China's participation in Arctic exploration was determined by the second and third articles of the treaty, according to which the country could conduct scientific activities in the adjacent waters of Svalbard. The first studies of the New China began in the 50s of the twentieth century. The first scientific projects on Arctic exploration began in the 80s of the twentieth century. During these years, the "National Committee of the People's Republic of China for Arctic Expeditions" and the "Institute of Polar Research" in Shanghai were established. The beginning of Deng Xiaoping's policy of openness and reform has opened a new page in China's scientific research of the Arctic. Since the 90s, the first Chinese scientific programs have been developed with foreign partners. The Chinese Academy of Sciences and its subordinate scientific institutions are actively involved in scientific activities: the Institute of Aerophysics, the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources, the Institute of Oceanology, etc. An important event for the development of scientific research in the Arctic was China's entry into the Arctic Council in 2013 as an observer. By 2018, China had conducted nine Arctic expeditions, their purpose was to study the melting of ice and its effects on the world's climate system, as well as the impact of the Arctic climate on China and the presence of plastic waste in the Arctic was monitored. At the beginning of the new millennium, China considers the Arctic as the most important region of a geopolitical and geostrategic nature, for its further logistical and economic development. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Arctic" title="Arctic">Arctic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=China" title=" China"> China</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=history%20of%20Arctic%20research" title=" history of Arctic research"> history of Arctic research</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arctic%20science" title=" arctic science"> arctic science</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20scientific%20research%20in%20the%20Arctic" title=" Chinese scientific research in the Arctic"> Chinese scientific research in the Arctic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=scientific%20expeditions" title=" scientific expeditions"> scientific expeditions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182520/chinas-scientific-research-of-the-arctic-historical-aspect" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182520.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">51</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26442</span> Sino-Russian Cooperation in the Arctic (Based on the Materials of the Russian Press)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cui%20Long%20%28Allen%29">Cui Long (Allen)</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The role of the Arctic in world politics and international relations has increased significantly over the past decades. With its large natural resources, the Arctic region has important geopolitical, strategic, and economic significance. All this determines the interest in it not only of the Arctic states but also of states located far from the Arctic. One of these states is the People's Republic of China. Relations between China and Russia in recent decades have been built on the basis of strategic partnership. Joint projects in the Arctic have become the most important priority area of this partnership. These are projects in the transport and energy fields. A large number of works by Russian scientists are devoted to the Sino-Russian Arctic cooperation. Most authors consider cooperation as a guarantee of stability for China and Russia in a globalized world. However, there are authors who believe that there are separate contradictions in the relations between the Arctic and non-Arctic countries. In their opinion, China sometimes acts as a competitor, and its activities become expansionist. In general, according to the Russian authors, Sino-Russian cooperation is mutually beneficial and is under development. China and Russia have a long way to go in the issue of sustainable development of the Arctic. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=People%E2%80%99s%20Republic%20of%20China" title="People’s Republic of China">People’s Republic of China</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Russian%20Federation" title=" Russian Federation"> Russian Federation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Arctic" title=" Arctic"> Arctic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=historiography" title=" historiography"> historiography</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182438/sino-russian-cooperation-in-the-arctic-based-on-the-materials-of-the-russian-press" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182438.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">67</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26441</span> Opening of North Sea Route and Geopolitics in Arctic: Impact and Possibilities of Route</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikkey%20Keshri">Nikkey Keshri</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Arctic is a polar region located at the north of the earth. This consists of the Arctic Ocean and other parts of Canada, Russia, the United States, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland. Arctic has vast natural resources which are exploited with modern technology, and the economic opening up of Russia has given new opportunities. All these states have connected with the Arctic region for economic activities and this effect the region ecology. The pollution problem is a serious threat to the people health living around pollution sources. Due to the prevailing worldwide sea and air currents, the Arctic area is the fallout region for long-range transport pollutants, and in some places the concentrations exceed the levels of densely populated urban areas. The Arctic is especially vulnerable to the effects of global warming, as has become apparent in the melting sea ice in recent years. Climate models predict much greater warming in the Arctic than the global average, resulting in significant international attention to the region. The global warming has an adverse impact on the climate, indigenous people, wildlife, and infrastructure. However, there are several opportunities that have emerged in the form of shipping routes, resources, and new territories. The shipping route through the Arctic is a reality and is currently navigable for a few weeks during summers. There are large deposits of oil and gas, minerals and fish and the surrounding countries with Arctic coastlines are becoming quite assertive about exercising their sovereignty over the newfound wealth. The main part of the research is that how the opening of Northern Sea Route is providing opportunities or problem in the Arctic and it is becoming geopolitically important. It focuses on the interest Arctic and non Arctic states, their present and anticipated global geopolitical aims. The Northern Sea Route might open up due to climate changes and that Iceland might benefit or has an impact from the situation. Efforts will be made to answer the research question: ‘Whether Opening of North Sea Route is providing opportunities or becoming a risk for Arctic region?’ Every research has a structure which usually called design. In this research, both Qualitative and Quantitative method is used in terms of various literature, maps, pie- charts, etc to find out the answer for the research question. The aim of this research is to find out the impact of Opening of North Sea Route over Arctic region and how this make arctic geopolitically important. The aim behind this research is to find out the impact of climate change and how the particular geographical area is being affected. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title="climate change">climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geopolitics" title=" geopolitics"> geopolitics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=international%20relation" title=" international relation"> international relation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Northern%20Sea%20Route" title=" Northern Sea Route"> Northern Sea Route</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56264/opening-of-north-sea-route-and-geopolitics-in-arctic-impact-and-possibilities-of-route" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56264.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">258</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26440</span> Reader Reception of Cultural Context for Chinese Translation of Scientific and Technical Discourse: An Empirical Study </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caiwen%20Wang">Caiwen Wang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yuling%20Liu"> Yuling Liu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Scientific and technical discourse is non-literary, and so it is often regarded as merely informative, free of the cultural context of both the source and the target language. Thus it is supposed that translators of sci-tech texts do not need to consider cultural factors in the translation process as readers only care for the information conveyed. This paper takes a different standpoint and shows that cultural context plays an important part in scientific and technical texts and thereafter in bridging the gap between different cultural communities of readers. The paper argues that the common cultural context for members of the same cultural community, such as morals, customs, and values, also underpins the sci-tech discourse of various text types, and therefore may pose difficulties for readers of a different cultural community if this is re-presented or translated literally. The research hypothesises that depending on how it is re-presented or translated; cultural context can either encourage or discourage readers’ reading experience and subsequently their interest to read and use translation texts. Drawing upon the Reception Theory by Hans Robert Jauss, the research investigates the relationship between cultural context and scientific and technical translation from English to Chinese. Citing 55 examples of sci-tech translations from magazines, newspapers and the website of Shell, a major international oil and gas company, the research shows that the source texts for these 55 cases all have bearing on the source cultural context, and translators will need to address this in the translation process instead of doing literal translation to be merely correct. The research then interviews 15 research subjects for their views of the translations. By assessing readers’ reception and perception of translated Chinese sci-tech discourse, the research concludes that cultural context contributes to the quality of scientific and technical translation in an important way and then discusses the implications of the findings for training scientific and technical translators. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20translation" title="Chinese translation">Chinese translation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20context" title=" cultural context"> cultural context</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reception%20theory" title=" reception theory"> reception theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=scientific%20and%20technical%20texts" title=" scientific and technical texts"> scientific and technical texts</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61821/reader-reception-of-cultural-context-for-chinese-translation-of-scientific-and-technical-discourse-an-empirical-study" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61821.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">334</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26439</span> Cultural Understanding in Chinese Language Education for Foreigners: A Quest for Better Integration</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Linhan%20Sun">Linhan Sun</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> With the gradual strengthening of China's economic development, more and more people around the world are learning Chinese due to economic and trade needs, which has also promoted the research related to Chinese language education for foreigners. Because the Chinese language system is different from the Western language system, learning Chinese is not easy for many learners. In addition, language learning cannot be separated from the learning and understanding of culture. How to integrate cultural learning into the curriculum of Chinese language education for foreigners is the focus of this study. Through a semi-structured in-depth interview method, 15 foreigners who have studied or are studying Chinese participated in this study. This study found that cultural learning and Chinese as a foreign language are relatively disconnected. In other words, learners were able to acquire a certain degree of knowledge of the Chinese language through textbooks or courses but did not gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20language%20education" title="Chinese language education">Chinese language education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20culture" title=" Chinese culture"> Chinese culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=qualitative%20methods" title=" qualitative methods"> qualitative methods</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intercultural%20communication" title=" intercultural communication"> intercultural communication</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/149458/cultural-understanding-in-chinese-language-education-for-foreigners-a-quest-for-better-integration" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/149458.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">170</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26438</span> NMR-Based Metabolomics Reveals Dietary Effects in Liver Extracts of Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) Fed Different Levels of Starch</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rani%20Abro">Rani Abro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Ata%20Moazzami"> Ali Ata Moazzami</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Erik%20Lindberg"> Jan Erik Lindberg</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Torbj%C3%B6rn%20Lundh"> Torbjörn Lundh</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The effect of dietary starch level on liver metabolism in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) was studied using 1H-NMR based metabolomics. Fingerlings were fed iso-nitrogenous diets containing 0, 10 and 20 % starch for two months before liver samples were collected for metabolite analysis. Metabolite profiling was performed using 600 MHz NMR Chenomx software. In total, 48 metabolites were profiled in liver extracts from both fish species. Following the profiling, principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLC-DA) were performed. These revealed that differences in the concentration of significant metabolites were correlated to the dietary starch level in both species. The most prominent difference in metabolic response to starch feeding between the omnivorous tilapia and the carnivorous Arctic charr was an indication of higher anaerobic metabolism in Arctic charr. The data also indicated that amino acid and pyrimidine metabolism was higher in Artic charr than in tilapia. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arctic%20charr" title="arctic charr">arctic charr</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolomics" title=" metabolomics"> metabolomics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=starch" title=" starch"> starch</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tilapia" title=" tilapia "> tilapia </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24696/nmr-based-metabolomics-reveals-dietary-effects-in-liver-extracts-of-arctic-charr-salvelinus-alpinus-and-tilapia-oreochromis-mossambicus-fed-different-levels-of-starch" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24696.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">457</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26437</span> Development of Entrepreneurship in Industry on the Basis of Regulation of Transnational Production Chains in the Russian Arctic</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=E.%20N.%20Vetrova">E. Entrepreneurship in industry makes it possible to increase the added value that is formed in production chains and to decrease dependence on import. Under the current circumstances, when sanctions are being imposed, this is especially relevant for Russia and for the realization of projects in the Russian Arctic. However, development of entrepreneurship in industry requires an enlightened state policy. The purpose of the research is elaboration of recommendations for improving economic effectiveness of the realization of the Arctic projects on the basis of conceptual proposals for the development of entrepreneurship in industry. The paper presents the studies of the extractive industry role in the Russian economy and proves its raw material character. The analysis of production chains in industry on the basis of the conception of the added value global chains demonstrated a low added value formed by Russian companies. The study of changes in the structure of economy based on systemic, statistical and comparative analyses revealed no positive changes in the structure of economy over the period under consideration. This is a manifestation of ineffectiveness of the Russian industrial policy in general and within the Arctic region in particular. The authors identified the problems information and implementation of the state industrial policy in the Arctic region and in the development of national entrepreneurship, analyzed the shortcomings of the current state policy in the sphere of the Russian industry. On the basis of the conducted studies, the authors formulated conceptual approaches to change the state policy in the Arctic. The basic idea of the authors is to substantiate the focus of the state regulation on the development of entrepreneurship in industry in the process of the Russian Arctic exploration. At the same time another problem is solved&ndash;that of the development of the manufacturing industry in the southern regions of the northwestern part of Russia. The criterion of effectiveness in this case is the economic effectiveness. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=entrepreneurship%20in%20industry" title="entrepreneurship in industry">entrepreneurship in industry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=global%20chains%20of%20the%20added%20value" title=" global chains of the added value"> global chains of the added value</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=government%20regulation" title=" government regulation"> government regulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industrial%20policies" title=" industrial policies"> industrial policies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=production%20chains%20in%20the%20arctic%20region" title=" production chains in the arctic region"> production chains in the arctic region</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=economic%20effectiveness" title=" economic effectiveness"> economic effectiveness</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41149/development-of-entrepreneurship-in-industry-on-the-basis-of-regulation-of-transnational-production-chains-in-the-russian-arctic" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41149.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">386</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26436</span> Fort Conger: A Virtual Museum and Virtual Interactive World for Exploring Science in the 19th Century</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Richard%20Levy">Richard Levy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Dawson"> Peter Dawson</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Ft. Our research project “From Science to Survival: Using Virtual Exhibits to Communicate the Significance of Polar Heritage Sites in the Canadian Arctic” focused on the creation of a virtual museum website dedicated to one of the most important polar heritage site in the Canadian Arctic. This website was developed under a grant from Virtual Museum of Canada and enables visitors to explore the fort’s site from 1875 to the present, http://fortconger.org. Heritage sites are often viewed as static places. A goal of this project was to present the change that occurred over time as each new group of explorers adapted the site to their needs. The site was first visited by British explorer George Nares in 1875 – 76. Only later did the United States government select this site for the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition (1881-84) with research to be conducted under the FIPY (1882 – 83). Still later Robert Peary and Matthew Henson attempted to reach the North Pole from Ft. Conger in 1899, 1905 and 1908. A central focus of this research is on the virtual reconstruction of the Ft. Conger. In the summer of 2010, a Zoller+Fröhlich Imager 5006i and Minolta Vivid 910 laser scanner were used to scan terrain and artifacts. Once the scanning was completed, the point clouds were registered and edited to form the basis of a virtual reconstruction. A goal of this project has been to allow visitors to step back in time and explore the interior of these buildings with all of its artifacts. Links to text, historic documents, animations, panorama images, computer games and virtual labs provide explanations of how science was conducted during the 19th century. A major feature of this virtual world is the timeline. Visitors to the website can begin to explore the site when George Nares, in his ship the HMS Discovery, appeared in the harbor in 1875. With the emergence of Lt Greely’s expedition in 1881, we can track the progress made in establishing a scientific outpost. Still later in 1901, with Peary’s presence, the site is transformed again, with the huts having been built from materials salvaged from Greely’s main building. Still later in 2010, we can visit the site during its present state of deterioration and learn about the laser scanning technology which was used to document the site. The Science and Survival at Fort Conger project represents one of the first attempts to use virtual worlds to communicate the historical and scientific significance of polar heritage sites where opportunities for first-hand visitor experiences are not possible because of remote location. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=3D%20imaging" title="3D imaging">3D imaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multimedia" title=" multimedia"> multimedia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virtual%20reality" title=" virtual reality"> virtual reality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arctic" title=" arctic"> arctic</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64303/fort-conger-a-virtual-museum-and-virtual-interactive-world-for-exploring-science-in-the-19th-century" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/64303.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">420</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26435</span> Innovative Pictogram Chinese Characters Representation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J.%20H.%20Low">J. This research contributes seeks to bridge this gap by investigating the micro-level language ideologies embedded in the Chinese complementary schools in the Republic of Ireland. Informed by Ruíz’s (1984) metaphorical representations of language, 11 Chinese complementary schools’ websites were analysed as discursive texts that signal the language policy and ideology to prospective learners and parents were analysed. The results of the analysis suggest that a move from a portrayal of Chinese as linked to student heritage identity, to the commodification of linguistic and cultural diversity, is evident. It denotes the growing commodifying ideology among the Chinese complementary schools in the Republic of Ireland. The changing profile of the complementary school, from serving an ethnical community to teaching Chinese as a foreign language for the wider community, indicates the possibility of creating the a positive synergy between the Complementary school and the mainstream education. This study contributes to the wider discussions of language ideology and language planning, with regards to modern language learning and heritage language maintenance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20Chinese%20language%3B" title="the Chinese language;">the Chinese language;</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20as%20heritage%20language" title="Chinese as heritage language">Chinese as heritage language</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20as%20foreign%20language" title="Chinese as foreign language">Chinese as foreign language</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20community%20schools" title="Chinese community schools">Chinese community schools</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/149725/commodification-of-the-chinese-language-investigating-language-ideology-in-the-chinese-complementary-schools-online-discourse" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/149725.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">135</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26431</span> A Corpus Output Error Analysis of Chinese L2 Learners From America, Myanmar, and Singapore</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Qiao-Yu%20Warren%20Cai">Qiao-Yu Warren Cai</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Due to the rise of big data, building corpora and using them to analyze ChineseL2 learners’ language output has become a trend. Various empirical research has been conducted using Chinese corpora built by different academic institutes. However, most of the research analyzed the data in the Chinese corpora usingcorpus-based qualitative content analysis with descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics can be used to make summations about the subjects or samples that research has actually measured to describe the numerical data, but the collected data cannot be generalized to the population. Comte, a Frenchpositivist, has argued since the 19th century that human beings’ knowledge, whether the discipline is humanistic and social science or natural science, should be verified in a scientific way to construct a universal theory to explain the truth and human beings behaviors. Inferential statistics, able to make judgments of the probability of a difference observed between groups being dependable or caused by chance (Free Geography Notes, 2015)and to infer from the subjects or examples what the population might think or behave, is just the right method to support Comte’s argument in the field of TCSOL. Also, inferential statistics is a core of quantitative research, but little research has been conducted by combing corpora with inferential statistics. Little research analyzes the differences in Chinese L2 learners’ language corpus output errors by using theOne-way ANOVA so that the findings of previous research are limited to inferring the population's Chinese errors according to the given samples’ Chinese corpora. To fill this knowledge gap in the professional development of Taiwanese TCSOL, the present study aims to utilize the One-way ANOVA to analyze corpus output errors of Chinese L2 learners from America, Myanmar, and Singapore. The results show that no significant difference exists in ‘shì (是) sentence’ and word order errors, but compared with Americans and Singaporeans, it is significantly easier for Myanmar to have ‘sentence blends.’ Based on the above results, the present study provides an instructional approach and contributes to further exploration of how Chinese L2 learners can have (and use) learning strategies to lower errors. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20corpus" title="Chinese corpus">Chinese corpus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=error%20analysis" title=" error analysis"> error analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=one-way%20analysis%20of%20variance" title=" one-way analysis of variance"> one-way analysis of variance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20L2%20learners" title=" Chinese L2 learners"> Chinese L2 learners</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Americans" title=" Americans"> Americans</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=myanmar" title=" myanmar"> myanmar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Singaporeans" title=" Singaporeans"> Singaporeans</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154806/a-corpus-output-error-analysis-of-chinese-l2-learners-from-america-myanmar-and-singapore" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154806.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">106</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26430</span> Language Learning Strategies of Chinese Students at Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University in Thailand </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gunniga%20Anugkakul">Gunniga Anugkakul</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Suwaree%20Yordchim"> Suwaree Yordchim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The objectives were to study language learning strategies (LLSs) employed by Chinese students, and the frequency of LLSs they used, and examine the relationship between the use of LLSs and gender. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) by Oxford was administered to thirty-six Chinese students at Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University in Thailand. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Three useful findings were found on the use of LLSs reported by Chinese students. First, Chinese students used overall LLSs at a high level. Second, among the six strategy groups, Chinese students employed compensation strategy most frequently and memory strategy least frequently. Third, the research results also revealed that gender had significant effect on Chinese Student’s use of overall LLSs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=English%20language" title="English language">English language</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=language%20learning%20strategy" title=" language learning strategy"> language learning strategy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20students" title=" Chinese students"> Chinese students</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compensation%20strategy" title=" compensation strategy"> compensation strategy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12405/language-learning-strategies-of-chinese-students-at-suan-sunandha-rajabhat-university-in-thailand" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12405.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">678</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26429</span> Target Training on Chinese as a Tonal Language for Better Communication</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Qi%20Wang">Qi Wang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Accurate pronunciation is the first condition of communication. This paper proposes pragmatics as a viable solution. There is also a lack of research exploring the evolving usage patterns of 1PPs within the historical context of Chinese language use. Such research can help us comprehend the changes and developments of these linguistic elements. To fill these research gaps, we use the diachronic pragmatics approach to contrast the functions of Chinese 1PPs in three representative texts from three different historical periods: The Analects (The Spring and Autumn Period), The Grand Scribe’s Records (Grand Records) (Qin and Han Period), and A New Account of Tales of the World (New Account) (The Wei, Jin and Southern and Northern Period). The 1PPs of these texts are manually identified and classified according to the pragmatic functions in the given contexts to observe their historical changes, understand the factors that contribute to these changes, and provide possible answers to the development of how wo became the only 1PP in today’s spoken Mandarin. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20language" title="Chinese language">Chinese language</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=classical%20Chinese" title=" classical Chinese"> classical Chinese</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=historical%20linguistics" title=" historical linguistics"> historical linguistics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pragmatics" title=" pragmatics"> pragmatics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=first-person%20pronouns" title=" first-person pronouns"> first-person pronouns</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/189023/first-person-pronoun-pragmatic-functions-in-three-historical-chinese-texts" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/189023.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">23</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26427</span> Numerical Simulation of the Flowing of Ice Slurry in Seawater Pipe of Polar Ships</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Li%20Xu">Li Xu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Huanbao%20Jiang"> Huanbao Jiang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zhenfei%20Huang"> Zhenfei Huang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lailai%20Zhang"> Lailai Zhang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In recent years, as global warming, the sea-ice extent of North Arctic undergoes an evident decrease and Arctic channel has attracted the attention of shipping industry. Ice crystals existing in the seawater of Arctic channel which enter the seawater system of the ship with the seawater were found blocking the seawater pipe. The appearance of cooler paralysis, auxiliary machine error and even ship power system paralysis may be happened if seriously. In order to reduce the effect of high temperature in auxiliary equipment, seawater system will use external ice-water to participate in the cooling cycle and achieve the state of its flow. The distribution of ice crystals in seawater pipe can be achieved. As the ice slurry system is solid liquid two-phase system, the flow process of ice-water mixture is very complex and diverse. In this paper, the flow process in seawater pipe of ice slurry is simulated with fluid dynamics simulation software based on k-&epsilon; turbulence model. As the ice packing fraction is a key factor effecting the distribution of ice crystals, the influence of ice packing fraction on the flowing process of ice slurry is analyzed. In this work, the simulation results show that as the ice packing fraction is relatively large, the distribution of ice crystals is uneven in the flowing process of the seawater which has such disadvantage as increase the possibility of blocking, that will provide scientific forecasting methods for the forming of ice block in seawater piping system. It has important significance for the reliability of the operating of polar ships in the future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ice%20slurry" title="ice slurry">ice slurry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seawater%20pipe" title=" seawater pipe"> seawater pipe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ice%20packing%20fraction" title=" ice packing fraction"> ice packing fraction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=numerical%20simulation" title=" numerical simulation"> numerical simulation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47553/numerical-simulation-of-the-flowing-of-ice-slurry-in-seawater-pipe-of-polar-ships" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47553.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">367</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26426</span> Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment for Coronary Heart Disease: a Meta-Analysis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yuxi%20Wang">Yuxi Wang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xuan%20Gao"> Xuan Gao</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Traditional Chinese medicine has been used in the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD) for centuries, and in recent years, the research data on the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine through clinical trials has gradually increased to explore its real efficacy and internal pharmacology. Further research is needed to gain a greater understanding of the support needs of caregivers caring for a relative living with dementia from the Chinese background. Dementia care and caregivers in Chinese communities are less investigated. The study is a case study of two Chinese community centers and one housing support service. Semi-structured one-to-one interviews and a pilot questionnaire were used as the methods for the study. A toolkit will also be created as a document that provides guidance and signposting to health and social care services for Chinese communities. The findings identified three main themes. Caregivers do not receive any formal support from the UK health and social services, and they felt they would have benefited from getting advice on what support they could access. Furthermore, the data also identified that Chinese organisations do not have the knowledge of dementia, to be able to support those living with dementia and their families. Also, people living with dementia and their families rarely present to Chinese organisations and UK health and social care services, meaning they are not receiving the support they are entitled to or need. Additionally, the community center would like to see workshops/courses around dementia for people from Chinese backgrounds. The study concludes that people from Chinese cultural backgrounds do not have sufficient access to support from UK health and social care services. More information needs to be published that will benefit Chinese communities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese" title="Chinese">Chinese</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20organisations" title=" Chinese organisations"> Chinese organisations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dementia" title=" Dementia"> Dementia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=family%20caregivers" title=" family caregivers"> family caregivers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20care" title=" social care"> social care</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163289/understanding-of-chinese-organisations-approach-to-dementia-a-case-study-of-two-community-centres-and-one-housing-support-service-in-the-uk" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163289.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">122</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26424</span> Quantification of NDVI Variation within the Major Plant Formations in Nunavik</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Gaspard">Anna Gaspard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=St%C3%A9phane%20Boudreau"> Stéphane Boudreau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martin%20Simard"> Martin Simard</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Altered temperature and precipitation regimes associated with climate change generally result in improved conditions for plant growth. For Arctic and sub-Arctic ecosystems, this new climatic context favours an increase in primary productivity, a phenomenon often referred to as "greening". The development of an erect shrub cover has been identified as the main driver of Arctic greening. Although this phenomenon has been widely documented at the circumpolar scale, little information is available at the scale of plant communities, the basic unit of the Arctic, and sub-Arctic landscape mosaic. The objective of this study is to quantify the variation of NDVI within the different plant communities of Nunavik, which will allow us to identify the plant formations that contribute the most to the increase in productivity observed in this territory. To do so, the variation of NDVI extracted from Landsat images for the period 1984 to 2020 was quantified. From the Landsat scenes, annual summer NDVI mosaics with a resolution of 30 m were generated. The ecological mapping of Northern Quebec vegetation was then overlaid on the time series of NDVI maps to calculate the average NDVI per vegetation polygon for each year. Our results show that NDVI increases are more important for the bioclimatic domains of forest tundra and erect shrub tundra, and shrubby formations. Surface deposits, variations in mean annual temperature, and variations in winter precipitation are involved in NDVI variations. This study has thus allowed us to quantify changes in Nunavik's vegetation communities, using fine spatial resolution satellite imagery data. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title="climate change">climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=latitudinal%20gradient" title=" latitudinal gradient"> latitudinal gradient</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plant%20communities" title=" plant communities"> plant communities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=productivity" title=" productivity"> productivity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/145542/quantification-of-ndvi-variation-within-the-major-plant-formations-in-nunavik" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/145542.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">182</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26423</span> Chinese Language Teaching as a Second Language: Immersion Teaching</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lee%20Bih%20Ni">Lee Bih Ni</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kiu%20Su%20Na"> Kiu Su Na</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper discusses the Chinese Language Teaching as a Second Language by focusing on Immersion Teaching. Researchers used narrative literature review to describe the current states of both art and science in focused areas of inquiry. Immersion teaching comes with a standard that teachers must reliably meet. Chinese language-immersion instruction consists of language and content lessons, including functional usage of the language, academic language, authentic language, and correct Chinese sociocultural language. Researchers used narrative literature reviews to build a scientific knowledge base. Researchers collected all the important points of discussion, and put them here with reference to the specific field where this paper is originally based on. The findings show that Chinese Language in immersion teaching is not like standard foreign language classroom; immersion setting provides more opportunities to teach students colloquial language than academic. Immersion techniques also introduce a language’s cultural and social contexts in a meaningful and memorable way. It is particularly important that immersion teachers connect classwork with real-life experiences. Immersion also includes more elements of discovery and inquiry based learning than do other kinds of instructional practices. Students are always and consistently interpreted the conclusions and context clues. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=a%20second%20language" title="a second language">a second language</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20language%20teaching" title=" Chinese language teaching"> Chinese language teaching</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=immersion%20teaching" title=" immersion teaching"> immersion teaching</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=instructional%20strategies" title=" instructional strategies"> instructional strategies</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38026/chinese-language-teaching-as-a-second-language-immersion-teaching" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38026.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">452</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26422</span> Changes of First-Person Pronoun Pragmatic Functions in Three Historical Chinese Texts</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cher%20Leng%20Lee">Cher Leng Lee</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The existence of multiple first-person pronouns (1PPs) in classical Chinese is an issue that has not been resolved despite linguists using the grammatical perspective. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=historical" title="historical">historical</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese" title=" Chinese"> Chinese</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pronouns" title=" pronouns"> pronouns</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pragmatics" title=" pragmatics"> pragmatics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184005/changes-of-first-person-pronoun-pragmatic-functions-in-three-historical-chinese-texts" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184005.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">54</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26421</span> Translating Discourse Organization Structures Used in Chinese and English Scientific and Engineering Writings</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ming%20Qian">Ming Qian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Davis%20Qian"> Davis Qian</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study compares the different organization structures of Chinese and English writing discourses in the engineering and scientific fields, and recommends approaches for translators to convert the organization structures properly. Based on existing intercultural communication literature, English authors tend to deductively give their main points at the beginning, following with detailed explanations or arguments afterwards while the Chinese authors tend to place their main points inductively towards the end. In this study, this hypothesis has been verified by the authors’ Chinese-to-English translation experiences in the fields of science and engineering (e.g. journal papers, conference papers and monographs). The basic methodology used is the comparison of writings by Chinese authors with writings of the same or similar topic written by English authors in terms of organization structures. Translators should be aware of this nuance, so that instead of limiting themselves to translating the contents of an article in its original structure, they can convert the structures to fill the cross-culture gap. This approach can be controversial because if a translator changes the structure organization of a paragraph (e.g. from a 'because-therefore' inductive structure by a Chinese author to a deductive structure in English), this change of sentence order could be questioned by the original authors. For this reason, translators need to properly inform the original authors on the intercultural differences of English and Chinese writing (e.g. inductive structure versus deductive structure), and work with the original authors to maintain accuracy while converting from one structure used in a source language to another structure in the target language. The authors have incorporated these methodologies into their translation practices and work closely with the authors on the inter-cultural organization structure mapping. Translating discourse organization structure should become a standard practice in the translation process. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=discourse%20structure" title="discourse structure">discourse structure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20structure" title=" information structure"> information structure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intercultural%20communication" title=" intercultural communication"> intercultural communication</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=translation%20practice" title=" translation practice"> translation practice</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65483/translating-discourse-organization-structures-used-in-chinese-and-english-scientific-and-engineering-writings" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65483.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">440</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26420</span> Digital Development of Cultural Heritage: Construction of Traditional Chinese Pattern Database</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shaojian%20Li">Shaojian Li</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The traditional Chinese patterns, as an integral part of Chinese culture, possess unique values in history, culture, and art. This lack of knowledge could potentially have implications for the reputation of some UK institutions and also the attractiveness of the UK higher education sector to future international students. This longitudinal study explored the academic and social experiences of twelve Chinese top-up students in a UK institution in-depth and revealed that the students felt their experiences were influenced significantly by their surrounding contexts at the macro and meso levels, which, however, have been largely overlooked in existing research. This article suggests the importance of improving the communications between the partner institutions in China and the UK, and also providing sufficient pre-departure and after arrival support to Chinese top-up students at the institutional level. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=articulation%20agreements" title="articulation agreements">articulation agreements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20top-up%20students" title=" Chinese top-up students"> Chinese top-up students</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=top-up%20programmes" title=" top-up programmes"> top-up programmes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=U-curve" title=" U-curve"> U-curve</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133738/perceptions-of-chinese-top-up-students-transitioning-through-a-regional-uk-university-a-longitudinal-study-using-the-u-curve-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133738.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">170</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26418</span> Your Third Step to Understanding Research Ethics: Survey-Based Perspective</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sadeq%20Al%20Yaari">Sadeq Al Yaari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ayman%20Al%20Yaari"> Ayman Al Yaari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adham%20Al%20Yaari"> Adham Al Yaari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Montaha%20Al%20Yaari"> Montaha Al Yaari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aayah%20Al%20Yaari"> Aayah Al Yaari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sajedah%20Al%20Yaari"> Sajedah Al Yaari</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Objective: This research summarizes the third volume of the book entitled: “Research Ethics”. Also, sometimes the inappropriateness of medical terminology leads to panic when women face the symptoms associated with menopause. On top of that, when women avoid discussing menopause as a topic, others are less likely to pay attention to the needs of menopausal women as their bodies change. This research will compare the experience of Chinese menopausal women and diasporic Chinese women's perceptions of menopause. A qualitative study will be conducted by collecting and analyzing experiences and perceptions to compare differences in women's perceptions of menopause, considering cultural and social factors. In addition, the study will gather information on the differences in the conceptualization of menopause between the Chinese and Canadian medical fields. Co-design sessions will be held to establish how to bring menopause to the attention of people other than women. Furthermore, a support network for menopause women will be created through these co-design sessions. It is hoped that this research will contribute to a proper understanding of menopause and provide support for Chinese women. This research is built upon feminist standpoint theory and inclusive design theory. Except for the male and female, women with PhD degrees are stigmatized as the ‘third gender’ in Chinese society. People, especially most men, believe that female PhD students challenge the traditional image and gender role of Chinese women. This gender stereotype causes a range of difficulties in finding partners in marriage market for Chinese female PhD students. In this study, the author conducted in-depth interviews with 15 participants who are currently doing their PhD studies in Chinese universities to explore their perceptions of being leftover women on the basis of their experience. All the participants are single. Based on the analysis of qualitative data, this study found that the ‘leftover women’ phenomenon among Chinese female PhD students is the result of the contradictions generated between Chinese patriarchal society and them. Although Chinese female PhD students is an attention-attracting group, the studies about them are very limited in China. This study could not only contribute to the understanding of the ‘third gender’ phenomenon and the ‘leftover women’ studies in China, but also, in practical level, could give some guidance for governments to resolve the social problems of female PhD students. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20female%20Ph.D.%20students" title="Chinese female Ph.D. students">Chinese female Ph.D. students</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20%E2%80%98leftover%20women%E2%80%99" title=" the ‘leftover women’"> the ‘leftover women’</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20Chinese%20patriarchal%20society" title=" the Chinese patriarchal society"> the Chinese patriarchal society</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gender%20role" title=" gender role"> gender role</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20culture" title=" Chinese culture"> Chinese culture</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98311/understanding-the-third-gender-a-qualitative-study-of-the-perception-of-being-a-leftover-woman-among-chinese-female-phd-students" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98311.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">223</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26415</span> Empirical Research on Preference for Conflict Resolution Styles of Owners and Contractors in China</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Junqi%20Zhao">Junqi Zhao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yongqiang%20Chen"> Yongqiang Chen</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The preference for different conflict resolution styles are influenced by cultural background and power distance of two parties involving in conflict. This research put forward 7 hypotheses and tested the preference differences of the five conflict resolution styles between Chinese owner and contractor as well as the preference differences concerning the same style between two parties. The research sample includes 202 practitioners from construction enterprises in mainland China. Research result found that theories concerning conflict resolution styles could be applied in the Chinese construction industry. Some results of this research were not in line with former research, and this research also gave explanation to the differences from the characteristics of construction projects. Based on the findings, certain suggestions were made to serve as a guidance for managers to choose appropriate conflict resolution styles for a better handling of conflict. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chinese%20owner%20and%20contractor" title="Chinese owner and contractor">Chinese owner and contractor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conflict" title=" conflict"> conflict</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=construction%20project" title=" construction project"> construction project</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conflict%20resolution%20styles" title=" conflict resolution styles"> conflict resolution styles</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3663/empirical-research-on-preference-for-conflict-resolution-styles-of-owners-and-contractors-in-china" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3663.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">531</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26414</span> Exploring a Teaching Model in Cultural Education Using Video-Focused Social Networking Apps: An Example of Chinese Language Teaching for African Students</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zhao%20Hong">Zhao Hong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> When international students study Chinese as a foreign or second language, it is important for them to form constructive viewpoints and possess an open mindset on Chinese culture. This helps them to make faster progress in their language acquisition. Observations from African students at Liaoning Institute of Science and Technology show that by integrating video-focused social networking apps such as Tiktok (“Douyin”) on a controlled basis, students raise their interest not only in making an effort in learning the Chinese language, but also in the understanding of the Chinese culture. During the last twelve months, our research group explored a teaching model using selected contents in certain classroom settings, including virtual classrooms during lockdown periods due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Using interviews, a survey was conducted on international students from African countries at the Liaoning Institute of Science and Technology in Chinese language courses. Based on the results, a teaching model was built for Chinese language acquisition by entering the "mobile Chinese culture". <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
