<p>　　上周，嚴歌苓去了廈門大學，她的祖父嚴恩椿先生曾經任教的學府。她創作《陸犯焉識》時，就曾首次到廈大，查閱祖父當年的資料，陸焉識的年輕時代，就有她祖父的影子。今年再到廈大，她參觀了校史館，追蹤祖父在這裏留下的影蹤。</p><p>　　嚴恩椿出生於上海寶山的書香世家，二十歲即以第一名成績畢業於滬江大學，與徐志摩是校友，曾為其贈詩《獨坐長歌寄徐志摩》。嚴先生留校任教，上海商務印書館出版了他撰寫的《家庭進化論》，分十二篇章分析了中國的家庭問題，根據當時歐美家庭現狀對新家庭組織進行探討，是我國最早的家庭問題研究論著。一九一九年，嚴恩椿留學美國華盛頓大學讀政治學，獲得哲學博士後回國，他先後在北京大學、復旦大學、光華大學、廈門大學教授英文學、政治學。他筆耕不輟，一九三三年，商務印書館出版了他的譯著《社會主義運動》，他在序言中寫道：「然在今後十年或二十年間，若國事而有改進之希望者，則政治必走上社會主義之途徑，此無可置疑者也。」著名數學家丘成桐的父親丘鎮英先生畢業於廈門大學，其畢業論文《清代中樞政制探討》的指導老師便是嚴恩椿先生，丘鎮英在書集中念念不忘恩師教誨。</p><p>　　嚴恩椿先生去世時年僅四十一歲，嚴歌苓是從姑媽與父親的講述中，逐漸構建神秘而偉大的祖父形象。她追隨祖父足跡赴美留學於華盛頓大學。祖父當年留學回國的抱負是想當外交官，學以致用，但當時民國政府的腐敗，讓他秉持清高人格、走進校園教書育人。嚴恩椿曾翻譯了英國小說《黛斯姑娘》，現譯名為《德伯家的苔絲》，這部文學名著最早的中文譯本，或是祖父與嚴歌苓在文學上的對話，跨越了時空。</p>
