competing abangan (nominal Muslim) and santri (devout Muslim) cleavages. Both had been “frozen,” or existed latantly, during the New Order, but they revived afterwards. However, the ethnic cleavage arguably has been “melted” faster than the aliran one as the former seems to be more vulnerable to other political appeals. The aliran, in contrast, is somewhat callous due to its complex basis. The results show that the different political backgrounds of the candidates actually create cross-cutting affiliations between Muhammadiyah and NU Muslim society in Kediri City to provide support for Abu and Lilik in the Kediri City regional election. In the local context, political participation is gradually increasing including North Sumatra Province. Election with an open proportional system based on the largest number of votes provided a broad space for each individual including every ethnic group to participate in election. This research aims to explore why the Chinese ethnic candidate competition occurred in this era, how the competition form is and how is the electoral behavior form of Chinese ethnic candidates in the member election of North Sumatra Province House of Representative in 2014 with a case study of North Sumatra 1 Election Region. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data was obtained through interview, literature studies and documentation. The analysis uses qualitative methods and Nvivo 12 Software through interviews, observations and documentation. The results of this study showed that PAN is struggling most in terms of the leader position, PKS experiences intense internal competition, and factionalism in PPP has resulted in the experience of greater welfare motivation. Factionalism in PAN has an impact on the conflict of relatively high structures, but experienced struggle in recording success in 2019 local elections, while the PPP and PKS recorded decreased votes and fewer representative seats as a result of the 2019 elections. This research uses political participation and voter behavior concept to see what underlying the community in determining the choice of their regional head, whether influenced by sociological, psychological or rational aspects. The data collection techniques used were interviews, literature studies and documentation. The results showed that the voting pattern of the Ambaipua Village community could be understood from three approaches, namely sociology, psychology and rational. A sociological approach in which the majority of informants stated that the religious aspect greatly affects who the candidate will be elected, that they will choose a candidate who has the same belief/religion.
