This year’s World Press Trends study makes for a sobering read after the optimism of our previous report. The mood in the industry has changed, and publishers find themselves in a more unpredictable business environment due to a number of challenges, including high levels of inflation, rising paper and print costs, as well as ongoing changes to advertising markets. The change in business sentiment is one of the main findings of the new World Press Trends Outlook report. As in the previous years, the analysis is based on an online survey distributed to industry leaders. 167 news executives from 62 countries took part in the survey in Fall 2022 – a big thank you to them for sharing their insights, results and strategies. WAN-IFRA also works with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Zenith for key performance indicators (global revenues and circulation). For audience insights, we work with analytics specialist Chartbeat. There are a couple of ways to look at that: 1) you could say, as most analysts tend to do, that inertia haunts our industry; or 2) our industry has been developing its new business intensively and adapting to change internally. The answer is probably somewhere in between. But among the numerous findings of this year's World News Publishers Outlook, one stood out for all of us that is telling: When asked, "What is the single most important risk to your news organisation's future success?", the largest number of executives in our study (26 percent) answered: their organisation's reluctance to innovate. Not the challenges of finding new business models (which isn't that far off at 24%), nor Google and Facebook gobbling up all their ad revenue, nor a lack of trust from their readers, but that inertia to innovate. Of course all those other challenges play a major role and an impetus to innovate, but summing up the will and the strategy to "get moving" is apparently what concerns many publishing executives across the globe. But that is just one of the many insightful findings from our survey and the analyses that François and his colleague, Dr. Coral Milburn-Curtis of the Innovation Research Group, provide that can help publishers to benchmark where their activities stand and should be headed. So, just how are news media managers tackling the challenge? To find answers, the Innovation Research Group and WAN-IFRA again surveyed executives at member organisations in 10 languages. The Big Picture Optimism: More than eight of 10 (81.8%) of our sample told us that they were optimistic about their company's prospects for the year ahead. That number dropped slightly to 78.8% of our sample when survey participants were asked about their projected confidence levels for the state of their business in three years' time. This positive outlook is global: There are some differences in optimism levels, not least, between developed and developing economies. However, overwhelmingly, respondents across the globe are upbeat about the current and future state of their industry. Respondents in developed economies tend to be more optimistic about the future: Nearly nine in 10 (87%) of survey participants in developed markets have a positive view of the next 12 months, compared to three-quarters of respondents (76.5%) in developing economies. Known unknowns: Confidence can be a fickle beast and the impact of inflation, the conflict in Ukraine and other factors since our survey took place may mean that these confidence levels have been dented in recents weeks and months. The Move to Digital Organisational transformation is well underway: Nearly half of participants (49.1%) described the level of digital transformation at their company as "very advanced" (12.7%) or "advanced" (36.4%). Only 10.9% indicated these efforts are "nascent" or "seriously lagging." There remains plenty of work to be done: The largest single group, 40% of responses, indicated such activity was "emerging," recognising that while there has been progress, digital transformation efforts are far from complete. Digital revenue is the biggest source of income growth: From the perspective of our sample, respondents cite digital sources-advertising (+16.5%) and readership (+14.3%)-as the areas witnessing the biggest growth in revenue over the last year. In contrast, print revenues-although important to overall income-are contracting with revenues from print readership (-2.6%) and advertising (-8.7%) both shrinking. Revenues Respondents expect revenues to grow in 2022: This is in contrast to 2021, where developed countries saw a quick bounceback from the financial challenges of 2020. Across our sample in developed countries revenues were up 21.8% in the past year. We offer no guidelines to those who contribute to the forum, because we want to hear about what is in actual fact on their minds. And, apart from this modest introduction, we make no effort to coalesce their thoughts into a tidy whole. University presses come in all shapes and sizes, and so too their concerns, interests, and goals. This said, every year we are modestly surprised (to horn in on a strand in one of the contributions below) all over again to realize that university pressestheir sizes, geographical locations, and ages notwithstanding-remain very much the same: all are committed to transmitting the scholarly word, almost all are at least dabbling in digital publishing (and many are fully immersed), and they are struggling with the economics of their enterprises. Of course matters economic have been very much at the forefront of university presses' concerns for several decades; one might even say they are pretty much experts on operating on (without?) a shoestring. So perhaps the dark and stormy economic night in which the United States-and world-finds itself in 2009 is not as scary to university presses as it is to the rest of us. Indeed, perhaps university presses could view these 'troubling times' as an opportunity, as one of the forum contributors does. This year's forum comprises contributions from two old-timers and two youngsters. Yale University Press and University of Chicago Press have both been around for more than a century; Trinity University Press was founded only seven years ago, and Rice University Press was reborn after a ten-year hiatus.
