从92年初开始，我县以“加快交通基础设施建设、服务长汀经济”为己任，大力改造等外路，接通断头路，积极发展社会运输。93年至97年共投入资金4．14亿元，全面完成境内 319国道改造74.5公里。97年至2000年，投入资金3755万元，完成通乡公路中面黑色化125．4公里，投入资金5612．5万元，开通49个行政村通村公路352公里及41个300人以上自然村通村公路273．2公里、8个革命基点村51公里。</P><P>　　2000年至2002年，投入资金2000万元，做好南环路前期各项工作及汀江大桥基础建设，投入资金956万元，共铺设通村水泥路面176公里。十年来，公路建设累计投资6亿2723万元，是建国后到91年42年间公路建设投资总和的8倍，新增公路里程820．8公里，桥梁39座2675米。十年公路建设辉煌成就，结束了长汀无二级公路的历史，十年中，实现了全县所有行政村及300人以上自然村村村通公路，基本实现了所有通乡公路路面黑色化。截止目前，全县拥有各级公路 1879．36公里，其中：国道74．5公里，省道82．26公里，县道284．72公里，等外路1318．54公里，专用公路119．34公里，公路密度为0．61公里/平方公里。公路交通基础设施完善以后，全县运输经济和运输业也得到很大发展。目前，全县拥有机动车（摩托车除外）共1316辆，其中拥有营运货车393辆，客车150辆，拖拉机121辆，其它机动车385辆。社会公（私）用小车267辆，比92年增长67％。全县交通网络四通八达，共开辟客运线路52条，车船维修、搬运装卸、货运配戴、货物代理等运输服务行业逐步配套。
