And He answered and said, "It is as you say." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find nothing blameworthy in this man." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But they were insistent, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all of Judea, beginning from Galilee even to here."</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And when he heard Galilee named, Pilate asked whether the Man were a Galilean;</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And after determining that He was from Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, since he also was in Jerusalem in those days.</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And when Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly; for he had long been desiring to see Him because he had heard many things about Him, and he was hoping to see a miracle done by Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he questioned Him with many words; but He answered him nothing. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>All the while, the chief priests and the scribes stood vehemently accusing Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Herod and his soldiers treated Him with contempt; and after mocking Him, he put a splendid robe on Him and sent Him back to Pilate. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And on that same day, Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, because before there was enmity between them.</p> <a name="13" id="13"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And when Pilate had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>He said to them, "You brought this Man to me as one who was turning away the people; and behold, I have examined Him in your presence and have found nothing blameworthy in this Man concerning the accusation which you bring against Him; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Nor even has Herod; for I sent you to him, and observe, nothing worthy of death was done by Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Therefore, after I chastise Him, I will release Him." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now of necessity, he had to release one to them at the feast.</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But they all cried out at once, saying, "Away with this Man, and release Barabbas to us." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>He was the one who had been cast into prison on account of making a certain insurrection in the city and committing murder. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Therefore, Pilate again called to them, wishing to release Jesus. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But they kept crying out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And a third time he said to them, "But what evil did this Man commit? I have not found any cause worthy of death in Him. Therefore, after chastising Him, I will release Him." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But they were urgent with loud voices, asking for Him to be crucified. And their voices, and those of the chief priests, prevailed. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Pilate decreed that their request be granted. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And he released to them the one whom they had asked for, who on account of insurrection and murder had been cast into prison, but he delivered Jesus up to their will.</p> <a name="26" id="26"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And as they led Him away, they laid hold on a certain Cyrenian named Simon, who was coming from a field; and they put the cross on him, that he might carry it behind Jesus.</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And following Him was a great multitude of people with many women, who also were bewailing and lamenting Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For behold, the days are coming in which they shall say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that did not bear, and the breasts that did not give suck. ' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us. ' <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>For if they do these things in the green tree, what shall take place in the dry?"</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And two other malefactors were also led away with Him to be put to death.</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And when they came to the place called Place of a Skull, there they crucified Him and the malefactors, one on the right and one on the left. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And as they divided His garments, they cast lots. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Now the people stood by observing, and the rulers among them were also deriding Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself, if this is the Christ, the chosen of God." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And the soldiers also mocked Him, coming near and offering Him vinegar, <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And saying, "If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And there also was an inscription over Him written in Greek and Latin and Hebrew: "This is the King of the Jews."</p> <p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Then one of the malefactors who was hanging there railed at Him, saying, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But the other one answered and rebuked him, saying, "Do not even you fear God, you who are under the same condemnation? <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And we indeed justly, for we are receiving due payment for what we did; <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Then he said to Jesus, "Remember me, Lord, when You come into Your kingdom." <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And Jesus said to him, "Truly, I tell you today, you shall be with Me in paradise."</p> <a name="44" id="44"></a><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>Now it was about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was split down the middle. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And after crying out with a loud voice, Jesus said, "Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit."
